NARRATIVE TEXT

Group 1 – “The Legend of Surabaya”
Once upon a time, in a river in East Java, there lived a shark named Sura and a crocodile named
Baya. Both were strong and fierce creatures, and they often fought over prey.

Their battles always ended in a draw, and no one won or lost. Finally, they decided to make
peace. They made an agreement to divide their territory. Sura would rule the water, while Baya
would rule the land. The agreement worked well for many years. Sura and Baya lived side by
side in peace.

However, one day, Sura broke the agreement. He caught a fish in the river, which was Baya’s
territory. Baya was furious. He chased Sura and challenged him to battle again. Sura had no
choice but to fight. Their second battle was even more fierce than the first. They fought for
hours, and both were badly injured.

In the end, Sura managed to defeat Baya. He bit Baya’s neck and killed him.

Baya’s death brought peace to the Surabaya River. Sura became the sole ruler of the river, and he
never broke the agreement again.

From this story, the name Surabaya comes from the words “sura” which means brave and “baya”
which means danger. The name represents the bravery of the people of Surabaya in the face of
danger.

GROUP 2 – “The Legend of Toba Lake”


In the past, there lived a young orphan farm in the northern part of the island of Sumatra.
Syahdan, the young man made his life from farming and fishing.

One day while he was fishing he got a fish which was so beautiful in golden brown. While he
was holding it, the fish turned into a beautiful princess. The princess was a woman who was
condemned for violating the prohibitions and it would turn into a kind of creature who first
touched it. Because at that time the human touched it, then it turned into a princess.

Fascinated by her beauty, the young man asked her to be his wife. The application was accepted
on condition that the young man was not allowed to tell the origin of the princess who came
originally from fish. The young man agreed to this requirement. Having got married for a year,
the couple got a boy but he had a bad habit that he never felt satisfied while he was eating. He ate
all the food.

One day the boy ate all the food that should be given to his father. The young man then so
angrily said: "basically you are the offspring of fish!" That statement by itself unlocked the
secrets of his wife and broke his promise.

Shortly afterwards, his wife and son magically disappeared. Suddenly in the land of their former
footsteps went out the springs which were very heavy. The water flew from these springs
continuously and the longer it happened the larger it would be. Finally, these springs became a
vast lake. The lake is now called Toba Lake.
GROUP 3 – “The Legend of Mount Bromo”
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful young woman named Roro Anteng and a handsome
young man named Joko Seger. They lived in a small village on the slopes of Mount Semeru, the
tallest mountain in East Java, Indonesia.

Roro Anteng and Joko Seger were deeply in love and wanted to get married. But, their parents,
the king and queen of the village, forbade them to marry. They said that Roro Anteng was too
beautiful and that Joko Seger was not good enough for her.

Roro Anteng and Joko Seger were heartbroken. They prayed to the gods for help. The gods heard
their prayers and sent them a message. The gods said that Roro Anteng and Joko Seger could
marry, but only if they had 100 children.

Roro Anteng and Joko Seger were overjoyed. They began to have children, one after another.
They had 99 children, and they were all healthy and happy.

However, when Roro Anteng was pregnant with her 100th child, she became very ill. She knew
that she would not survive the birth.Roro Anteng called Joko Seger to her side. She told him that
she was going to die, and she asked him to do something special for her.

She asked him to throw their 100th child into the crater of Mount Semeru. Joko Seger was
heartbroken, but he knew that he had to do what his wife asked. He threw their 100th child, a boy
named Kusuma, into the crater of Mount Semeru.

As soon as Kusuma hit the ground, a miracle happened. The crater of Mount Semeru began to
fill with water. The water rose higher and higher, until it formed a lake. The lake was named
Ranu Kumbolo, which means “Lake of Kusuma.” It is said that Kusuma still lives in the lake,
and that he protects the people of the village.

GROUP 4 – “Roro Jonggrang”

Once upon a time, in Prambanan village, there was a kingdom led by Prabu Baka. He had a very
beautiful daughter named Roro Jonggrang.

Once upon a time, Prambanan was defeated by the Pengging Kingdom led by Bandung
Bondowoso. Prabu Baka died on the battlefield, killed by the powerful Bandung Bondowoso.

Bandung Bondowoso then occupied Prambanan Palace. Seeing the beautiful daughter of Prabu
Bak, his desire to marry Roro Jonggrang arose. Roro Jonggrang knew that Bandung Bondowoso
was the one who killed her father. Therefore, she looked for a way to reject him and asked for
1.000 temples and two deep wells to be made. Everything had to be done in one night.

Bandung Bondowoso agreed to Roro Jonggrang’s terms. He mobilized an army of spirits to help
him on the appointed day : By four in the morning, only five temple remained unfinished and the
two wells were almost finished.
Knowing that 1.000 temples were nearing completion, Roro Jonggrang went to wake the girls of
Prambanan village and ordered them to light torches and burn straw. The atmosphere at that time
became bright.

The rooster crowed. Hearing that sound, the spirits immediately left work. At that time there was
only one temple left to be made. Knowing that it was Roro Jonggrang, Bandung Bondowoso
cursed her to became a statue to complete the unfinished temple.

GROUP 5 – “Ande-ande Lumut”

Once upon a time, in a kingdom named Jenggala, there lived a prince named Panji
Asmarabangun. Panji Asmarabangun was a handsome and kind prince.

He was engaged to a princess named Dewi Sekartaji from the kingdom of Kediri.

One day, the kingdom of Jenggala was attacked by enemies. Panji Asmarabangun went to war to
defend his kingdom. Dewi Sekartaji, who was afraid, fled to the village. In the village, Dewi
Sekartaji disguised herself as a girl named Kleting Kuning. She worked as a servant in the house
of a widow.

Meanwhile, Panji Asmarabangun, who had successfully defeated the enemies, returned to the
kingdom. He also searched for Dewi Sekartaji, but could not find her. Panji Asmarabangun then
disguised himself as a young man named Ande Ande Lumut. He announced that he would marry
the girl who could solve his riddle.

Kleting Kuning, who heard the announcement, was interested in following it. She successfully
solved Panji Asmarabangun’s riddle, and they were married.

After their marriage, Panji Asmarabangun also revealed his disguise. Dewi Sekartaji was very
happy because she finally got to meet Panji Asmarabangun again. They lived happily ever after.

GROUP 6 - “The Legend of Banyuwangi”

Once upon a time, there was a King named Sulahkromo. The king was helped by a Prime
Minister named Raden Sidopekso. The Prime Minister had a wife named Sri Tanjung. She was
so beautiful that the king really wanted to marry his wife.

One day, the King assigned his Prime Minister to a long mission. While the Prime Minister was
away from his wife, the King tried to get Sri Tanjung. However he failed and he was very angry.
Thus, when Sidopekso went back, the King told him that his wife was such an unfaithful wife.
Soon the Prime Minister was very angry with his wife. Sri Tanjung said that it was untrue but
Sidopekso didn't believe her and said that he would kill her. Then he brought his wife to the river
bank. Before he killed her and threw her into the river, his wife had said that her innocence
would be proven After Sidopekso killed her. After that, he threw her dead body into the dirty
river.
The shocking fact happened not long after that when the river immediately became clean and
began to spread a wonderful fragrance around. Sidopekso said, "Banyu...Wangi...or
Banyuwangi". This means "fragrant water". Banyuwangi was born from the proof of noble and
sacred love.

GROUP 7- “Timun Mas”


Long ago, there lived a husband and wife farmer. They really want to have children, but never
get one.

One day, a giant gave them magic cucumber seeds. If planted, the seed will produce a beautiful
baby girl. After the baby girl was born, they gave her the name Timun Mas. Timun Mas grew
into a beautiful girl. However, on his 17th birthday, a giant came to fulfill his promise.

Timun Mas’ father gave Timun Mas a cloth bag filled with salt, chilies, cucumber seeds and
shrimp paste. Timun Mas ran to save himself from the giant. The giant chased Timun Mas.
Timun Mas uses magical objects in her cloth bag to fight the giant.

He sprinkles salt to make an ocean, throws chilies to make thorns, scatters cucumber seeds to
make a cucumber garden, and throws shrimp paste to make a mud lake.

Finally, the giant drowned in the mud lake. Timun Mas returned home and lived happily with his
parents.
