Daughters of the Holy Prophet

Hazrat Zainab:
She was the eldest daughter of the Holy Prophet and was born in the 5th year of his marriage when he
was 30 years of age. Holy Prophet married him to a man called Abu-al-Aas (the nephew of Hazrat
Khadija) and the couple had two children: Ali and Umaymah. Her son passed away at a young age and
her daughter was deeply loved by Holy Prophet. Her husband did not accept Islam and therefore she
had to stay back with him when the Muslims migrated to Madina. Her husband participated from the
side of the Quraysh in the battle of Badr and was later taken as a captive. Knowing this, she sent her
mother’s necklace as a ransom which when reached Holy Prophet brought tears to his eyes. The Holy
Prophet consulted his companions to return back the necklace in return for him sending his daughter
back. The companions agreed, therefore, he told Abu-al-Aas to allow her daughter to migrate to Madina
alongside her daughter and sent him back with the necklace. Abu-al-aas did as was instructed and sent
Hazrat Zainab to Madina under the protection of his brother Kinana. He came to Madina but was
separated from his wife after the verse “And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they
believe” came. Later he converted to Islam and then the separation ended. Hazrat Zainab passed away
in 8AH after being faced with an illness.

Hazrat Ruqqaya:
She was three years younger than her sister Hazrat Zainab and was born in the 8th year of Prophet’s
marriage. She was married to the son of Abu Lahab, whose name was Utbah, but she was still not living
with him. Owing to Abu Lahab’s misconduct with Muslims, Surah Lahab was revealed which led to the
divorce amongst his son and Hazrat Ruqqaya. She later on married Hazrat Usman and it was with him
that she led the first batch of Migrants to Abyissinia. In Abyssinia they had a son whom they named
Abdullah who died at the age of six in Madina. Later the couple migrated to Madina before the Holy
Prophet migrated. It was in Madina that she got the title of the Lady who did two migrations. In Madina
she caught an illness during the time of Battle of Badr and therefore Hazrat Usman was told by the Holy
Prophet to take care of her rather than participating in the battle. She got really sick and before the
battle ended passed away in 2 AH. She is buried in Jannat ul Baqi.

Hazrat Umm-e-Kulsoom:
Like her sister, Hazrat Ruqqaya she was also married to the son of Abu Lahab, Utaibah, but had not
started living with him. She also got divorced on the revelation of Surah Lahab. She suffered the
persecutions at the hands of the Makkans when she along with her father and mother had to live in
Shibi-e-Abi Talib. Later on she migrated to Madina alongside Hazrat Sawdah and it was in 2 AH that she
married Hazrat Usman after the death of her sister. It was her marriage with Hazrat Usman which
earned him the title of Zun-Nurain (Possessor of two lights) and she lived with him happily. During the
Tabuk Expedition when her husband and father were away she got sick and passed away in 9AH. She
had no children from her marriage.

Hazrat Fatima:
She was the youngest daughter of the Holy Prophet and was born 5 years before the Prophethood. She
was loved by the Holy Prophet dearly and amongst all her sisters resembled him the most as narrated
by Hazrat Aisha. She was someone with great knowledge about the religion as she used to be in the
company of her father. She also used to recite the Quran and had memorized it by heart.
After the passing away of her mother she started taking care of her father and whenever he came back
wounded she would look after his wounds. On one particular occasion when Holy Prophet was praying,
Abu Jahal placed the guts of a dead animal on his back while he was in Sujood. She ran and took them
off while crying. Holy Prophet consoled her by telling her that Allah is there for them. She did not
migrate with the Holy Prophet as migrating with him would have posed a danger for her and him.
Migrating before him would have alerted the Quraysh that something is underway and that is why she
migrated with Hazrat Sauda after Holy Prophet migrated to Madina.
In Madina, there were several men who wanted the hand of Hazrat Fatima but Holy Prophet gave it to
none other than Hazrat Ali. Her marriage set an example for all fathers as to how they should treat their
daughters; Holy Prophet took her permission prior to marrying her with Hazrat Ali. It is reported that
Holy Prophet used to visit her before he left on a journey and after he came back from it. She gave birth
to two sons in the 3rd and 4th AH. The Prophet named them both and dearly loved them.
According to a narration from Hazrat Ali RA, Hazrat Fatimah(RA), who was tired due to daily routine,
intended to ask her father for a servant to perform chores. Her father (Holy Prophet) heard of what she
had to say, and so he went to her house, and sat with her, then said, "May I not direct you to something

better than what you have asked for?" He then taught her the tasbih, and said that it would be better
for them than a servant; hence Hazrat Fatimah was pleased with it.
Holy Prophet called her one day and told her that she would be the highest ranked women in Jannah
after Hazrat Maryam. She was there with his father in his last days and got really sad and started crying
when the Holy Prophet told her of him passing away. But she soon became happy when the Holy
Prophet told her that she would be following him soon. The Holy Prophet called her and her family and
took them under his cloak stating that they will be free of all sins. Muslims all over the world deeply
regard Hazrat Fatima and she is considered as the perfect role model for Muslim women. She is also
known by her title Al-Zahra which means the shining one and some Muslims claim that the word
“Kausar” used in Surah-e-Kausar refers to Hazrat Fatima coming in the life of Prophet. She passed away
in 632 AD, 6 months after the demise of her father.
