Three Phase AC Circuits – Problems

1. A symmetrical three-phase, three-wire 440 V supply is connected to a star-connected


load as shown in Fig. The impedances in each branch are ZR = (2 + j3) Ω, ZY = (1 – j2) Ω
and ZB = (3 + j4) Ω. Find its equivalent delta-connected load. The phase sequence is
RYB.

2. A symmetrical three-phase, three-wire 400 V, supply is connected to a delta-connected load


as shown in Fig. Impedances in each branch are ZRY = 10 ∠30° Ω; ZYB = 10 ∠–45° Ω and ZBR = 2.5
∠60° Ω. Find its equivalent star-connected load; the phase sequence is RYB.

3. Three identical impedances are connected in delta as shown in Fig. Find an equivalent
star network such that the line current is the same when connected to the same supply.

4. A symmetrical star-connected system is shown in Fig. Calculate the three line voltages,
given VRN = 230 ∠0°. The phase sequence is RYB.

5. A balanced star-connected load of (4 + j3) Ω per phase is connected to a balanced 3-


phase 400 V supply. The phase current is 12 A. Find (a) the total active power, (b)
reactive power, and (c) total apparent power.
6. Three identical loads are connected in delta to a three-phase supply of 440 ∠0 V as
shown in Fig. If the phase current IR is 15 ∠0 A, calculate the three line currents.

7. A balanced delta-connected load of (2 + j3) Ω per phase is connected to a balanced


three-phase 440 V supply. The phase current is 10 A. Find the (a) total active power (b)
reactive power, and (c) apparent power in the circuit.
8. A three-phase, balanced delta-connected load of (4 + j8) Ω is connected across a 400
V, 3 – Φ balanced supply. Determine the phase currents and line currents. Assume the
phase sequence to be RYB. Also calculate the power drawn by the load.
9. A balanced star-connected load having an impedance (15 + j20) Ω per phase is
connected to a three-phase, 440 V; 50 Hz supply. Find the line currents and the power
absorbed by the load. Assume RYB phase sequence.
If in case a Neutral is connected, find the neutral current.
10. For the circuit shown below, calculate the line current, power and power factor. The
value of R, L and C in each phase are 10 Ω, 1 H and 100 µF respectively.

11. An unbalanced four-wire, star-connected load has a balanced voltage of 400 V, the
loads are Z1 = (4 + j8) Ω; Z2 = (3 + j4) Ω; Z3 = (15 + j20) Ω. Calculate the (a) line currents,
(b) current in the neutral wire, and (c) the total power.

12. A 400 V, 50 Hz, 3 Phase supply of phase sequence ABC is supplied to a delta connected
load consisting of 100 Ω resistance between lines A and B, 318 mH inductance
between lines B and C and 31.8 µF capacitance between lines C and A. Determine
phase and line currents.
13. Three impedances Z1 = 20 ∠30° Ω, Z2 = 40 ∠60° Ω and Z3 = 10 ∠–90° Ω are delta-
connected to a 400 V, 3 – phase system. Determine the (a) phase currents, (b) line
currents, and (c) total power consumed by the load.
14. For the unbalanced circuit given below, determine the line currents and voltage across
each load impedance. Draw the phasor diagram.

15. Obtain the readings of two Wattmeters connected to a three-phase three-wire 120 V
system feeding a balanced ∆ connected load with a load impedance of 12∠30° Ω.
Assume either phase sequence. Find the phase power and compare the total power to
the sum of the Wattmeter readings.
16. The Two-Wattmeter method is used to measure power in a three-phase load. The
Wattmeter readings are 400 W and -35 W. Calculate (a) total active power (b) power
factor and (c) reactive power.
17. The input power to a three-phase load is 10 kW at 0.8 pf. Two Wattmeters are
connected to measure the power, find the individual readings of the Wattmeters.
18. The input power to a three-phase motor was measured by two wattmeter method. The
readings are 5.2 kW and 1.7 kW. The later readings have been obtained after reversing
the current coil connections. The line voltage was 400 V. Calculate a) total power b)
power factor and c) line current.
