Практическое занятие № 14
Тема: Прибытие в порт, прохождение паспортного и таможенного контроля. Past Continuous
(функции, слова-признаки).
Цель: формирование навыков корректного выбора ситуаций, где уместно использование
прошедшего длительного времени, с опорой на присущие ему слова-признаки, усвоение
речевых клише, необходимых для прохождения паспортного и таможенного контроля,
развитие навыков составления диалогов по образцу.

The Past Continuous Tense

Таблица № 13. Функции и слова-признаки прошедшего длительного времени
Слова-признаки Назначение прошедшего длительного времени
still  (всё) ещё Обозначает действие, которое происходило в течение
at 5 o’clock yesterday – вчера в определенного момента времени в прошлом и
5 часов сопровождается точными показателями совершения
at that time  в то самое время действия (см. слова-признаки слева).
all day yesterday – весь 1) Точный момент времени в прошлом – at 10 o'clock

just – как раз (в тот самый
момент) 3) Другое действие в прошлом, выраженное простым
для негативного прошедшим (V2/ Ved), с союзами when, as, just as:
отношения: We were having supper, when the phone rang.
always  всегда As/ Just as I was leaving, the phone rang.
(too) often – часто 4) Другое действие в прошедшем длительном (was/were
constantly  постоянно + Ving) в придаточном с союзом while, происходящее
forever  вечно одновременно:
continually  постоянно While Sue and I were painting, John was playing the guitar.
5) С наречиями constantly, always, для передачи
отрицательных эмоций (ср. с настоящим длительным
временем):
When I worked here, I was always making mistakes.
6) В косвенной речи, где говорится о действии,
совершавшемся в тот самый момент, когда о нем
упоминали, либо о твердо запланированных на будущее
действиях (если слова автора выражены прошедшим
временем, например, said -сказал)
 They said they were leaving for Paris the next day.

Ex. 14.1. Put the verbs in brackets into the Past Continuous Tense, explain the situation of
its usage, underline its indicators.

day yesterday but they were not able to come. 4. The burglar (to open) the safe when he heard

(to lie) in the beach. 6. He said that he (to fly) to New York the next day. 7. I did not recognize her

cheque when I remembered that I had nothing in the bank. 10. Why did you give him that book? I
still (to read) it. 11. He grumbled that she always (to telephone) instead of helping him. 12. It (to
snow) heavily during the whole week. 13. While the guests (to dance) thieves broke into the house
and stole a lot of fur coats. 14. He said that he (to build) himself a new cottage. 15. At that time she
(to make) her speech at the meeting. 16. What you (to do) at 10 yesterday evening? – I (to sleep).

- Are you travelling alone?

- Yes. They are waiting outside.

- No. They are just my friends.
- How long will you be staying in the UK?
- For two weeks.
- Where will you be staying? Do you have any hotel reservations?
- I’m going to stay at my friend’s place. He lives in an apartment. This is his address in Brighton.

- No. Just tourism, sightseeing and visiting my friends.
- Do you have a return ticket?
- Yes. It’s for August 15th.
- May I see it?
- Sure. Here it is.
- Thank you. What’s your job?
- I’m a wholesale trader at a building materials warehouse.
- How much money are you bringing?
- I have 3000$ in cash and my credit cards as well. I’m going to cover all my expenses in the
country.
- Do you have your recent bank statement with you? May I see it?
- OK. Here you are, sir.
- Have you visited the United Kingdom before?
- No. this is the first time I’ve arrived here.
