Timing chain: removal/installation


General
Timing chain layout

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Remove the air filter housing


Disconnect the EGR tube from the EGR valve
Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Disconnect the brake servo hose


Disconnect the purge control vacuum hose

Remove the inlet manifold brackets

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body
Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose
Disconnect the MAP sensor connector
Disconnect the throttle position sensor connector
Timing chain: removal/installation
Generalthe upper inlet manifold
Remove
Timing chain
Disconnect thelayout
ignition coil wiring (6x)
Remove all the wiring from the cylinder head
Remove the ignition coil capacitors

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Remove the ignition coils


Disconnect the crankcase breather hose from the valve cover
Remove the cylinder head covers
Remove the right front wheel
Remove the right front splash guard
Timing chain: removal/installation
Generalthe ancillary drive belt
Remove
Timing chain
Remove the crankshaft
layout pulley
Use the special tools to remove the crankshaft pulley (8194, 8454 )

Remove the coolant expansion tank and place it aside


Removal
Remove the ancillary drive belt tensioner

Disconnect the heater earth from

Disconnect
Note: Put athe inlet air

Remove the timing chain cover


Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Discard the gasket


Remove the crankshaft oil seal and discard
Turn the crankshaft to 60° ATDC for cylinder 1
Align the timing marks

Remove the power steering pump bracket


Remove the power steering pump but do not disconnect the lines
Right-hand side
Removal
Remove the chain tensioner cover
Disconnect
Remove thethe battery
chain earth cable
tensioner
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Left-hand side
Disconnect the camshaft position sensor electrical connector

Remove
Timing chain
Remove the camshaft
layout gearwheels
Note: Remove the right-hand camshaft gearwheel first
Remove the chain guide rail
Remove the chain tensioner guide
Remove the timing chain

Removal
Disconnect
Check the timing
the battery
marksearth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Remove the secondary chain tensioner mounting bolts


Remove the camshaft bearing caps
In the order shown (10 - 1 )

Remove the camshafts together with the timing chain


Remove the secondary chain tensioner
Remove the secondary timing chains

Installation
Fit the timing chain onto the camshaft gearwheels
Removal
Align the timing marks on the second timing chain
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Refit the secondary timing chain tensioner (12 Nm)


Fit the timing chain and gearwheels together
Fit the camshafts
If necessary:
Compress the tensioner
Lock the tensioner; use a locking pin

Ensure that the rockers are fitted correctly


Refit the camshaft bearing caps (12 Nm)
Tighten the camshaft bearing caps (1 - 10 )

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Remove the tensioner locking pin


Refit the camshaft gearwheels
Refit the inner chain guide (28 Nm)
Fit the timing chain onto the crankshaft gearwheel
Align the crankshaft timing marks

Timing chain layout

Fit the timing chain onto the left-hand side camshaft gearwheel
Align the timing marks
Ensure the timing mark is located in between the two plated timing chain links

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Fit the timing chain onto the coolant pump gearwheel


Fit the timing chain onto the right-hand side camshaft gearwheel
Align the timing marks
Timing chain: removal/installation
General
Ensure the timing mark is aligned with the plated timing chain link

Refit the outer chain guide


Removal (28 Nm)
Refit the chain
Disconnect the tensioner guide(s)
battery earth cable (28 Nm)
Refit
Drainthe
theaccess
coolingplugs
system (20 Nm)
Drain the oilthe
Disconnect from the
inlet airchain tensionersensor
temperature
Use the special
Disconnect the tool (8186)
inlet hose from the throttle body
Slowly press the tensioner to drain the oil

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Reset the tensioner
Disconnect
Turn the inlet
the special toolhose
overfrom the throttle body
(8186)
Check the O-ring (A)
Check the snap ring (B)
Renew if necessary
Slowly compress the tensioner
Check the position

Fit the chain tensioner (12 Nm )


Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Turn the camshaft until the bolt holes in the hub align with the holes in the camshaft gearwheel
Refit the camshaft gearwheel bolt(s) (28 Nm)
Pre-tension the timing chain
Unlock the tensioner

Refit the power steering pump (30 Nm)


Fit the power steering pump bracket (30 Nm )

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Reconnect the camshaft position sensor electrical connector


Refit the timing chain cover (M6: 12 Nm, M10: 54 Nm)
Clean off the sealing surfaces
Apply sealant as indicated

Renew the crankshaft oil seal in the engine front cover


Use the special tools (6780-1, 6780-2, 8179)

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Refit the right-hand engine support (61 Nm)

Refit the heater hoses


Removal
Refit the ancillary drive belt tensioner (34 Nm)
Disconnect
Refit the battery
the crankshaft earth (170

Drainthe
Use thespecial
cooling system
tools to refit the crankshaft pulley (8179, 6792, 6792-1)
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body
Timing chain: removal/installation

Refit the ancillary drive belt
Timing
Refit thechain
frontlayout
splash guard
Refit the front right wheel
Refit the cylinder head covers (12 Nm)
Reconnect the positive crankcase breather hoses to the valve cover
Refit and connect the ignition coils
Refit the ignition coil capacitors
Tighten the bolt (28 Nm )

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body
Tighten the bolt (10 Nm )

Refit the wiring loom to the cylinder head

Refit the upper inlet manifold (12 Nm)
Timing chain
Reconnect thelayout
throttle position sensor connector
Reconnect the MAP sensor connector
Reconnect the positive crankcase ventilation hose

Refit the inlet manifold brackets

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Reconnect the purge control vacuum hose


Reconnect the brake servo vacuum hose

Reconnect the EGR tube to the EGR valve

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body

Refit the air filter housing


Reconnect the inlet hose to the throttle body

Reconnect the inlet air temperature sensor plug


Refill the cooling system
Removal
Reconnect the battery earth cable
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Torque settings
Drain the cooling system
Secondary chain tensioner: (12 Nm)
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Chain guide rails: (28 Nm)
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body
Access plug: (20 Nm)
Primary chain tensioner (12 Nm)
Timing chain cover: (M6: 12 Nm, M10: 54 Nm)
Engine support to body: (61 Nm)
Engine support to engine bracket: (61 Nm)
Ancillary drive belt tensioner: (34 Nm)
Wheel nuts
Camshaft bearing cap
Power steering pump
Crankshaft pulley
Timing chain: removal/installation

Removal
Disconnect the battery earth cable
Drain the cooling system
Disconnect the inlet air temperature sensor
Disconnect the inlet hose from the throttle body
