SET ROUTER CONFIGURATION

I. Learning Competency:
MELCs:
➢ set router/Wi-fi/wireless access point/repeater configuration in accordance with
manufacturer’s instructions, network design, and end-user preferences.
o Specific Objectives
1. Identify concepts related to router and router configuration.
2. Identify and explain the functions of the parts of a router.

II. Background Information for Learners

On this lesson, you will continue to acquire more knowledge as well as skill about networking as you
will now focus on a specific network device that is closely working with IP addresses – the router. As a
network technician, you will be expected to configure networks. To be able to this, you should understand
one of the most important devices inside a network.

Lesson 1: Router Configuration

What is a router?

A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks or subnetworks. It serves two
primary functions: managing traffic between these networks by forwarding data packets to their intended IP
addresses, and allowing multiple devices to use the same Internet connection.

*A network switch forwards data packets between groups of devices in the same network, whereas a router
forwards data between different networks.

There are several types of routers, but most routers pass data between LANs (local area
networks) and WANs (wide area networks). A LAN is a group of connected devices restricted to a specific
geographic area. A LAN usually requires a single router.

A WAN, by contrast, is a large network spread out over a vast geographic area. Large organizations and
companies that operate in multiple locations across the country, for instance, will need separate LANs for
each location, which then connect to the other LANs to form a WAN. Because a WAN is distributed over a
large area, it often necessitates multiple routers and switches*.
Typical Parts of Wireless Routers

Front

1. Power
Steady green light indicates the unit is powered on. This remains dark when power is off. A red colored
Power LED indicates system failure.

2. LAN
A solid green light indicates a valid link on startup. This light will blink when there is activity currently
passing through the Ethernet port.

3. WLAN
Steady green light indicates a wireless connection. A blinking green light indicates activity on the Wireless
LAN interface.

4. WAN
Steady green light indicates WAN Port is connected to Ethernet Port. Blinking means data is being
transmitted to the WAN Port.

5. Signal Strength Indicator

Green light indicates signal reception is available, the more bars means better reception.

6. Antenna
Provide the interface from the transceiver electronics inside the router to the wireless signals for the
connection to WiFi devices.
7. WAN Port
Connect to optical modems, broadband modems, etc.

8. Ethernet Ports
Use the Ethernet ports to connect the Router to a computer or an Ethernet LAN.

9. Reset Button
To manually reset, depress the button with the power on.

10. Power Button

Press once to power on the device, or press and hold to power it off.

11. Power port

Use the adapter shipped with the Router to connect to the power source.

Router Configuration

A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers
perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet.

The router is usually the default gateway in a computer network

because it uses the internet protocol suite that serves as the
forwarding host to other networks when no other route
specification matches the destination IP address of a packet.

Router configuration includes processes such as specifying

the correct IP addresses a, changing wi-fi name, route Router
settings, etc. https://www.linksys.com/us/p/P-E5350/

Accessing a router’s homepage

All routers have a built-in web-based setup page that allows you to customize settings and set up
advanced properties. In this activity, we will be using a Tenda router.

Note: Before you access the web-based setup page of the router, make sure the router is powered
on and the computer is wired to one of the Ethernet ports on the router, for example, 1, 2, 3 or 4.

1. Connect the router to the RJ-45 Ethernet port on your PC - use one of the yellow LAN ports.
Routers usually comes with ready to use UTP cables.

(IP address may not be the same with other routers, always check the label on the device) and
press Enter on your keyboard. This will take you to the router login page.

Note: Other ways of getting the IP address of the router

• use of the ipconfig command on the command prompt. From the result IP addresses, the router’s
IP address is the default gateway.

• Another way is through the user manual of the router if available

• From the manufacturer’s web site

4. Enter admin as the default password, and click OK.

Changing Wi-Fi Name and Wi-Fi Password of a Router

The cause of the change WIFI name and wireless password is to protect the wireless network. This
activity will guide you how to change the Wi-Fi name and wireless password. In this activity, we will be
using a Tenda router.

Part 1: Login to the homepage of the router

Part 2: Change the SSID and wireless password
Part 3: Reboot the router
1. Open a browser then type 192.168.0.1 in the Address bar, click on Enter.
