Router Configuration
What is a router?
A router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks or subnetworks. It serves two
primary functions: managing traffic between these networks by forwarding data packets to their intended IP
addresses, and allowing multiple devices to use the same Internet connection.
*A network switch forwards data packets between groups of devices in the same network, whereas a router
forwards data between different networks.
There are several types of routers, but most routers pass data between LANs (local area
networks) and WANs (wide area networks). A LAN is a group of connected devices restricted to a specific
geographic area. A LAN usually requires a single router.
A WAN, by contrast, is a large network spread out over a vast geographic area. Large organizations and
companies that operate in multiple locations across the country, for instance, will need separate LANs for
each location, which then connect to the other LANs to form a WAN. Because a WAN is distributed over a
large area, it often necessitates multiple routers and switches*.
Typical Parts of Wireless Routers
Front
1. Power
Steady green light indicates the unit is powered on. This remains dark when power is off. A red colored
Power LED indicates system failure.
2. LAN
A solid green light indicates a valid link on startup. This light will blink when there is activity currently
passing through the Ethernet port.
3. WLAN
Steady green light indicates a wireless connection. A blinking green light indicates activity on the Wireless
LAN interface.
4. WAN
Steady green light indicates WAN Port is connected to Ethernet Port. Blinking means data is being
transmitted to the WAN Port.
Back
6. Antenna
Provide the interface from the transceiver electronics inside the router to the wireless signals for the
connection to WiFi devices.
7. WAN Port
Connect to optical modems, broadband modems, etc.
8. Ethernet Ports
Use the Ethernet ports to connect the Router to a computer or an Ethernet LAN.
9. Reset Button
To manually reset, depress the button with the power on.
Router Configuration
A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks. Routers
perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet.
All routers have a built-in web-based setup page that allows you to customize settings and set up
advanced properties. In this activity, we will be using a Tenda router.
Note: Before you access the web-based setup page of the router, make sure the router is powered
on and the computer is wired to one of the Ethernet ports on the router, for example, 1, 2, 3 or 4.
1. Connect the router to the RJ-45 Ethernet port on your PC - use one of the yellow LAN ports.
Routers usually comes with ready to use UTP cables.

3. Click on the top left navigation bar, and type the router’s IP address, example is 192.168.0.1
(IP address may not be the same with other routers, always check the label on the device) and
press Enter on your keyboard. This will take you to the router login page.
5. Choose your Internet Connection type (given by your Internet Service Provider), and
enter 12345678 for the default network key (or your own network key if you have set one
previously).
6. You are now able to access any settings assigned to the router! Once inside the home page of
the router, you can now configure settings as you want.
The cause of the change WIFI name and wireless password is to protect the wireless network. This
activity will guide you how to change the Wi-Fi name and wireless password. In this activity, we will be
using a Tenda router.
2. Type the Password as admin in the bars to login the setting page.
3. Click on Advanced on the home page to login the advanced setting page
.
4. Click on Wireless, then click on Wireless Basic Settings and making sure that wireless is
Enable. Making sure the SSID Broadcast was checked, otherwise the wireless signal will not
be found in your wireless bar of your computer. Also you can change the Primary SSID as you
want.

5. Click on Wireless, then click on Wireless Security and choose the Security mode as WPA-
PSK, and then open the drop down menu of the WPA Algorithms option then select the type
as AES and set a Security Key as you want. At last, let the other options as defaulted and hit on
the Save button to save the settings.
To be able to access the router’s homepage, users are given default username and passwords which
were usually labeled on the device itself. However, after configuring the router, it is also important to change
the admin’s default password to make sure that no one will change the configurations you made. In
this activity, we will be using a Tenda router.
1. Open a web browser, type the router’s IP address, example- 192.168.0.1 in the address bar, and
then press Enter.
2. Enter the current password for the router (the default password is admin) and then click OK.
6. Enter the current password in the Old Password box, then enter the new password into both the New
Password and Confirm New Password boxes. Finally, click OK.
7. Click OK on the popup message, confirming the password change. The administrator password
for the router has been successfully changed. Password are recommended to be in alpha numeric
format so that it is not easily guessed by hackers.
8. You will be automatically logged out from the router’s settings. Login using the new credentials.

Activity 2. Direction: Complete the diagrams below for each of the following of the given configuration on a
router. One point for every correct procedure that is placed in correct order.
POINTS TO REMEMBER:
• Network configuration is the process of setting a network's controls, flow and operation to
support the network communication of an organization and/or network owner.
• A router is a networking device that forwards data packets between computer networks.
Routers perform the traffic directing functions on the Internet.
• The router is usually the default gateway in a computer network because it uses the internet
protocol suite that serves as the forwarding host to other networks when no other route
specification matches the destination IP address of a packet.
