1. Research Topic: I will be focusing on the accessibility of voting sites for people living with a
physical disability, specifically wheelchair users. I chose this topic for two reasons. Firstly, I work
with people who use wheelchairs and I see every day how they struggle to be a part of our
community due to structural and attitudinal barriers. Second, in the spring, we will be rolling
out a “Get out the Vote” campaign to educate and encourage people with disabilities to know
their rights around voting.
In the United States, almost 7 million people use some type of mobility device, including 2
million using a wheelchair or scooter. This group relies on government programs to help offset
the cost of their disability to help them live independent lives. Having a voice at the table is
crucial so necessary programs do not get cut.
The idea is to look at the polling sites, bus stops and both disable housing and long-term care
facilities in Long Branch. People with a wheelchair generally use Access Link for their
transportation. Access Link will pick an individual up at their door but drop them off at the
nearest bus stop to their destination. This map will show how accessible polling sites are from
the bus stops.
b. Polling Sites: Hosted feature layer and created a MS-Excel CSV file.
This is relevant to the project to see where the sites are located.
