The Mission
The Mission of the Governors Office of Volunteerism is to support the growth and development of volunteerism throughout the state through the promotion, coordination and enhancement of civic engagement. The office occupies a particularly important role in state government, serving as a statewide liaison among public, private, local, state and national volunteer programs.

The Vision
Today, the Governors Office of Volunteerism continues to fulfill its critical mission. Advocacy, recognition, communication and technical assistance form the backbone of the office. Under the leadership of Lt. Governor/Secretary of State Kim Guadagno, a renewed commitment to civic engagement, volunteerism and community service is guiding the office towards the attainment of its goals.

NJ Commission on National and Community Service

The mission of the Commission is to develop a statewide ethos of community service and a comprehensive, coordinated program targeted to the needs of New Jersey and its unique community challenges. The programs shall provide opportunities for service that bring diverse people together working in a common cause to get things done in communities, remove barriers, and promote respect. The Commission shall guide the AmeriCorps programs and work to infuse servicelearning into the primary, secondary, and post-secondary curricula to create future generations of adults committed to community service. National Service programs are funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service.

What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps is the national service program that provides people of all ages and backgrounds with opportunities to serve their communities in exchange for educational awards and a modest living allowance. AmeriCorps members help meet the nations critical needs in the areas of education, human needs, public safety, the environment, and homeland security.

What do AmeriCorps members do?

AmeriCorps members work with communities to find solutions to address local needs. While learning new skills, AmeriCorps members share their talents and energy to make a difference in New Jersey. Corps members might: tutor students to help them achieve academic success, aid adults of various disabilities with their daily living needs and support them as active members of the community, renovate homes and abandoned buildings for senior citizens and low income families, provide mentoring and safe places for children to learn and grow during non-school hours, assist in cleaning waterways and developing community gardens, and help communities prepare to respond to disasters or emergencies.

How much time is involved? What do I receive?

Full-time AmeriCorps members perform 1,700 hours of service and upon completion earn an education award of $5,350. Full-time AmeriCorps members also receive: a living allowance of $11,800 per year; health insurance; and childcare, if eligible. Part-time members perform 900 hours of service and upon completion earn an education award of $2,675.

Bonner Leader Program -The College of New Jersey
Program Description: The New Jersey AmeriCorps Bonner Leader Program mobilizes the talents and interests of college students and community members, the resources of institutions of higher education, and the expertise of community-based organizations to address issues of hunger, mentoring, and other human needs. Program Description: AmeriCorps members at the Cerebral Palsy Association of Middlesex County assist children and adults with developmental and related disabilities throughout New Jersey. Members offer support to children in the Lakeview School in Edison and in adult day and residential programs in Middlesex, Somerset, Monmouth and Ocean Counties. The major service goal is to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their greatest degree of independence and community integration. Program Description: New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC) conducts a unique partnership with the Paterson Public Schools and a diverse coalition of community organizations to implement the Paterson Community School Corps (PCSC), a comprehensive initiative offering an evidence-based prevention and support services to children and families in five schools in Paterson. The program design of the PCSC is rooted in the nationally-recognized community schools model, a place and a set of partnerships that mobilizes an array of community resources, such as after school, youth development, family support, health and mental health, parenting and adult education, employment, violence prevention, and connects them to student learning and development. Community schools recognize that multiple supports such as physical, emotional, social and academic are required for all students to succeed. Schools become centers that also strengthen families and communities. Program Description: New Jersey After 3 (NJA3) provides afterschool programming in public schools throughout the state, serving thousands of students every year. AmeriCorps members with NJA3 are placed with afterschool programs to engage the students in service learning activities that build their sense of civic responsibility, enhance their academic lessons with hands-on activities, and address vital needs in their communities. Public Interest Research Foundation of New Jersey Energy Corps

Program Description: NJPIRG's Energy Service Corps is a joint project between the NJ Public Interest Research Group and AmeriCorps based on college campuses throughout the state. Our goal is to address the problem of energy inefficiency that is ultimately helping cause global warming. We know that people in the community want to save energy, cut the cost of their energy bills, and make their homes warmer. Energy Service Corps gives people the tools and knowledge they need to stop energy from seeping through the cracks in the windows, serves immediate needs, and is the catalyst in the community to greater energy efficiency. We will do this by holding community forums and workshops, going into K-12 classrooms and teaching children fun lessons about energy and the environment, by going door-to-door in communities and teaching people about simple things they can do in their homes and actually helping to weatherize local buildings and homes. The Salvation Army

Program Description: The Salvation Army Newark Area Services (TSA) members serve clients involved in the Grand Families Success Center and the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Intervention Through Targeted Outreach program, through the Boys and Girls Club. Members are trained as assistant case workers and mentor, tutor, and lead support groups with clients. Program Description: The Bridging the Digital Divide AmeriCorps program helps adult learners improve their computer literacy. AmeriCorps members teach keyboarding, internet navigation, email, and basic Microsoft Word and Excel to Union County residents. In addition, members help students improve their basic skills as well as English proficiency through the use of technology. For example, AmeriCorps members connect the adult learners to their community by teaching these adult students research and presentation skills using the internet and PowerPoint. Members encourage these adult learners to actively participate their community.

New Jersey Coalition against Sexual Assault

Program Description: The NJCASA AmeriCorps programs 18 members serve at 12 of New Jerseys 22 sexual violence programs as well as the NJCASA offices. Members provide outreach to the local community on sexual violence and are involved with strategies to prevent sexual violence. Members also recruit and develop volunteers for the sexual violence programs including the 24 hour hotline, outreach, and other assistance. Many members also serve as advocates for survivors of sexual violence and their loved ones, by providing support through the hotlines and through accompaniments to the police station, hospitals, or court. Through their service, NJCASAs AmeriCorps members gain experience and knowledge around sexual violence. Many members intend to continue in the sexual violence field and their service as NJCASA AmeriCorps members provides them with skills and understanding that furthers their goals. Corporation for National and Community Service New Jersey

AmeriCorps VISTA is an AmeriCorps program for individuals age 18 and older. AmeriCorps VISTA Members assist communities in developing their capacity to address local issues. They work to increase housing opportunities, develop literacy programs, establish credit unions, and improve health care in under-served communities. Since 1965, more than 100,000 VISTAs have joined forces with 12,000 public agencies and nonprofit groups to help communities across the country. Members must be at least 18; there is no upper age limit. Different AmeriCorps VISTA sponsors request members with different qualifications. Some projects require people with college study or a bachelors degree. Other projects may emphasize experience or skills rather than formal education. The ability to speak Spanish is especially helpful in certain areas.

Senior Corps connects todays over 55s with the people and organizations that need them most. We help them become mentors, coaches or companions to people in need, or contribute their job skills and expertise to community projects and organizations. Conceived during John F. Kennedy's presidency, Senior Corps currently links more than 500,000 Americans to service opportunities. Their contributions of skills, knowledge, and experience make a real difference to individuals, nonprofits, and faith-based and other community organizations throughout the United States. Senior Corps offers several ways to get involved. Volunteers receive guidance and training so they can make a contribution that suits their talents, interests, and availability. Retired Senior Volunteer Program connects volunteers age 55 and over with service opportunities in their communities that match their skills and availability. From building houses to immunizing children, from enhancing the capacity of non-profit organizations to improving and protecting the environment, RSVP volunteers put their unique talents to work to make a difference. The Foster Grandparent Program connects volunteers age 60 and over with children and young people with exceptional needs. Volunteers mentor, support, and help some of the most vulnerable children in the United States. The Senior Companion Program brings together volunteers age 60 and over with adults in their community who have difficulty with the simple tasks of day-to-day living. Companions help out on a personal level by assisting with shopping and light chores, interacting with doctors, or just making a friendly visit.
