ADDITIONAL GEO-TECHNICAL INVESTIGATION FOR PROPOSED
CONSTRUCTION OF 1500 MTPD AMMONIA PLANT & UTILITY FACILITIES
PROJECT AT THE SITE OF TALOJA, NAVI MUMBAI, MAHARASHTRA
1.0 INTRODUCTION –
1.1 Client M/s Toyo Engineering India Private Limited, Mumbai proposed
additional geotechnical investigation work by drilling 3 boreholes using hydraulic
rotary drilling rig especially in the area of i) existing pond, ii) Polish water tank area
and iii) Raw water treatment area.
Note: Ground levels are taken with reference to B.M. of RL 100.0 m taken on top of
adjacent road.
1.2 Soil samples and rock cores collected during drilling at regular intervals are
properly numbered and rock core samples, spt samples are preserved in wooden
boxes. Photograph of all core boxes are taken and incorporated in the report.
Necessary laboratory tests on selected soil, rock and ground water samples are
conducted in the laboratory.
1.4 Based on the field inspection, considering the borehole logs and laboratory test
results and taking in to account the type of structures, following final geotechnical
report is presented here with incorporating net safe bearing capacity values of
different soil and rock stratums for foundation design.
2.1 For proposed investigation, Hydraulic rotary type drilling rig fitted to a tripod
frame having all drilling accessories is used. This rig is suitable for all geotechnical
investigation works and has an arrangement for driving and extraction of casing,
boring and drilling. Conducting SPT, collecting UDS, and conducting other tests such
as In-situ packer permeability tests are possible with this drilling rig.
2.2 Boreholes of 100 mm diameter, as per specifications are drilled through filled
up soil and overburden soil up to the rock stratum. After rock stratum is reached,
method of drilling is changed to purely rotary. Double tube core barrel and ‘Nx’ sized
diamond bits are used to drill through bedrock. Rock core samples recovered in
drilling are arranged sequentially and numbered and subsequently calculated % Core
Recover and % Rock Quality Designation values for each drilling run. Based on
visual inspection, petrography descriptions are done for all the drilled rock cores. All
samples are stored in sturdy good quality wooden boxes and boxes are identified.
2.4 Ground water table is recorded after gap of 24 hours after completion of the
borehole.
2.5 Selected soil, rock and ground water samples are tested in laboratory for
requisite test. All Lab test results are attached as an annexure.
3.1 Data of 3borehole logs and laboratory test results are studied carefully. Mainly
following three stratums are available at these borehole locations.
Below existing ground levels, at borehole NBH-1 location filled up soil layer is
available up to 1.0 m depth whereas at NBH-2 and NBH-3 locations, sandy clay
(black cotton soil) layer is available up to 1.0 m and 1.5 m depths. Laboratory test has
been carried out on disturbed soil samples collected from this layer. Summary of test
results is given below.
Gravel % 0
Sand % 7
Silt % 54 to 61
Clay % 32 to 39
Liquid Limit % 65 to 71
Plastic Limit % 31 to 33
Plasticity Index % 34 to 38
Shrinkage Limit % 7 to 10
Below completely weathered rock layer i.e. from depths of 2.0 m at NBH-1 location,
2.5 m at NBH-2 location and 4.5 m at NBH-3 location is available gray basalt bed rock
layer. All boreholes are terminated in this layer at 10.0 m depth. Quality of basalt bed
rock is highly to moderately weathered for thickness of 3.5 m to 4.0 m at NBH-1 and
NBH-2 locations followed by good quality i.e. compact basalt bed rock. In highly to
moderately weathered zone, % Core Recovery (CR) values are varying from 36 % to
66 % and % Rock Quality Designation (RQD) values are varying from 0 % to 45 %. In
compact basalt bed rock zone, % CR values are varying from 57 % to 100 % and %
RQD values are varying from 15 % to 100 %. Soaked UCS values of rock cores are
varying from 12.5 MPa to 54.5 MPa indicating rock of low to high strength. Summary
of other lab test results is given below.
3.5 Ground water table is available at 1.0 m to 5.0 m depths below existing ground
levels.
3.6 Photograph of all core boxes showing rock cores are given below.
NBH-1
NBH-3
3.7 Chemical tests such as pH, sulphates and chlorides has been evaluated on
collected ground water samples. Summary of test results is given below.
4.2 Foundations of the proposed structures can be placed on both layers as per
requirements at minimum 1.5 m depth below existing ground levels. Bearing capacity
and settlement calculations of both stratums are given below.
qult = ((0.6*1.5) *(42.92-1) *1.2*1.0) + (0.5 *3.0 * 0.8 * 66.19 *0.8 * 1.0) = 108.81 T/m2.
4.3.2 It is to be noted that completely weathered rock layer will undergo only
immediate settlement.
Immediate settlement can be calculated using equation Si = (Cd * qnet * B * (1-2))/ E
Where,
Si = Immediate settlement in mm
qnet = Footing pressure intensity = 30.0 T/m2
B = width of footing = 3.0 m
= Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 for very dense soil
Cd= Shape and rigidity factor = 0.75 for H/B ratio = 1.0
E = modulus of elasticity = Es = 1200 (N + 6) KPa for Gravelly sand. (Ref: Table 5-6,
Foundation Analysis and design by Joseph E Bowels).
For design N value equal to 40,Es = 55,200 KPa = 5520 T/m2
Adopt Es = 3,000 T/m2
Hence,
Immediate settlement = (0.75 * 30.0 * 3.0 * (1 – 0.32)) / 3000) * 1000 = 20.475 mm
4.3.3 Similarly, Safe Bearing Capacity and settlement calculations has been done for
different widths and shape of footings.Allowable bearing pressure values are given in
conclusion and recommendations chapter.
4.4.1 Safe bearing capacity of bed rock stratum can be calculated using average
rock core values. Calculation is given below.
qs = qc Nj
Where,
qs = safe bearing pressure
qc = Minimumuni-axial compressive strength of rock cores =12.5MPa i.e. 125 Kg/cm2
Nj= empirical coefficient depending on the spacing of discontinuities= 0.1
Hence, qs = 125 * 0.1 = 12.5 Kg/cm2 = 125 T/m2.
Applying correction for submerged condition under water table considering rock with
continuous joints with opening 1 to 5 mm wide
Corrected qs = 125 * ¾ = 93.75 T/m2.
Restricted to 50 T/m2.
5.1 At all three borehole locations, mainly following three stratums are available.
5.2 Stratum one i.e. filled up soil / sandy clay (black cotton soil) is having swelling
potential. Hence, this soil should not be used for supporting any foundation. Further,
this soil should not be used for backfilling purpose.
5.3 Stratum two i.e. brown completely weathered rock layer and stratum three i.e.
gray basalt bed rock layer are suitable for supporting foundation of the proposed
structures.
5.4 Borehole wise recommended depth of foundations below finished ground level
along with allowable bearing pressure values for different type of footings is given
below. Finished Ground Level (FGL) equal to 99.85 m is considered for
recommending depth of foundations.
5.5 NBH-1
5.6 NBH-2
5.7 NBH-3
5.8 Sulphate contents in ground water samples are in class II as per Table 4 of IS
456: 2000 and chloride contents are more than permissible limits.
Necessary precautions should be taken against long term corrosion of concrete and
steel.
