1.4 Based on the field inspection, considering the borehole logs and laboratory test
results and taking in to account the type of structures, following final geotechnical
report is presented here with incorporating net safe bearing capacity values of
different soil and rock stratums for foundation design.

1.5 2.0 METHODOLOGY OF INVESTIGATION

2.1 For proposed investigation, Hydraulic rotary type drilling rig fitted to a tripod
frame having all drilling accessories is used. This rig is suitable for all geotechnical
investigation works and has an arrangement for driving and extraction of casing,
boring and drilling. Conducting SPT, collecting UDS, and conducting other tests such
as In-situ packer permeability tests are possible with this drilling rig.

2.2 Boreholes of 100 mm diameter, as per specifications are drilled through filled
up soil and overburden soil up to the rock stratum. After rock stratum is reached,
method of drilling is changed to purely rotary. Double tube core barrel and ‘Nx’ sized
diamond bits are used to drill through bedrock. Rock core samples recovered in
drilling are arranged sequentially and numbered and subsequently calculated % Core
Recover and % Rock Quality Designation values for each drilling run. Based on
visual inspection, petrography descriptions are done for all the drilled rock cores. All
samples are stored in sturdy good quality wooden boxes and boxes are identified.

2.3 In overburden soil and completely weathered rock stratum, standard

penetration tests (SPT) are conducted at an interval of 1.5 m. Standard Penetration
Tests (SPT) are conducted to obtain the 'N' value i.e. number of blows required to
penetrate 30cm of SPT split spoon under a weight of 63.5 Kg, falling through a height
of 75.0 cm. Borehole is first drilled to required depth and the bottom is cleaned. Split
spoon sampler fitted to drill rods is then lowered in to the borehole and rested at the
bottom. The split spoon sampler is then driven into the soil up to a depth of 60 cm and
while driving, the number of blows required to penetrate every 15cm are recorded.
The blows for the first 15cm are taken as the seating blows and those for the next 30
cm are entered as 'N' value at that particular depth, where the test is begun. The test
spoon also collects samples in the split spoon assembly, which are treated as

disturbed soil samples. At depths where 30 cm penetration is not possible,

penetration for 50 numbers of blows are recorded and entered as a refusal N value.

2.4 Ground water table is recorded after gap of 24 hours after completion of the
borehole.
2.5 Selected soil, rock and ground water samples are tested in laboratory for
requisite test. All Lab test results are attached as an annexure.

Sulphates, (ppm) 525 to 638 Class II /Table 4 / IS-456(2000)

Chlorides, (ppm) 1429 to 1648 More than permissible limits

Results are attached as an annexure.

4.0 DISCUSSION AND BEARING CAPACITY ANALYSIS

4.1 As stated above, completely weathered rock stratum is available at shallow

depths i.e. 1.0 m to 1.5 m depths below existing ground levels followed by basalt bed
rock layer.

4.2 Foundations of the proposed structures can be placed on both layers as per
requirements at minimum 1.5 m depth below existing ground levels. Bearing capacity
and settlement calculations of both stratums are given below.

4.3 Bearing Capacity and settlement calculations of completely weathered

rock stratum. Sample calculation is given for square footing of width 3.0 m.

4.3.1 Bearing capacity of completely weathered rock stratum can be calculated

considering it as a very dense cohesion less soil layer adopting angle of internal
friction value equal to 37 Degree.
Ultimate bearing capacity can be calculated using general bearing capacity equation
i.e. qnu = 1 D (Nq –1) sqdq+ 0.5 B 2Ns dT/m2
Where,
qnu = ultimate bearing capacity in T/m2
1 = submerged density of soil above base of footing = 0.6 T/m3
D = depth of footing = 1.5 m minimum

(AN ISO: 9001-2008 CERTIFIED COMPANY)
PCF
Address: E-59, Chembur Naka, S. T. Road, Near Bank of India, Chembur, Mumbai-71.
Nq and N= bearing capacity factor = 42.92 and 66.19 for  = 37 degree
2 = submerged density of soil below base of footing = 0.8 T/m3
B = width of footing = 3.0 m
sq and s = shape factors = 1.2 and 0.8 for square footings
dq and d= depth factors = 1.0

qult = ((0.6*1.5) *(42.92-1) *1.2*1.0) + (0.5 *3.0 * 0.8 * 66.19 *0.8 * 1.0) = 108.81 T/m2.

Adopting factor of safety equal to 3.0, qsafe= 36.27 T/m2

Restrict safe bearing capacity to 30.0 T/m2.

4.3.2 It is to be noted that completely weathered rock layer will undergo only
immediate settlement.
Immediate settlement can be calculated using equation Si = (Cd * qnet * B * (1-2))/ E
Where,
Si = Immediate settlement in mm
qnet = Footing pressure intensity = 30.0 T/m2
B = width of footing = 3.0 m
= Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 for very dense soil
Cd= Shape and rigidity factor = 0.75 for H/B ratio = 1.0
E = modulus of elasticity = Es = 1200 (N + 6) KPa for Gravelly sand. (Ref: Table 5-6,
Foundation Analysis and design by Joseph E Bowels).
For design N value equal to 40,Es = 55,200 KPa = 5520 T/m2
Adopt Es = 3,000 T/m2
Hence,
Immediate settlement = (0.75 * 30.0 * 3.0 * (1 – 0.32)) / 3000) * 1000 = 20.475 mm

4.3.3 Similarly, Safe Bearing Capacity and settlement calculations has been done for
different widths and shape of footings.Allowable bearing pressure values are given in
conclusion and recommendations chapter.

PCF

4.4 Bearing Capacity and settlement calculations of bed rock stratum.

4.4.1 Safe bearing capacity of bed rock stratum can be calculated using average
rock core values. Calculation is given below.
qs = qc Nj
Where,
qs = safe bearing pressure
qc = Minimumuni-axial compressive strength of rock cores =12.5MPa i.e. 125 Kg/cm2
Nj= empirical coefficient depending on the spacing of discontinuities= 0.1
Hence, qs = 125 * 0.1 = 12.5 Kg/cm2 = 125 T/m2.
Applying correction for submerged condition under water table considering rock with
continuous joints with opening 1 to 5 mm wide
Corrected qs = 125 * ¾ = 93.75 T/m2.

Restricted to 50 T/m2.

4.4.2 Immediate settlement of rock stratum can be calculated using equation

Si = (p * B * (1-u2) * I) / E
Where,
Si = Immediate settlement in mm
p = Footing pressure intensity = 50 T/m2
B = width of Raft = 15.0 m
u= Poisson’s ratio = 0.2for rock stratum
I = Influence factor = 1.0
E = modulus of elasticity in T/m2 = 20.01 GPa i.e. 20,00,000 T/m2 (Lowest value from
laboratory test results).
Adopting 1/10th of laboratory value E = 2,00,000 T/m2.

Adopt E for calculation = 1,00,000 T/m2

Hence,
Immediate settlement Si = ((50 * 15 * (1 - 0.22) * 1.0 / 1,00,000) * 1000 = 7.2 mm.

5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 At all three borehole locations, mainly following three stratums are available.

STRATUM 1 : Filled up soil / Sandy clay (Black cotton soil)

STRATUM 2 : Brown completely weathered rock

STRATUM 3 : Gray Basalt bed rock

5.2 Stratum one i.e. filled up soil / sandy clay (black cotton soil) is having swelling
potential. Hence, this soil should not be used for supporting any foundation. Further,
this soil should not be used for backfilling purpose.

5.3 Stratum two i.e. brown completely weathered rock layer and stratum three i.e.
gray basalt bed rock layer are suitable for supporting foundation of the proposed
structures.

5.4 Borehole wise recommended depth of foundations below finished ground level
along with allowable bearing pressure values for different type of footings is given
below. Finished Ground Level (FGL) equal to 99.85 m is considered for
recommending depth of foundations.
