Hadestown: Teen Edition

Hello!
We are so excited that you are interested in joining the cast of Hadestown:
Teen Edition. We are confident that this will be an incredibly exciting
opportunity for all involved.

Hadestown: Teen Edition tells a moving story of hope and how we continue
to find light even when darkness seems imminent. It is a sung-through show
ripe with beautiful, poetic language that will prove to be a rewarding
challenge for those who are up to the task.

If this is your first time auditioning for a show at the high school, we are
incredibly excited to welcome you to the team! The theatre can be a
wonderful place to meet new people, push yourself outside of your comfort
zone, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

To returning students, I am once again asking you to take on something we

have never done before, but you have proven time and time again that you
are capable of tackling the mountains that I seek to climb.

We look forward to seeing you at auditions and we cannot wait to begin this
journey with you! Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

~Jess
How Auditions Work
Each student will sign up for one fifteen-minute time slot. At that specified time, the
production staff will call each student in individually to perform a contemporary
musical theater song of your choice with a track that you found on the internet. It is not
required that songs be memorized, but we are looking for actors who are able to tell a
story through music, so it is highly encouraged to be as familiar as possible with the
material. We understand that auditioning can be nerve-racking, but this is a chance for
us to get to know you as a performer and to see what type of preparation you will bring
to the role. Each student will also be asked to choose one movement call to attend. For
the movement call, make sure you wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in
and tennis shoes.

Important Dates
Auditions: Tuesday, May 28 from 3:15-7:30 pm, followed by a dance call from 7:30-
8:30 pm
Callbacks: Thursday, May 30 via scheduled time; possible callbacks the week of 6/3
Rehearsals begin for both leads and featured workers in July
Tech Week: Saturday, November 2 - Wednesday November 6. These are required
for all cast and crew.
Performances: Thursday, November 7 - Sunday, November 10

Rehearsal Attendance
We do our absolute best to accommodate as many different schedules as possible and
strive to have an estimated rehearsal schedule available a month in advance.
Participating in a show is a group activity, so attendance at scheduled rehearsals is vital
to ensure the success of your fellow actors. Missing rehearsals for any reason may
result in the removal from certain scenes/ numbers or your role being recast by
production staff. Please note that it is your responsibility to review and learn any
material that you have missed outside of rehearsal via resources provided. Jess is
happy to work with you if you schedule a time ahead of rehearsal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How should I prepare for my audition/ what does an audition consist of?
Please prepare a contemporary musical theatre song that you can sing to with a track.
Many musical tracks can be found on YouTube. See example here.
We are looking for moving storytelling in the initial audition and will ask for material
specific to Hadestown: Teen Edition for callbacks.
Sign up for auditions here
Fill out audition form here. Please note that this must be filled out prior to your
audition.

Q: What is the audition room like?

Some production staff members will be sitting in the room taking notes and asking you
what you’ve prepared. After performing, you may receive notes from the panel and be
asked to perform again. Please know that if you are not asked to sing again, it does not
mean that your audition went poorly. It simply means we saw everything we needed to
in your first run.
At the movement call, you will learn a short combination. After learning, you will be
split up into small groups and asked to perform. We know that this material has been
learned quickly, and we are not looking for perfection. Once again, we want to see who
can bring character and story to the movement.

Q: What is the production staff looking for?

We are looking for students with a deep love of theater who are excited about working
hard to tell a fantastic story! We know that this is a big commitment, and we want to
work with students who are committed to working as a team to tackle that challenge.
At auditions, we are looking for actors who are prepared, polite, and have made
choices regarding character within their chosen song.

Q: Can I be in the show and participate in another activity or sport?

Yes! Many students participate in multiple activities or sports and also participate in the
musical. Please know that we do our best to work around student schedules, but
students who choose to do multiple activities must be prepared to learn and work on
materials outside of rehearsal in order to participate in the show.

Q: How will information be communicated once rehearsal starts?

Once you have agreed to join the cast, you will receive an invitation to TeamSnap. This
app allows the production staff to communicate easily and efficiently with the entire
team and will replace all email communication once rehearsal is underway.
Hadestown: Teen Edition Synopsis
This intriguing and beautiful folk opera delivers a deeply resonate and
defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love
stories - that of young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice and that of immortal
King Hades and Lady Persephone. Hadestown invites audiences on a
journey to the underworld and back. Inspired by the traditions of classic
American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, this sung-through
musical pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against
love.
