1.What are the nutrients of our food ?
A : Carbohydrates , proteins , fats , vitamins , mineral salts and water are the nutrients of our food.

2.How do proteins help us ?


A : Proteins help us to repair cells and for the growth of new cells.

3.Why we should take more carbohydrates ?


A : We should take more carbohydrates to get more energy.

4.What does digestion means ?


A : Digestion is a process by which complex food substances change into simple forms.

5.What happens to the food in the stomach ?


A : The food in the stomach gets mixed with the digestive juices produced by the walls of the stomach.

6.What is food preservation ?


A : The methods of treating food so that it can be stored without getting spoiled is called food preservation.

7.What are the different methods of food preservation ?


A : The food can be preserved by the following methods – 1.Cold storage 2.Canning 3.Salting
4.Drying 5.Sweetening

8.What is Canning ?
A : The method of preserving food in air tight containers is called Canning.

1.Why do all living things need food ?
A : All living things need food 1.To get energy 2.To grow 3.To repair tissues 4.Food also helps to
keep the body healthy and strong.

2.Name the different organs that are involved in the digestive system.
A : The different organs of digestive system are –
Mouth → Food pipe → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Anus.

3.What happens to the food in the mouth ?


A : 1.As soon as the food enters the mouth a liquid called Saliva lubricates the food. 2.Teeth helps in grinding
the food where as tongue helps in mixing the food with saliva. 3.Now the food is ready for swallowing easily.

4.What are Microbes ? Name the types of Microbes.


A : Microbes are minute organisms which can not be seen by naked eyes. There are four types of microbes.
1.Bacteria 2.Viruses 3.Protozoa 4.Fungi

III.Answer the following : 3M


1.Write the function of Small intestine.
A : 1.Bil juice from the liver and pancreatic juice from the pancreas are secreted in Small intestine. 2.This acts
upon starch and fats. 3.Intestinal juice produced in the small intestine is mixed with the food. 4.This helps in
the complete digestion of carbohydrates , proteins and fats.

2.What are the four types of teeth ? What are their function ?
A : The four types of teeth are : 1.Incisors 2.Canines 3.Premolars 4.Molars
1.Incisors – They are sharp and flattened. They help to cut and bite the food.
2.Canines – They are cone shaped. They are used for tearing the food.
3.Premolars – They are used for chewing.
4.Molars – They are the largest teeth. They are used for grinding the food.

3.What are the uses of Microbes ?


A : The microbes are useful to us in different ways :
1.Some bacteria bring about fertility of the soil by rotting the dead matter
2. Some bacteria changes sugar in to alcohol.
3. Some bacteria make the surrounding clean by breaking the waste material into simple substance.
4.Some bacteria are present in the intestine of some animals and helps in the digestion of food.

5. Some bacteria helps in making some vitamins.


6. Some fungi like yeast is used in baking bread and making wine.

4.What are the harmful effects of microbes ?


A : There are some microbes which are harmful to human beings , animals and plants.
1.Some bacteria spoils the food and make it unfit for eating 2.Some microbes causes disease in plants and
animals (a)Virus – common cold , measles (b)Bacteria – Tuberculosis , typhoid
(c)Moulds – Ring worm , wheat rust (d)Protozoa – Malaria , Amoebic dysentery.

19.Saliva is the undigested juice present in the mouth.
20.A low temperature does not allow the germs to multiply rapidly.
