M09: BEARINGS
Engr. Rahul Islam
Executive Engineer (Mech.)
1.0 INTRODUCTION
- Bearings are load carrying mechanical machine component.
- No machine can run without bearing.
- Different or same machine use different bearings.
- So, a brief knowledge about different types of bearings, construction, material etc.
will be helpful to every technical person.

Main functions of bearing are:

►To carry the load of moving parts ►To help the shaft for easy movement
►To reduce friction ►To hold the shaft

2.0 CLASSIFICATION OF BEARINGS

Mainly 02 types:
 Anti-friction or Rolling Elements &
 Plain or Journal Bearings

3.0 TYPE OF ANTI-FRICTION BEARING

Anti-friction bearings are mainly 02 types:
- Ball bearing &
- Roller bearing
A. Ball Bearing:
Different ball bearings are -
a) Deep groove ball bearing
b) Angular contact ball bearing
c) Self-aligning ball bearing

B. Roller Bearing:
Different roller bearings are -
a) Cylindrical roller bearing
b) Taper roller bearing
c) Spherical roller bearing

4.0 CONSTRUCTION OF ANTI-FRICTION BEARING

Anti-friction bearing consist of:
a) Outer ring
b) Inner ring
c) Ball/Roller
d) Cage
e) Inner raceway &
f) Outer raceway

A. Ball Bearing:
Ball bearing is point contact type bearing.

a) Deep groove ball bearing

- Balls are placed in the central groove of the
rings.
- The race way (groove) is too much deep.
- The shape of the two rings is similar.
- Can accommodate radial load & also some axial
load.

b) Angular contact ball bearing

- Balls of these bearing contacts at an angle with
the central line.
- Thickness of each ring is thick at ball-seat side
and thin at other side.
- Designed for combined loads.

c) Self-aligning ball bearing

- Balls (double row) are fixed on inner ring.
- This Bearing is suitable for misalignment.

B. Roller Bearing:
Roller Bearing is line contact type bearing.

a) Cylindrical roller bearing

- Roller is cylindrical shape.
- Can accommodate heavy radial load.

b) Taper roller bearing

- Roller is taper shape.
- Can accommodate heavy combined loads.

c) Spherical roller bearing

- Have single/double rows of rollers.
- These are self-aligning.
- Diameter of the roller is maximum at center as
sphere.
- High radial load & axial load can bear.

5.0 TYPES OF PLAIN BEARING

- Plain bearings are surface contact type.
- Their one point is common that they are shaped as cylinders/ sections of cylinders.
- Materials and construction methods vary, but all bearings serve the same purpose.
- Main types of plain bearings are: ► Bush type, ► Split type & ► Tilting Pad type

A. Bush Type:
- The term bushing refers to the thin wall type
bearing.
- Its strength comes from the thickness and
rigidity of the housing.
- Most bushings are made of brass, bronze,
gun-metal etc.
- Suitable for light loads & low-speed
applications.

B. Split Type:
- Split types bearings are generally divided into two parts.
- Split bearing can be replaced on a shaft more easily.
- Large diameter bearings are commonly this type.

C. Tilting Pad Type:

- Consists of several Babbitted bearing pads or segments (05 is the most
common number) that are free to pivot.
- Generally used in very high speed machines.
- Tilting pad thrust bearing are also used in high -speed machines.

6.0 ROLLING ELEMENT BEARING DESIGNASTION

- Each metric standard rolling element bearing has a specific basic designation
which indicates the type of bearing and standard dimensional sizes.
- These designations are of 3, 4 or 5 figures or a combination of letters

- Bearings with bore diameters less than 10 mm are designated by 3 figures; the
last figure represents the bore diameter in mm.
- Last 2 digits indicates d/5 mm (d is bore diameter having minimum value 20 mm)
- SKF bearing basic & supplementary designations are mentioned briefly:
1 for self-aligning ball bearings
2 for spherical roller bearings
3 for taper roller bearings
4 for double row deep groove ball bearings
5 for thrust ball bearings
6 for single row deep groove ball bearings
7 for single row angular contact ball bearings
N for cylindrical roller bearings (NU, NJ, NUP, N types) etc.

7.0 BEARING MOUNTING AND DISMOUNTING METHODS

Bearing Assembly
- By Bush & Hammer
- By Ram Pressure
- By Oil bath
- By Induction heater
- By Heating chamber etc.

Bearing Disassembly
- By Bearing Puller
- By Bush & Hammer
- By Ram pressure
