§ A wildlife biologist from Assam has been honoured with a leading UK
wildlife charity award for conserving the endangered greater
adjutant or Hargila (as called locally by community in Assam), one of
the world’s rarest storks.

§ Dr. Barman received the trophy from charity patron Princess Anne –
the Princess Royal, the sister of King Charles III, at the Royal
Geographical Society award ceremony in London, United Kingdom.

§ The birds are mainly found in the wetland areas of North -East ,
especially Assam. The population of the birds, which had dropped to
around 450, has increased to over 1800 in the areas mainly due to
the conservation efforts of Dr Purnima and her Hargila Army.
• Whitley Fund for Nature is a charity registered in the United
Kingdom. It was established in 1993.

§ A Hindu marriage is not an event for "song and dance", "wining

and dining" or a commercial transaction, the Supreme Court has
observed and said it cannot be recognised in the "absence of a
valid ceremony" under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955.

Masih said where a Hindu marriage is not performed in
accordance with the applicable rites or ceremonies such as
'saptapadi' (taking seven steps by the groom and the bride
jointly before the sacred fire), the marriage will not be

 About Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 (HMA Act)

§ It codifies the law relating to marriage among Hindus.

• It provides for the ceremonies and registration for Hindu

marriage but also lays down rules regarding Divorce.

• A Hindu by birth or by conversion is the subject of the

HMA Act.

• The definition of Hindu under the HMA Act includes

Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh as well.

• Customary practices (Reeti-Riwaz) are well respected
under the HMA Act. However, marriage ceremonies are subject to
customs and accepted accordingly.

• Saptapadi, i.e., steps taken by the bride and groom before holy fire, is
a necessary ritual for marriage among Hindus.

• Section 5 of the Act specifies that it is illegal to have two living wives
at once, which is known as bigamy.

• A marriage is considered null and void if anyone one or both the

people get married being mentally unfit.

• In such cases, the couple must get legal consent before getting married.

§ India has lodged a strong protest with China for carrying out
construction activities in the Shaksgam valley

§ Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir

Jaiswal said that the Shaksgam valley is a part of India and
New Delhi never accepted the so-called China-Pakistan
boundary pact of 1963 through which Islamabad “unlawfully”
attempted to cede the area to Beijing.
§ The Shaksgam Valley, or Trans Karakoram Tract, is part of
the Hunza-Gilgit region of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir
(POK) and is a disputed territory claimed by India but
controlled by Pakistan.

§ It borders Xinjiang Province of the People’s Republic of

China (PRC) to the north, the Northern Areas of POK to the
south and west, and the Siachen Glacier region to the
east.

§ It was ceded to China by Pakistan in 1963, when both

countries signed a boundary agreement to settle their
border differences.
§ However, Article 6 of the Pak-China agreement clearly
stated that “the two parties have agreed that after the
settlement of the Kashmir dispute between Pakistan and
India, the sovereign authority concerned will reopen
negotiations with the Government of the People's
Republic of China, on the boundary as described in Article
Two of the present agreement.
