8.1 Exploring the Sine Law

Minds On

The sine law is used to solve _________________________ (triangle that __________

contain a 90° angle).

It is used when you are given two angles and an __________________________ side, or
two sides and an __________________________ angle.

Given ΔABC,

Notice that the largest angle is opposite

the longest side.

Are the ratios of the sine of the angles and the opposite sides the same?

YES or NO

Given ΔDEF, determine the ratios of the sine of the angles and the opposite sides.

Action

The Sine Law

Unknown Angle

sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵 sin 𝐶

= =
𝑎 𝑏 𝑐

Unknown Side

𝑎 𝑏 𝑐
= =
sin 𝐴 sin 𝐵 sin 𝐶

Example 1: Determine the length of side a.

Step 1: Determine ∠A.

Step 2: Set up the sine ratio.

Example 2: Determine ∠F.

Consolidation

Example 3: Solve ΔPQR, where ∠P = 63°, p = 5.5 cm, and r = 4.7.

(To solve is to find all the unknown sides and angles)

8.2 Applying the Sine Law

Minds On

Determine x to the nearest tenth of a centimeter.

Action

1. A cell phone pole is supported by two wires. One wire forms a 48° angle with the ground
and the other wire forms a 72° angle with the ground. If the wires are 20 m apart, what
is the height of the pole?

2. Two fire towers are 250 m apart. A fire is located 53° from the one tower and 87° from
the other. Determine the distance between the fire and each fire tower.

3. From a certain point, the angle of elevation to the top of a school is 32°. At a point 9 m
closer, the angle of elevation is 48°. Calculate the height of the school.

4. Given the diagram, calculate the height of the cliff to one decimal place.

Consolidation

1. From a window of a building, the angle of depression of a parked car is 24°. From a
window 15 m lower, the angle of depression is 19°. How far from the foot of the building
is the parked car?

8.3 Exploring the Cosine Law

Minds On

Use the Pythagorean theorem to compare c 2 with a2 + b2, when ∠C < 90°.

Use the Pythagorean theorem to compare c2 with a2 + b2, when ∠C > 90°.

Action

The cosine law is used to solve _________________________.

It is used when you are given 2 sides and the contained angle or three sides.

The Cosine Law

Unknown Angle

𝑏2 + 𝑐 2 − 𝑎2 𝑎2 + 𝑐 2 − 𝑏2 𝑎2 + 𝑐 2 − 𝑏2
cos 𝐴 = cos 𝐵 = cos 𝐵 =
2𝑏𝑐 2𝑎𝑐 2𝑎𝑐
Unknown Side

𝑎 2 = 𝑏2 + 𝑐 2 − 2𝑏𝑐 cos 𝐴 𝑏2 = 𝑎 2 + 𝑐 2 − 2𝑎𝑐 cos 𝐵 𝑐 2 = 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2 − 2𝑎𝑏 cos 𝐶

Example 1: Find a.

Example 2: Find b.

Example 3: Find ∠C.

Example 4: Solve ΔXYZ

(To solve is to find all the unknown sides and angles)

8.4 Applying the Cosine Law

Minds On

Example 1: Determine ∠A to the nearest degree.

Example 2: Determine x to the nearest tenth of a centimeter.

Action

1. During a figure skating routine, Luna and Eli skate apart with an angle of 124° between
them. Luna skates for 15 m and Eli skates for 20 m. How far apart are Luna and Eli?

2. A bridge is supported by triangular braces. If the sides of each brace have lengths 18
m, 20 m, and 34 m, determine the measure of the angle opposite the 34 m side.

3. An octagon is inscribed in a circle of a radius 15.8 cm. What is the perimeter, to the
nearest tenth of a centimetre, of the octagon?

8.5 Solving Oblique Triangle Problems

1. How high is the mountain PS?

2. A flagpole 12.4 m high is placed on top of a building. From point C, the angles of
elevation to the top and bottom of the tower are measured as 48.2° and 42.5°. Find
the height of the tower.

3. A navigator on a boat measures the angle between the course of the boat and the
lighthouse on shore to be 70°. After the boat has travelled 3000 m, the navigator
measures the angle to be 100°. How far, to the nearest metre, was the boat from the
lighthouse at the time of the first sighting?

4. A ship travels 70 km on a bearing of [N27°E], and the travels on bearing of [S33°E]

for 180 km. Find the distance of the end of the trip from the starting point.

5. A bridge 100 m long is to be built to span a valley. From A the angle of depression of
a point C is 40° and from B the angle of depression of C is 71°. If the supporting pier
is to be constructed at C, find its height, to the nearest metre.

6. A circular frame with a diameter of 6.0 m is secured with 5 bolts that are equally
spaced along the outer edge. Find the distance between 2 adjacent bolts, measured
from centre to centre.
