Science of Engineering Materials

Shafrin Sultana, Lecturer

Department of Electronics and
Communication Engineering, KUET
The science of engineering materials, also known as materials science or materials engineering, is a
multidisciplinary field that explores the structure, properties, synthesis, processing, and performance of materials. It
involves the study of crystallography, phase transformations, mechanical behavior, thermal properties,
electrical and magnetic properties, optical properties, surface properties, and more. The goal of materials
science is to understand the relationship between the atomic and molecular structure of materials and their
macroscopic properties, and to apply this knowledge to develop new materials with desired properties and
functionalities.

It enables the development of new materials with tailored properties and functionalities, leading to innovations in
various sectors and contributing to the progress of society.

• To offer theoretical background of solid-state physics that addresses the structure, processing,
and property of materials for engineering applications.
• To cover major areas of Crystallization, Crystal defects, Thermal properties of solids, Electrical
characteristics of materials, Magnetic properties of materials and Optical properties that
demonstrate light interaction with matter.

Solid-state physics is a branch of physics that focuses on the study of the physical properties and
behavior of atoms, electrons, and other particles in solids, particularly in their condensed phase, and the
interactions among them.

• In 1874, Karl Ferdinand Braun observed the rectifying
properties of a metal-semiconductor junction, laying the
foundation for the development of diodes.

• In 1904, John Ambrose Fleming invented the vacuum tube

diode, which utilized a heated cathode and an anode to control
the flow of current.

• In 1947, Invention transistor, a solid-state device, replaced

bulky vacuum tubes and enabled the miniaturization and
improved performance of electronic devices

• The 1960s saw the advent of integrated circuits (ICs), which

revolutionized electronics. ICs allowed multiple electronic
components, such as transistors, resistors, and capacitors, to be
fabricated on a single semiconductor chip.

• In 1970, MOS technology improved the performance and
efficiency of transistors and facilitated the creation of
microprocessors.

• The introduction of the microprocessor, notably the Intel 4004

in 1971, marked the birth of the modern computing era and laid
the foundation for the rapid advancement of personal computers.

• Over time, there has been a shift from germanium and early
silicon-based semiconductors to more advanced materials.

• In recent years, advancements in nanotechnology have

brought about new frontiers in semiconductor technology.. New
materials, such as graphene and carbon nanotubes, hold promise
for future semiconductor devices with unique properties and
performance.
