Subject – Science
(Set- B)

M.M. : 40
Time : 2 Hr.
Name : __________ Class : IX Roll No : ________ Date : ________

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. All questions are compulsory.
2. The question paper has four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C and Section D. There are 23
questions in the question paper.
3. Section–A has 9 questions of 1 mark each.
4. Section–B has 6 questions of 2 marks each.
5. Section–C has 5 questions of 3 marks each.
6. Section–D has 1 questions of 4 marks each.
7. There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions. A
student has to attempt only one of the alternatives in such questions.

SECTION-A

Select and write one most appropriate option out of the four options given for each of the
questions 1 – 9.

1. Which of the following is not a gas property? 1

a. Gases have definite shape
b. Gases have neither shape nor definite volume
c. The rate of diffusion in gases is higher
d. Gases particles are in a state of random motion
2. Choose the correct statement of the following: 1
a. Conversion of solid into vapour with passing through the liquid state called
“vaporisation”
b. Conversion of solid state into vapour without passing through the liquid state is called
“sublimation”
c. Conversion of vapours into solid without passing through the liquid state is called
“freezing”
d. Conversion of solid into liquid is called sublimation

3. Plasmolysis in a plant cell is defined as 1

(a) breakdown (lysis) of plasma membrane in hypotonic medium
(b) shrinkage of cytoplasm in hypertonic medium
(c) shrinkage of nucleoplasm
(d) none of them

4. The area under a speed–time graph represents a physical quantity which has the unit of 1

a. m b. m2 c. m s–1 d. m s–2

5. A bus starting from rest moves with uniform acceleration of 0.1 m/s2 for 2 minutes. The 1
distance covered by the bus is

a. 720 m. b. 620 m. c. 320 m. d. 520 m.

6. Which of the following are covered by a single membrane?
(a) Mitochondria
(b) Vacuole
(c) Lysosome
(d) Plastid

7. Assertion: Heat energy when supplied to the solid, it starts melting. 1

Reason: Solid particles take up the heat and helps in melting or fusion.

a. Both Assertion and Reason are true and Reason is the correct explanation of
Assertion.
b. Both Assertion and Reason are true but Reason is not the correct explanation of
Assertion.
c. Assertion is true but Reason is false.
d. Assertion is false but Reason is true.
8. Assertion : the speedometer of a car measures the instantaneous speed of the car. 1
Reason : Average speed is equal to the total distance covered by an object divided by the
total time taken.
9. Assertion : A cell membrane shows fluid behaviour. 1

Reason : A membrane is a mosaic of lipids and proteins.

SECTION-B

10. The mass per unit volume of a substance is called density (density = mass/volume). 2
Arrange the following in order of increasing density – air, exhaust from chimney, honey,
water, chalk, cotton and iron.

11. Provide the short statement on the following: 2

a. Kinetic Energy b. Compressibility
12. The velocity -time graph of a car is given below. The mass of the car is 1000 kg. 2

a. What is the distance travelled by the car is first 2 seconds?

b. What is retardation of the car during motion?

13. Differentiate between speed and velocity. 2

14. Why are lysosomes also known as “scavengers of the cells”? 2

15 Differentiate between rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum. 2

SECTION-C

16. Tabulate the difference in the characteristics of states of matter. Comment upon: 3
‘Arrangement of particles, force between particles, motion of particles, shape,
compressibility & expansion’ when heated.

17. Classification of matter on the basis of physical and chemical properties. 3

18. (i) Define acceleration and state its SI unit. 3

(ii) A train starts from rest and accelerate uniformly at the rate of 5 m/s2 for 5 sec.
Calculate the velocity of train in 5 sec.

19. (i) Define uniform circular motion. 3

(ii) A person moves along the boundary of a square field of side 10m in 20 sec. What will
be the magnitude of displacement of that person at the end of 2minutes 10 seconds?

20. How does an Amoeba obtain its food? 3

OR

Name the organelles which show the analogy written as under

(a) Transporting channels of the cell _______
(b) Power house of the cell _______
(c) Packaging and dispatching unit of the cell _______
SECTION-D

21. The endoplasmic reticulum is a large network of membrane-bound tubes and sheets. It 5
looks like long tubules or round or oblong bags (vesicles). The ER membrane is similar in
structure to the plasma membrane. The ribosomes, which are present in all active cells,
are the sites of protein manufacture. The manufactured proteins are then sent to various
places in the cell depending on need, using the ER.

a) Who discovered endoplasmic reticulum?

(i) Porter and Thompson
(ii) Robert Brown
(iii) Robert Hooke
(iv) Koshland
b) Endoplasmic reticulum membrane which is associated with ribosomes is
called_______
(i) ER lumen
(ii) Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
