SECTION 15300 – FIRE PROTECTION GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
1. GENERAL CONDITION
a. The General Condition Form a part of these specifications and contract.
b. The sub- contractor for the Fire Protection Works is designated as the Contractor in this
Division.

2. SCOPE OF WORS
a. Furnishing of all materials, labor, tools equipment and accessories for the complete
installation, testing and adjustment, ready for the use of the proposed automatic fire
sprinkler system.

b. The works essentially shall include, but shall not necessarily be limited to the following
items:
i. Supply and install complete automatic fire sprinkler system (AFSS) consisting of 150 mm
diameter supply fire lines, risers, feed mains, cross mains, branch line , riser nipples, pipe
droppings, fittings, valves, hangers, trims and its accessories required to complete the
system.
ii. Supply and install with all floor control valves, water flow switches, pressure gauges,
drain line stacks and drain valves assembly including termination/tapping of
monitoring supervisory wiring and conduit up to the fire alarm or electrical junction/
boxes and its accessories required to complete the system.

c. Supply and install complete with all inspector test connection, drain line stacks, pressure
gauges combination type inspector test valve with nozzle and its accessories required to
complete the system (on the farthest point of each system)

d. Supply and install complete with the sprinkler heads including spares and cabinet for
sprinkler system tools and stocks, trims and its accessories required to complete the system.

e. Supply and install complete and wet standpipe system(WSP) consisting of the fire hose
cabinet housing, fire hoses and pressure reducing / restricting angle valves including
installation of hand hose connection line and tapping to the Automatic Fire Sprinkler
System and its accessories required to complete the system.

f. Supply and install complete and dry standpipe system (DSP) consisting of 65mm diameter
fire hose valves and its accessories required to complete the system.

g. Supply and install complete with the dry standpipe system (DSP) and wet standpipe system
(WSP) fire department inlet and its accessories required to complete the system.

h. Supply and install complete with the portable fire extinguishing system consisting of
mounting support, bracket, trims and its accessories required to complete the system.

i. All the openings through which fire may spread from one floor to the other, such as holes
through floors made for the circuits shall be sealed with the fire resistant/ or fire stopping
materials.

j. Furnishing and installation of construction and identification boards, charts, signs and
markers, to include operating methods and instructions.

k. Priming and finish painting (red) of cladded and exposed piping and other part of sprinkler
system except for sprinkler heads.

l. Complete testing and commissioning, start-up of the entire Automatic Fire Sprinkler System
and Fire Protection System in accordance with NFPA-13, to include cleaning, draining,
adjusting and inspecting.

m. Miscellaneous items and other related materials required for the satisfactory completion of
sprinkler system to include metal works, hangers, supports, anchors, bolts, bracing and its
accessories.

n. Securing and payment of permits, licenses and bonds for the construction purposes,
including approval from the Fire Department having jurisdictions.

o. Contingency to include the furnishing of written one (1) year warranty upon completion
works of sprinkler system.

p. Preparation and submission of As-Built drawing in reproducible sheets including (2) white
prints copies at no cost to the owners.

q. Securing and payments of all contractors’ taxes VAT, etc.

3. WORK NOT INCLUDED


a. The following items of works will be supplied and done by others.
i. All cutting and patching shall be made by the general, contractor, except us a
specifically noted and modified herein.
ii. All electric power wirings, except that are furnished as an integral part of factory
assembled equipment, except us otherwise specified herein shall be by Electrical
Contractor.
iii. Supply and installation of fire doors shall be by General Contractor.
iv. Fire alarm and fire station for the alarm system shall be by Electrical Contractor.
v. Construction of the reinforced concrete water and fire storage reservoir shall be by
General Contractor.

4. APPLICABLE SPECIFICATION CODES, ORDINANCE, PERMITS AND FEES


a. The work covered in this contract is to be installed according to the specification, codes,
ordinances and requirements of the following:
i. Fire Code of the Philippines
ii. NFPA NO. 13 - Latest edition
iii. NFPA NO. 14 - latest edition
iv. NFPA NO. 20 - latest edition
v. RA - 8495 - Fire code of the Philippines
vi. National Plumbing Code of the Philippines.
vii. Fire Department Ordinances of concerned city and municipality.

b. All construction permit and fees required for the work shall be obtained by and at the
expense of the Contractor. The Contractor’s shall furnish the Architect. The Engineer and
the Owner final certificates of inspection and approval from the government authorities
having jurisdiction after the completion of the work.

c. The Contractor’s shall obtain all necessary allowances, pays, royalties, etc. In connection
with the use of any patented device or system and shall save the Owner harmless from any
claim or lawsuit arising from such use.

5. SHOP DRAWINGS, SAMPLES AND OTHER SUBMITTALS


a. The Contractor’s shall prepare and submit for the approval the following:
i. Dimensional layout of all pumping system, fire hose cabinet connections, etc.

ii. Manufacturer’s catalog, sheet’s, marked as necessary to indicate materials or


equipment being furnished for the following items:
1) Control and pump controllers
2) O.S. and Y gate valves, drain valves, gate, valves, water flow switches and flow
measuring device.
3) Mechanical grooved coupling and flexible connectors.
4) Fire Department connections (inlet and outlet), Siamese roof outlet, hose valves,
hose headers and hose cabinet,
5) Sprinkler heads, sprinkler wrench and spare cabinets
6) Riser supports and sleeves

iii. List of the miscellaneous materials proposed, including pipe, fittings, valves, etc. and
manhole accessories, identifying manufacturer and type.

b. Field test report


i. Such other similar information the Engineer may require.

6. SUBSTITUTION AND TESTING OF MATERIALS


a. Materials intended to be substituted for these originally specified shall be accepted only
after a formal request for the substitution, accompanied by:
i. Reason for the substitutions;
ii. Certificate of test indicating quality compared to those originally specified.
iii. Cost comparison of material originally specified. Request shall be submitted to the
architect/or Engineer subject for evaluation at least fifteen (15) working days before
installation of the subject material.

b. Cost of testing material, whether on originally specified items or on substitution, shall be to


the account of the contractor.

c. Result of test shall be submitted to the Architect/or Engineer for the Evaluation at least
fifteen (15) days before the materials is due for installation on the jobsite.

7. NOTES ON DRAWING
a. The Drawing shows the general arrangement of all piping’s. However, where local and /or
actual conditions at the jobsite necessitate a deviation or arrangement, the contractor’s
shall prepare and submit the new arrangement/ shop drawings for the Architect’s and /or
Engineer final approval.

b. Small scale drawings do not possibly indicate all offset, fitting and other parts of the system
required. The Contractor’s shall arrange such work accordingly, furnishing such

valves, hangers, supports, fittings, trims and its accessories as may be required to complete
the system in accordance to NFPA-13 Standard Installation of Sprinkler System.

8. WORKMANSHIP AND COORDINATION OF WORK OTHERS


a. The Contractor shall be held fully responsible for the work of any manufacturer or sub-
contractor supplying materials to or performing work for; as it is intended that the entire Fire
Protection System shall be ready in every respect for the satisfactory and efficient
operation when finally delivered to the Owners.

b. The Contractor shall assume full responsibility and shall provide the services of a qualified
Engineer to supervise the complete installations of equipment and to conduct the final
acceptance tests.

c. The work throughout shall be executed in the most through and satisfactory manner in
accordance with the best practices of the trade.

9. ACCEPTANCE TESTS
a. The contractor shall conduct test in the presence of inspector or authority having
jurisdiction of same, flushing or underground.

b. Isolated leak tests areas may be performed prior to installation of ceiling material in the
area to preclude any damage and during the total system final tests.

c. To remove foreign materials which may have entered the piping during installation of
same, flushing or underground connection is required before sprinkler piping is connected.

d. Hydrostatic Tests:
i. Minimum tests pressure shall not be less than to 200PSI on the system pressure.
Exceeding System pressure requirements to the minimum test pressure shall be tested
applying additional test pressure of 50PSIG on the system for at least twenty four (24)
minimum.
ii. No visible leakage for inside sprinkler piping will be allowed. Fore underground mains
and laid – ins, exceeding the permissible leakage or joints necessary repair shall be
made.
iii. All control valve water pressure to proper operating tests. Use clean, non-corrosive
water.
iv. Fire connection shall be tested.

e. The contractor shall furnish the Owner a written statement the effect that the work covered
by the contract has complete and tested, before requesting for final approval the
installation from the Fire Department Authority.
f. Testing of drainage facilities shall be made by opening main drain valve while the control
valve is wide open.
g. Test certificate shall be filled out and signed by the owner and contractor’s representative.

h. System operation and maintenance chart shall be submitted the Owner upon the
completion of the Contract. These shall include, among others, the location of the control
valves care of the new equipment.

10. MINOR MODIFICATION AND TIME COMPLETION
a. The plans as drawn should show conditions as accurately as is possible to indicate them in
scale. The plans diagrammatically and do not necessarily show all fitting etc. necessary to
fit the building conditions. The location of valves, fittings and the fixture shown on the plans
approximately. The contractor shall be responsible for proper location in order to make
them fir with architecture details and instructions.
b. The contractor shall complete the work herein described accordance with the specific
schedules set by the Owners accordance with General Contractor’s schedule of work.

11. GUARANTEE
a. The Contractor shall guarantee that the installed sprinkler system complies with the
requirements of the authorities and free from all defective workmanship and materials and
with inspection and acceptance of the work. Any defect appearing within one (1) year
shall be corrected by the Contractor at additional cost to the owner.

12. CONTRACTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY


a. The contractor’s shall provide temporary fire protection system during the construction
period. This shall be on sufficient capacity to put any fire that may break out due to
construction operation. This is in addition to temporary fire extinguisher required.

b. The Contractor’s shall identify and save the Owner, the Architect and the Consulting
Engineer Harmless from any against liabilities for damage property occasioned by any or
omission of this Contractor’s on any of this sub-contractors including any expenses, legal or
otherwise which may be insured by the Owner, the Architect or the Consulting Engineer, in
the defense of any claims, action or suits.

c. The General Contractor shall be responsible for the coordination among the different
trades on the jobsite in order to finish the works in the least possible time, in strict
compliance and in accordance with the plans and Specification.

d. Throughout the construction period open ends of all installed AFSS fire lines, cross mains,
branch lines riser nipples, drop nipples and other related piping’s shall be kept closed by
temporary plugs.

e. All installed AFSS, WET and DRY STANPIPE system risers, FCV and ITC drain line stacks and
other related piping’s shall not be used to conduct dirty construction wash water especially
those with cement mixes to avoid possible clogging.

f. A temporary potable water supply shall be made available to construction workers as


construction progresses

g. A temporary human excreta disposal system shall be provided by the contractor to serve
the Workers during the construction period.

PART – 1 GENERAL

1. SECTION INCLUDES

2. RELATED SECTIONS
a. Basic Mechanical Requirements as described in 15010 also apply to this Section.
b. Plumbing is described in 15400.

3. CODES AND STANDARDS


a. The work covered in this contract is to be installed according to the specification,
codes, ordinances and requirements of the following:
i. Fire Code of the Philippines
ii. NFPA NO. 13 - Latest edition
iii. NFPA NO. 14 - latest edition
iv. NFPA NO. 20 - latest edition
v. RA - 8495 - Fire code of the Philippines
vi. National Plumbing Code of the Philippines.

PART – 2

1. MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURERS


a. All materials shall be new, best of their respective grades, and as specified hereafter.
Use the same brand of manufacturer throughout for each class of material or
equipment.
b. The product names used herein are taken from the catalog of the manufacturers
named. Equipment equal in quality and utility may be accepted when submitted for
qualification.
i. When specific names are used, they are mentioned as standards, but this implies
no right to substitute other materials or methods without the Architect's/Engineer’s
approval. His decision shall govern. The burden of proof shall be upon the
Contractor.
ii. In those cases where comparable makers are used for all required modifications
and coordination between trades is the responsibility of the Contractor. Submit
drawings to show all modifications. Also, provide any other clarification drawings
and literature, if such is required in the judgment of the Architect.

2. SPRINKLER HEADS
a. Shall be 15 mm diameter for standard coverage and 20 mm diameter for extended
coverage orifice with 5mm diameter glass bulb type spray sprinkle for all upright,
pendent or sidewall sprinkle heads. Pendent heads (recessed type) and side wall

shall be providing with aluminum escutcheon or approved equivalent to fit into ceiling
boards or ceiling runners. Flush or concealed type pendent units shall be accepted as
substitute. Heads shall be UL Inc. approved of one brand all throughout similar to
“GLOBE”,”TYCO CENTRAL” brand or approved equal and/or shall be standard product
of a reputable manufacturer.

3. FIRE HOSE CABINETS


a. Fire hose valve and cabinets assembly as shall be UL listed and FM approved similar to
“CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”, “GIACOMINI” brand or approved equal and to match
Integrated Metropolitan Fire Department requirements/ or Bureau of Fire Protection.
i. Hose - 40 mm diameter x 30.00 meter double jacketed rubber lined finish “INDIAN
RAYON” brand or equal
ii. Nozzle - combination fog and solid stream, 40mm diameter chrome plated.

ordinary Angle valve for upstream working pressure below 100 PSI.
v. Hose Nipple - for components, Shall be chrome plated. Provide two (2) universal
spannel wrenches.
vi. Cabinet - shall be locally manufactured full flushed mounting door with anodized
cal- colored aluminum for all glass plate, frame and box shall be No. 18 gauge steel
with white interior baked enamel finishes over primer. Cabinet size shall contain the
above components.

4. FIRE DEPARTMENT CONNECTION (INLET)


a. Shall be UL listed flushed wall mounted (sidewalk connection) for Dry standpipe system
complete with cap/plugs and chains, plates lettered with “Automatic Sprinkler
Standpipe” and “Dry Standpipe” similar to “CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”, “POWHATAN” brand
or approved equal and to match local Bureau of Fire Protection.

i. Three way outlet connections three (3) way 65mm diameter x 65 mm diameter x
65mm diameter x 150mm diameter. For Dry Standpipe.
ii. Three way outlet connection three (3) way 65mm diameter x 65mm diameter x
65mm diameter x 150mm diameter. For AFSS Upfeed System.
iii. Polished Brass rectangular identification plates
iv. Polished brass, double female snoots, pin lugs, and chains.
v. Shall be female snoots and NPT x pin lug hose thread swivels and provided with pin
lug plugs and chains connections.

5. TESTING HOSE HEADER (OUTLET)


a. Shall be flushed wall mounted (sidewalk connection) provided with valves, caps and
chains plates lettered with “Pump Test Connection” similar to “CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”,
“POWHATAN” brand or approved equal and to match Integrated Metropolitan Fire
Department requirements/ or Bureau of Fire Protection.
i. Three way hose outlet connection; three (3) way 65 mm diameter x 65mm diameter x
65mm diameter x 150mm diameter.
ii. Finish - Cast brass body with back inlet
- Brass rectangular identification plates
- Cast brass valves with red hand-wheel
- Polished brass caps and chains.

b. Shall be female NPT inlet x male hose thread outlet provided with caps and chains.

6. WALL HYDRANTS (FIRE HOSE VALVES)


a. Shall be UL listed straight globe female x male assembly similar to
“CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”, “POWHATAN” brand provide with valves, caps and chains or
approved equal and to match Integrated Metropolitan Fire Department
requirements/ or Bureau of fire Protection.
i. Type - Single outlet connection 65 mm diameter x 150 mm diameter.
ii. Finish - Cast brass valve with red hand-wheel
iii. Polished brass caps and chains.

b. Shall be female NPT inlet x male hose thread outlet provided with caps and chains.

7. ROOF MANIFOLD (OUTLET)


a. Shall be UL listed flushed parapet wall mounted back inlet body, provided with the
valves, caps, chains and provided with round identification plates similar to
“CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”, “POWHATAN” brand or approved equal to match Integrated
Metropolitan Fire Department requirements/or bureau of Fire Protection.
i. Type - Double (twin) roof outlet manifolds; two (2) way 65 mm diameter x 65 mm
diameter x 150 mm diameter.
ii. Finish - Cast brass body back inlet
iii. Cast brass valve with red hand-wheel
iv. Polished brass caps and chains.
v. Brass round identification plates.

b. Shall be female NPT inlet and male NPT twin outlets for body and to match female
NPT inlet and male hose thread outlet for valves and provided with caps and chains.

8. PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

a. Furnish and install as indicate on the drawing. Units shall be approved by the Fire
Department having jurisdiction and UL listed. Similar to “Badger”, ”Kiddie” brand or
approved and equal to match Integrated Metropolitan fire Department
requirements/or Bureau of fire Protection. Mounting shall be inside fire hose cabinets
and as shown on Drawings.

b. Types and quantity of portable fire extinguisher shall ba as per final approval and
recommendation of Local Fire Department having jurisdiction.

c. A metal name plate indicating indelible letters of the correct specification and/or
standard catalog product of the Portable Fire Extinguisher and the reputable
manufacturer brand name and UL Listing shall be properly attached to the assembly at
location such that the information written thereon can be conveniently read by all
concerned.

9. FIRE PROTECTION PIPING


a. Where American standards are specified, other approved national or local standards
may be acceptable, provided copies of these standard Specification are forwarded
to the Engineer for his written approval.

b. Black iron, schedule 40 standards, conforming to ASTM A-53 for pipe size 150 mm
diameter and above only (wet and dry).

c. Black iron, schedule 40 pipes, standard, conforming to ASTM A-53 for inside building
installations (feed mains, cross mans and branch lines).

d. All side piping shall be installed by means of screwed or flanged fittings. Flanged joint
shall be used at all sprinkler riser and provided with 1.6 mm thick long fiber asbestos,
cross laminated gasket “cranite”.

e. Torch cutting shall not be permitted as means of modifying or repairing sprinkler


system.

f. All welding shall be “shop welding” only and shall be done by electric arc welding
process.

10. FIRE PROTECTION FITTING


a. Sprinkler system fitting shall be extra heavy pattern. Whenever a change in pipe size is
made, one piece of reducing fitting all shall be used. Provide mechanical grooved
couplings at riser pipes of every floor.

b. All fittings shall be of malleable iron fittings.

c. Steel pipe flange mating with steel equipment flange shall have the same facing as
mating flange.

d. Screwed union shall not be used on pipes larger than 50mm (2”). Coupling and unions
of pipes other than screwed type shall be of types approved specifically for sprinkler.

11. FIRE PROTECTION VALVES


a. All valves shall be of the same manufacture for each class of piping and such as
possible, for the entire Project similar to ”CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”,”KENEDY” brand or
approved equal. Valves shall permanently bear affixed stamp or tag indicating
manufacturer catalog number, pressure and temperature ratings of isolation gate
valve, OS & Y gate valves, angle valves, check valves, fire alarm check valve,
pressure, relief valves with all cast iron body with bronze trim.

b. Furnish all valves and accessories material necessary for piping not shown on drawings
as follows :
i. Vents and drains for equipment to which piping connections are made.
ii. Connection to metering instrument and controls including pressure gauges,
thermometer, controller’s traps and appurtenances required for proper functioning
on instrument in controls.
iii. Temporary valves and accessories required for placing equipment into initial service.

iv. Piping 50 mm (2”) and smaller required for proper operation of piping system and
equipment, including drain valves required to drain all low points in piping.
v. Valve seats shall be renewable except for forged steel and high pressure cast steel
valves where Manufacturer’s standard is integral seats.
vi. All valves shall be approved by Factory Manual and Underwriters laboratories, Inc.
(UL) in accordance with ANSI B 16.1, class 125.

vii. Where required and not noted, provided chain – wheel operators, extending chain
for chain operated valves to which 1.2 meters of nearest floor or operating platform
of valves.
viii. Provide floor stand with flanged faces for bolting to floor or platforms and other
special devices where specified or noted on drawings.
ix. Provide extension stems, universal joints stem guide bearings and other accessories
required to locate floor stands in convenient location with interference with other
equipment, piping or building parts.
x. Floor control valves within the building shall be approved indicating wedge gate
with electrical contact and which will open when valve is partially or totally put in
close position.

12. SWAY BRACES, HANERS, SUPPORTS AND SEISMIC BRACING

a. Sway Bracing - Steel flat bars, structural grade 7 mm minimum thickness, with corrosion
protection; shape /or type as shown on plans.
i. Sway Bracing Installation;
1) Adequate sway bracing shall be provided to oppose longitudinal or transverse
pipe movements.
2) Lateral bracing shall withstand a force equal to 50% of the weight of the water
contained in piping, valve and fittings. Spacing shall be 40 ft. (12m) maximum
distances along main lines.
3) Longitudinal bracing shall with stand a force equal to 50% of the weight of cross
main and feed main within the zone of water contained in piping, valves and
fittings. Spacing shall be 80 ft. (24m) maximum distances along main lines.

b. Piping anchorages shall not be secured on two (2) dissimilar parts of the building which
will move differently.
i. Pipe hangers - Steel flat bars, structural grade, 7 mm minimum thickness, with
corrosion protection, shape as shown on plans.

1) Hangers Installation
a) Approved inserts may be used for the support of hangers, anchorages in
concrete. Expansion shield should be used in a horizontal position on the
sides of concrete beams and shall be above the bottom reinforcement.
b) Increaser couplings shall be attached immediately adjacent to the
expansion shields.

c) When pipes 100 mm diameter and larger are supported in the vertical
position, the support shall be at a minimum spacing of 3.0 meters (10’) on
center. Holes in concrete for expansion shield shall be made of the [roper
size and depth, as specified for the type of shield used, to provide a uniform
contact with the shield over its entire length and circumference.

d) Maximum distance between hangers shall be 3.65 meters (12’) for size mm
(1”). Provide at least one hanger for each length of branch line, one
between each two cross main branches, one hanger for each 4.75 meters
(15’) length of feed mains. The distance between the hanger and the
center line of upright sprinkler shall be not less than 76 mm (3”).

e) Support on Risers (Four Way Bracing) - Risers shall be adequately supported


either by attachments directly to the riser or by hanger located on the
horizontal connection close to the risers. Support shall be provided at the
ground level and at each every second floor level and at the top most level
of the riser.

f) Seismic Separation Bracing - Seismic separation assembly shall provide at


every piping crosses at very construction joints of the building separation
assembly shall composed of fittings, pipe and approved Victaulic coupling
that permits movement in all directions and sufficient to withstand
differential motion during earthquake. For nominal 4”diameter (mm
diameter) and above sizes of pipes the separation distances shall not
exceed 8 inches (203 m) maximum. For other separation distances and pipe
sizes, length and distances should be modified proportionally.

13. PIPES SLEEVES

a. MATERIALS
i. Through Fittings - cast iron
ii. Below Grade - cast iron or standard weight iron pipe
iii. Above Grade - Steel pipe

b. INSTALLATION
i. Minimum clearance between the pipe & sleeve shall not be less than 25 mm (1”)
for pipes, 25 mm (1”) to 89 mm (3-1/2”) and 50 mm (2”) clearance between pipes
100 mm(4”) and larger. The clearance between pipes and sleeves shall be filled
with non – combustible flexible materials such as asbestos rope and furnished with
semi – hardening mastic flush.
ii. Floor sleeves shall extended at least 76 mm (3”) above the top of the wearing
surface.
iii. Drains, fire department connections, test manifolds and other auxiliary pipings
connected to rises shall not be cemented into walls or floors.

14. FIRESTOPPING MATERIALS

a. MATERIALS
i. Fire stop compounds and damning material shall be UL listed and shall conform to
the requirements of qualified designer or manufacturers approved modifications,
as supported by engineering reports. Similar to “Hilti”, “Metacaulk” brand or
approved equal.
ii. The penetration seal materials must be unaffected by moisture and must maintain
the integrity of the wall or floor assembly for its rated time period when tested in
accordance with ASTM E814 (UL 1479). The system shall be UL listed classified for up
to and including three (3) hours.
iii. Fire stopping materials shall be asbestos and lead free and shall not incorporate oil
not require the use of hazardous solvents.
iv. All fire stopping materials shall be manufactured by one manufacturer thru out the
completion of the project.
v. Do not proceed with installation of fire stop materials when temperatures exceed
the manufacturer recommendation limitation for installation.

b. PREPARATIONS
i. Clean substrate of dirt, dust, grease, oil, loose materials, rust or other matter that
may affect proper fittings or adhesion of the fire stopping materials.
ii. Clean metal and glass surfaces with a non-alcohol solvent.

c. INSTALLATION
i. Installation of fire stops shall be performed by an applicator / installer qualified and
trained by the manufacturer. Installation is performed in strict accordance with
manufacturer’s detail installation procedure.
ii. Apply fire stops in accordance with fire test reports, fire resistance requirements,
acceptable sample installation and Manufacturer’s recommendations.
iii. Unless specified and approved all insulation used in conjunction with through
penetration shall remain intact and undamaged and may not be removed.
iv. Seal holes and penetrations to ensure an effective smoke seal.
v. In areas of high traffic, protect fire stopping materials from damaged. If the
opening is large, install fire stopping materials capable of supporting the weight of
human load.
vi. Insulation types specified in other section shall not be installed in lieu of fire
stopping materials specified herein.
vii. All combustible penetrants (e.g. non-metallic or insulated metallic pipes) shall
have fire stopping using products and tested in a configuration representative of
the field condition.
viii. When required to properly contain fire stopping materials within opening, damning
or packing materials may utilized. Combustible damning material must be move
after appropriate curing. Non-combustible damning components of the fire stop
system.

d. CLEANING
i. Removed spilled and excess materials adjacent to fire stopping without damaging
adjacent surface.
ii. Leave finished work in neat, clean condition with on evidence of spillovers or
damage to adjacent surfaces.

15. PIPE PAINTING


a. Sprinkler heads, valve stems and the like shall not be painted.
b. After installation and test and before the installation of ceiling fixtures or boards, all
piping’s shall be prime painted and coated with two coats of gloss red quick drying
enamel.

16. ALARM CHECK VALVES ASSEMBLY (WET TYPE)


a. The alarm check valve assemblies and its components shall be UL listed so constructed
and installed similar to “BEST”, “CENTRAL” brand or approved equal and to match
Integrated Metropolitan Fire Department requirements/or Bureau of Fire Protection. That
any flow of water from the sprinkler system equal to or greater than from a single
automatic sprinkler head, will result in an audible and visual alarm bells whether water or
electrically actuated shall be capable of being actuated both automatically and
manually.

b. The water-actuated alarm check valve assembly shall be complete with all the
necessary attachments required to give an alarm and ease in maintenance.
The gong shall be installed as indicate in the plans. The check alarm check valve shall
consist of but not limited to the following:

17. SUPERVISORY FLOOR CONTROL VALVES ASSEMBLY


a. Water Flow Switches
i. Flow alarm valves shall be UL listed similar to “SYSTEM SENSOR” brand or approved
equal and to match Integrated Metropolitan Fire Department requirements/or
Bureau of Fire Protection. Sizes indicated on the plans shall be provided with two
(2) numbers electrical contacts that will close instantaneously with steady flow of
water in the pipe and shall be complete with tamperproof terminal chamber with
minimum ½” diameter conduit. False alarm shall be prevented by an adjustable
pneumatic device to retard the flow of shall be actuated only by an in directional
flow of water. Electrical connections from these valves shall be done by the
Electrical/or fire alarm contractors.
ii. The alarm apparatus shall substantially supported, located and installed so that all
parts shall be readily accessible for inspection, removal and repair.
iii. An actual water flow, through the use of the test connection, shall be employed to
test the operation of the sprinkler alarm units in each floor or as a whole.

b. O.S. and Y gate / Control Valve


i. Floor Control Valve- shall be UL listed and FM approved similar to
“CENTRAL/SPRAYSAFE”, “KENEDY” brand or approved equal. Control valve shall be
rising stem O.S. and Y resilient seat valves with accordance with ANSI B 16.1, class
125. Provide with tamper alarm switch for the supervisory signal indicating
unauthorized closing and tampering of the isolation valves.

18. ALARM SUPERVISORY SYSTEM


a. The supervisory and alarm system shall be integrated with the building Fire Alarm System.
The Fire alarm System annunciator shall indicate the flow valve supervisory switches.

19. MARKERS INSTRUCTION AND IDENTIFICATION SIGNBOARD


a. Shall be made of gauge no. 14 black iron sheet with baked enamel finish and letter
instruction as shown on the plans. Additional signboards shall be mounted on the
unobstructed area for easy identification reading. Paints shall be basically gloss fire red
and white.

20. PUMPS

a. GENERAL
i. Manufacturer’s installation drawing shall be submitted together with the proposal.
After installation is completed as “as-installed” drawings showing all the field revision
and exact location/dimension on reproducible form plus two (2) white print copies
shall be submitted to the owners at the Contractor’s Expense.

ii. Pump performance curves shall be submitted together with the proposal. The pump
efficiencies at various workloads shall be indicated thereon and properly marked.

iii. Test run shall be performed by the supplier after the installation is completed, to
demonstrate conformity to the manufacturer’s specification. A successful test shall be
a condition to the owner acceptance of the installed equipment and to final
payment.
iv. A direct statement on the availability of spare parts and maintenance service from
pump supplier, for a period of at least three (3) years reckoned from the date of the
acceptance test shall be submitted.

b. FIRE PUMPS
i. The pumps shall be electric motor driven fire pump, all control and necessary
attachments specified herein shall be UL listed and FM engineering approved and
shall be furnished under their contract. The pump shall be capable of delivering not
less than 150 percent of rated capacity at not less than 65 percent of total heads.
The shut-off head shall not exceed 120 percent of rated heads. The fire pump shall be
vertical turbine type with accessories to include circuit breakers, starters and
controllers.

ii. Electric Motor Driven - The pump shall be electric motor drive, all control and
necessary attachments specified herein shall be UL listed and FM engineering
approved and shall be furnished under their contract. The pump shall be capable of
delivering not less than 150 percent of total head. The shut-off head shall not exceed
120 percent of rated heads. The fire pump shall be vertical turbine type with
accessories to include circuit breakers, starters & controllers.

iii. Up-feed system


1) Fire pump @ Ground (fire storage water tank) volumetric capacity shall be 750
GPM vs FT. TDH (125 PSIG), approx. 100HP. (Refer to Equipment Schedule)

2) Flow element shall be familiar to Universal Venture Type and the flow indicator
shall be similar to well type.
3) Mercury manometer. Model shall be similar to aurora Fire Pump Flow Metering
Devices Model GB.

vi. Installation Drawing:


1) Manufacturer’s installation drawing shall be submitted as part of Shop Drawings, as
part of the specification.

vii. Performance Curves:


1) Performance curves shall be submitted together with the requirements as part of the
specification. The pump efficiencies at various workloads shall be indicated thereon
and properly marked.

1) This contractor shall assume unit responsibility and shall provide the services of the
qualified Engineer to supervise the complete installation of equipment who shall be
available conducting the final acceptance test as stated in the specification.

ix. Flow Measuring Device


1) Fire pump shall be acquired also with “Flow Measuring Device” consisting of
flow meter and flow indicator.
2) Flow element shall be similar to Universal Venture type and the flow indicator
shall be similar to well type Mercury Manometer. Model shall be similar to
Aurora Pump Flow Metering Device Model GB.

x. Installation Drawings

part of the Specification.

available conducting the final acceptance test as stated under the specification.

c. JOCKEY PUMPS:
i. The pumps shall be electric motor drive, all control and necessary attachments
specified herein shall be UL listed and FM engineering approved and shall be
furnished under their contract. The pump shall be capable of delivering not less than
150 percent horizontal centrifugal, end- suction/ or vertical in line with accessories to
include, circuit breakers, starters and controllers.

1) Up-feed
2) No. of units: One (1) unit
a. Jockey Pump @ basement-3 (fire storage water tank level 1) volumetric
capacity shall be 40 GPM (min.) vs 288 FT. TDH (125 PSIG), approx. 7.5 HP,
each. (Refer to Equipment Schedule)
b. Jockey Pump Control Panels: Furnish ready for writing jockey pump, General
Electric CRI 35 type “F” with” HO-Automatic switch and timer run relays, with
three overload relays, “Joslyn Clark Controller, “Cutler Hammer”, “Firetrol” or as
approved.

d. SPARE PARTS
i. Furnish spare parts and maintenance service parts lists for a period of at least one
(1) year reckoned form the date after termination warranty as indicated in in
Specification.

1) MOTORS - General Requirements

1) Motor types required for project: Refer to other parts of specification.


2) Motor shall be furnished with driven equipment to assure proper coordination of
motor and control characteristic of requirements.
3) Horsepower: nameplate shall be at least as great as the break horse power
required to drive the equipment under the maximum specified conditions without
consideration of service factor.
4) Conform to NEMA Standard No. MGI entitled “Motor and Generator” except
where specifically noted otherwise.
5) Conform to ANSI standard No. C50, 2-195 Alternating-Current Induction motors,
Induction Machine is in General and Universal Motors.
6) Torque and speed characteristics; suited to requirement of driven equipment,
including gear reducers specified.
7) Maximum speed; 3500 rpm unless specified otherwise
8) Horsepower:

- Motor HP rating specified shall be nameplate rating without consideration


of motor service factor.
- Nameplate HP not less than HP required by driven equipment operated at
maximum condition specified.

voltage in accordance with manufacturer’s standard for horsepower and speed
required.

ii. Enclosures ad Insulation:


1) Suitable for 40 degree C ambient duty, with standard service factor, unless otherwise
specified.
2) Drip-proof encapsulated moisture sealed insulation system, with whether resistant
conduit box: bearing shielded against entrance of moisture & dirt; & anti-corrosion
treatment of exposed metal parts, degree C ambient continuous duty, with 1.15
(min.) service factors.
3) Totally enclosed non – ventilated of fan-cooled; 4 degree C ambient, continuous
duty, with 1.15 (min. service factor.

satisfactory for proposed installation.

iii. Types:
1) Single- phase induction; method of starting suited to driven load requirements;
constant or multi – speed, and method of starting as specified.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

1. PREPARATION
a. Examine all surfaces which is to support or receive parts place and subsequent
construction. Notify General Contractor if any condition exists which will prevent the
completion of the Work in this Section in a satisfactory manner. Application or
installation of materials constitutes acceptance of the supporting and adjoining
construction.

2. COORDINATION
a. The location of major supply mains, Siamese fittings, etc., are shown and located on
the Drawings.
b. Installation of the wet automatic sprinkler system shall be coordinated, by the Fire

Protection Contractor, with the immediate and related mechanical and electrical
installations and all other trades involved in other parts of the Work for the proper
location and installation of sprinkler heads, piping, outlets and equipment before
installation of same.

3. INSTALLATION
a. Install the wet automatic sprinkler system in strict accordance with the approved
drawings and each manufacturer's requirements where required, and as applicable
an automatic fire alarm system.
b. The connection between the system piping and fire pumps piping shall be made with a
suitable transition piece and shall be properly strapped or fastened with approved
devices.
c. All sprinklers pipe and fittings shall be so installed that the system may be drained.
d. On wet pipe systems, sprinkler pipes may be installed level and trapped piping shall be
drained.
e. Drainage for the system or main shall be installed so as to properly drain all of the
system as follows:
i. On all risers 6 in. (150 mm) or larger, provide 3 in (80 mm) drain pipes and valves.
ii. On risers 2½ in. (65mm) to 3½ in. inclusive, provide drain pipes and valves not smaller
than 1¼ in. (32mm)
iii. On smaller risers, provide drain pipes and valves not smaller than ¾ in. (20mm).

f. Auxiliary drains shall be provided when a change in piping direction prevents drainage
of sections of branch lines or mains through the main valve.
i. Auxiliary drains not required for piping to a single sprinkler head on wet pipe system.
ii. Auxiliary drains on trapped sections of wet pipe system shall be a minimum of 1 in. in
size (25 mm).
1) When a capacity of trapped sections of pipe is five (5) gallons (20 L) or less, auxiliary
drain shall consist of a 1 in. (25mm) nipple and cap or brass plug.
2) When capacity of trapped sections of pipe is more than five (5) gallons (20 L), the
auxiliary drain shall consist of a 1 in. (25mm) valve complete with nipple and cap or
brass plug.

g. Direct interconnections shall not be made between sewers and sprinkler drains of
systems supplied by public water.
i. Drain discharge shall be in conformity with any health or water department
requirements.
ii. Approved corrosive resistant pipe shall be used where drain pipes are buried
underground.
iii. Drain pipes shall not terminate in blind spaces under the building.
iv. Drain pipes, when exposed, shall be fitted with a turned down elbow.
v. Drain pipes shall be arranged as not to expose any part of the sprinkler system to
freezing conditions.

h. The sprinkler systems shall be protected, where applicable, to minimize or to prevent


pipe breakage where subject to earthquakes as follows:
i. Mechanical grooved couplings shall be provided:
1) Within 24 in. (600 mm) of the top and bottom of all risers except as modified in "b".

2) For risers or drops 2½ in. (65mm) or larger and 3 ft. (0.90 m) to 7 ft. (2.13m) in
length, one (1) mechanical groove coupling is adequate.
3) Sleeves shall be provided around all piping extending through the walls, floors,

platforms and foundations:


a) Minimum clearance between the pipe and sleeve shall not be less than 1 in.
(25mm) for pipes 1 in. (25mm) through 3 in. (80mm) and 2 in. (50mm) for pipe
size 4 in. (100mm) and larger.
b) The clearance between pipe and sleeve shall be filled with non-combustible
flexible material such as mineral wool, fiberglass or equivalent.

ii. Sway bracing shall be provided:


1) Feed and cross mains shall be braced to withstand a force under tension or
compression equal to fifty percent (50%) of the weight of water filled piping,
utilizing a two-way sway brace in 2½ in. (65 mm) and larger pipe. Top of risers shall
be secured against drifting in any direction utilizing a four-way sway brace.
2) Where "U" hook hangers are used on branch lines, the pipe shall be secured to
the end hanger by a wrap-around-type "U" hook.
3) U-type hangers used to support a system will satisfy most of the requirements for
sway bracing except that, in general, a longitudinal hanger shall also be required
for 2½ in. (65 mm) and larger piping.
4) When feed and cross-mains are hung with single rods longer than 6 in., sway
bracing shall be provided.
5) Sway bracing shall be attached directly to the feed and cross-mains only.
6) Fastening of piping to sections, which will move differently, such as a wall and a
roof, is prohibited.
7) The latest piece of pipe at the end of a feed or cross main shall be provided with
a transverse brace.
8) Transverse braces may also act as longitudinal braces if they are within 24 in. (600
mm) of the centerline of the piping braced longitudinally.

iii. Pipe, tube or fittings shall be joined by the following means:


1) Threaded Pipe and Fittings:
2) All threaded pipe and fittings shall have threads cut to ANSI Standards B2.1. Care
shall be taken that the pipe does not extend into the fitting sufficiently to reduce
the waterway.
3) Pipe shall be reamed after cutting to remove all burrs and fins.
4) Joint compound or tape shall be applied to the threads of the pipe and not in
the fitting.

i. Welding Pipe:
i. Sections of branch lines, cross mains, feed mains or risers may be shop welded.
ii. Sections of welded piping shall be joined by means of screwed flange or flexible
gasket joints or other approved fittings.
iii. Torch cutting shall not be permitted as a means of modifying or repairing sprinkler
systems.
iv. Welding shall be done in accordance with the methods set forth hereinbefore.
v. Welders shall be certified as specified hereinbefore.
vi. When welded fittings are used to form outlets:
1) Holes in piping shall be cut to the full diameter of the fitting.
2) Discs shall be retrieved.
3) Openings in piping shall be made smooth.
4) All slag and other welding residue shall be removed.

j. Cut groove:
i. Steel pipe may be joined with mechanical groove couplings approved for service

with grooves cut in pipe by an approved grooving machine.


ii. Sprinkler piping shall be substantially supported from the building structure which must
support the added load of the water-filled pipe plus a minimum of 250 lbs. (114 kg)
applied at the point of hanging.
1) Types of hangers and installation methods shall be in accordance with and
conform to the latest edition of NFPA No.13, unless they are certified by a
professional registered engineer for the following:
a) Designed to support five (5) times the weight of the water-filled pipe plus 250
lbs. (114 kg) at each point of piping support.
b) These points of support are enough to support the sprinkler system.
c) Ferrous materials are used for hanger components.
d) Detailed calculations shall be submitted, when required by the reviewing
authority, showing the following:
- Stresses developed both in hangers and piping.
- Safety factors allowed.

2) Sprinkler piping shall be supported independently of the ceiling sheathing, except


as follows:
a) Toggle hangers may be used only for the support of branch lines under
ceilings of hollow tile or metal lath and plaster.

3) When sprinkler piping is installed below ductwork, piping shall be substantially


supported from the building structure or from steel angles supporting the
ductwork provided the angles conform to the requirements of the latest edition
of NFPA No.13.
4) The components of hanger’s assemblies which directly attach to the pipe or to
the building structure, except for mild steel hangers formed from rod, shall be
listed.
5) For trapeze hangers, the minimum size of steel angle or pipe span between
purlins or joints shall be as specified in the latest edition of NFPA No.13.
a) All angles shall be used with longer leg vertical.
b) Any other sizes or shapes giving equal or greater section modulus will be
acceptable.
c) The trapeze bar shall be secured to prevent slip page.

6) The size of hanger rods and fasteners required to support the steel angle iron or
pipe shall be as specified in the latest edition of NFPA No.13.
7) Eye rods and ring hangers shall be secured with the necessary lock washers to
prevent lateral motion at the point of support.

k. Screwed unions shall not be used on pipe larger than 2 inch. Couplings and unions of
other than screwed type shall be of the types approved specifically for use in wet
automatic sprinkler systems. Unions, screwed or flexible gasket couplings or flanges may
be used to facilitate installations.

l. Use one-piece reducing fittings wherever a change is made in the size of the pipe,
except hexagonal or face bushings may be used in reducing the size of openings of
fittings when standard fittings of the required size are not available.

m. Install approved indicating valves on connections to water supplies and in supply pipes
to sprinklers unless a non-indicating valve, such as an underground gate valve with an
approved roadway box complete with T-wrench, is accepted by the

authority having jurisdiction. Such valves shall not close in less than five (5) seconds
when operated at a maximum possible speed from the normally open position. This is
to avoid damage to piping by water hammer.

i. The following may not incorporate indicating devices as part of the valve, but the
valve assembly described shall qualify as an approved indicating valve.
1) An underground gate valve of approved type equipped with an approved
indicator post.
2) An approved water control valve assembly, which is normally open and requires
constant energy application to close and keep closed.
3) An approved water control valve assembly, which has a reliable position
indication, connected to a remote supervisory station.
ii. Check valves shall be of an approved type and may be installed in a vertical or
horizontal position.

n. Install an approved indicating valve in the system so located as to control all sources of
water supply, except fire department connection.
o. The fire department connection shall be made on the system side of a check valve in
the water supply piping.
i. The connection shall be made on the system side of the approved indicating, check
and alarm valves to the riser, unless the sprinklers are supplied by fire department
pumper connection in the yard.
ii. On systems with two (2) or more risers, the connection shall be made on the system
side of all shutoff valves controlling other water supplies, but on the supply side of the
riser, shutoff valves so that with any one (1) riser off, the connection will feed the
remaining sprinklers, unless the sprinklers are supplied by fire department pumper
connections in the yard.

p. Provide an approved check valve in the line to the fire department connection
located as near as practicable to the point where it joins the system.
i. There shall be no shutoff valve in the fire department connection.
ii. The piping between the check valve and the outside hose connection shall be
equipped with an approved automatic ball drip and a drain line to the floor drain.

q. A pressure gage shall be installed on the riser or main feed, at or near each test pipe,
with a connection not smaller than ¼ in. This gage connection shall be equipped with
a shutoff valve and with provisions for draining.
i. Gages shall be installed to permit removal.
ii. Gages shall be located where they shall not be subjected to freezing.

r. Water-motor gong shall be located as near as practicable to the alarm valve or other
water flow detecting device.
i. The total length of the pipe to these devices shall not exceed 75 ft.
ii. The device shall be so located and installed that all parts are accessible for
inspection, removal and repair and should be substantially supported.
iii. Do not install the water-motor gong over 20 feet above the alarm device.
iv. All piping to these devices shall be galvanized or brass or other approved corrosion
resistant material of a size not less than ¾ in.
1) All piping shall be protected from the weather.
v. Drains from alarm devices shall be so arranged that there will be no freezing and no
overflowing of the alarm apparatus at domestic connections or elsewhere with the
sprinkler drains wide open and under system pressure.

s. Test pipes, which may also be used as drain pipes, shall be provided locations that will
permit flowing tests to be made to determine whether water supplies and connections
are in order.
i. Such test pipes shall be equipped with a shutoff valve. Test pipes shall be installed
that the valves may be opened wide for a sufficient time to assure a proper test
without causing water damage to the building.

t. Provide all control, drain and test valves with approved identification signs permanently
attached to the identified device.
i. Provide approved identification signs for all outside alarm devices. The sign shall be
located near the device in a conspicuous position.

u. Install sprinkler head wall mounted cabinet with required spares in the Mechanical
Room in an accessible area as close as possible to the main riser.

v. Install the automatic fire alarm system, where applicable, including all electrically
operated alarm detachments and wiring forming part of an auxiliary, central station,
proprietary or remote station signaling system in accordance with the latest editions of
NFPA No.71, 72, 74 and 1221 and all other applicable NFPA pamphlets.
i. An automatic fire alarm is required to have remote station signaling and requires
connection to the Owner's telephone service; it shall be connected by the installing
contractor, to the telephone equipment connection block supplied by others as
specified.
ii. Water flow detector shall be UL listed, FM approved Water flow detecting devices,
including the associated alarm circuits, shall be tested by an actual water flow
through use of a test connection.
iii. Outdoor electric alarm devices shall be of a type specifically listed for outdoor use
and the outdoor wiring shall be in approved conduit, properly protected from the
entrance of water.

4. PAINTING
i. Paint sprinkler piping as shown on the Drawings and as specified.
1) Care shall be exercised whenever the sprinkler piping is given any kind of coating
to ensure that no automatic sprinkler surfaces are coated.
2) Automatic sprinklers shall not be painted and any sprinklers which have been
coated, except for factory applied coatings, shall be replaced with new listed
sprinklers.

5. CLEANING
i. Swab-out lines and/or flush out system with fresh water until they are clean and water
runs clear at all outlets.

6. ACCEPTANCE TESTS
i. Prior to requesting final approval of the automatic sprinkler equipment and system by the
local regulating authority having jurisdiction, the installing contractor shall furnish a written
statement, with copies to the General Contractor and the Owner, to the effect that the
Work covered by its contract has been completed and tested in accordance with the
approved specifications and plans.
ii. All tests required shall be performed by the installing contractor.
1) When the local regulating authority representative having jurisdiction desires to
be present during the conduct of tests, the installing contractor shall give the

authority having jurisdiction advance notification of time test will be performed.


2) When the local regulating authority representative having jurisdiction is not
available and permission is granted by that authority, test may be witnessed by
the General Contractor and the Owner and a Contractor's Material and Test
Certificate shall be completed and forwarded to the authority having jurisdiction.

iii. The following minimum tests shall be performed. Any additional tests required by the
local regulating authority having jurisdiction shall also be performed.

1) Flushing Test.
2) Hydrostatic Test.
a) Test Pressure: 205 psi minimum.

3) Leakage Test.
4) Drainage Test.
5) Automatic Fire Alarm System Test.

PART – 2 PRODUCTS

1. Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher - Shall be tri-class dry chemical or multi-purpose (primarily
monoammonium phosphate) or equivalent which is non-toxic agent which extinguishes
flames in seconds and inhibits reflash. It shall be effective against Class A, B and C fires.
Contents shall be 10 lb. (4.5 kg), the unit shall be mounted inside the fire hose cabinet or
thru the fire extinguisher cabinet. Shall be manufactured by ABRO/KIDDIE or Approved
equal.

2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire - Which is contained in cylinder in the liquid form is discharged
as a white cloud of "Snow" which effectively smothers fire. It is a clean, non-conductor of
electricity for Class B and C type fires shall carry the ratings by U.L. for the size. Portable type
shall be 20 lbs. (9.0 kg); 50 lbs. (22.7 kg) shall be wheeled type. Portable type shall be
provided with wall mounting bracket.

3. FE-36 - is the most widely used zero ozone depleting replacement for Halon 1211 in
portable fire extinguishers and is approved for use on Class-A, -B, and -C fires. FE-36™ has
lower toxicity and is exceptional for use in relatively small enclosures. Portable fire
extinguishers containing FE-36™ and certified by UL and EN3.
