Why Mindful MATH
The Mindful Math curriculum incorporates focused math
learning opportunities and many components within each
unit. The activities are hands-on and mind-on, meaning
students are actively working on math and engaging their
minds. Mindful Math lessons encourage different ways of
thinking and representing math concepts.

Mindful Math includes a variety of thoughtful lessons and

activities to help meet the needs of learners and their
learning styles. Students will have many opportunities to
learn and practice new strategies and develop math
fluency through whole group warm-ups and lessons, mental
math, journals, centers, games, and more.

Mindful Math was created to give teachers a

comprehensive math curriculum that engaged minds and
left students knowledgeable and fluent in math concepts.
The curriculum aligns to the U.S. Common Core standards,
the Canadian math curriculums in B.C. and Ontario, as well
as many other math curriculums around the world.

Lesson students how they are alike and different. Tell them that when they
are the same, it is a match. Continue showing them small groups of
objects and asking them to find similarities and differences.
*Draw different basic shapes on the board. Ask students to come up
and circle shapes that match.
*Show students a pair of shoes. Ask them what is alike and different
about the shoes. Have them look at their own and describe them.
*Go on a scavenger hunt to find things that are alike in the classroom.
Students complete the printable practice pages (3 page options for
Independent
Practice lesson #1) by following the directions on the top of each page.

Hands-On ACTIVITY: Draw similar classroom items found in the scavenger hunt.

Task Cards
Mindful Math task cards are short math warm-up activities that
students can complete independently. There are a variety of tasks
that build on skills previously taught in other lessons to build
fluency. They encourage students to be mindful and focus on the
task given. There is one task card for each lesson. I suggest using
the task card before the whole group lesson to get students
thinking about math.

The activities are quick and easy for teachers to prep with a few
simple materials. I suggest printing the task cards on colored
cardstock and keeping them together with a paper clip or on a
ring. Teachers may choose to write the tasks on the board or
chart for the whole class to see. A brief introduction is enough
and students should be able to work on them independently.

Journal Prompts
Mindful Math Journal Prompts are perfect for a warm-up activity,
for extra practice, or for homework. Each prompt reviews the
skills and concepts taught in the previous lesson. They make a
great review activity and help build math understanding.

Example from Unit 1

The journal prompts work well in interactive math notebooks. Print

enough for the class, cut, and paste into notebooks. The activities
can be completed below the journal prompt by following the
instructions given. Students are encouraged to work independently
on the prompts provided and to show their work with drawings,
numbers, and other math representations.

Mental Math
Mindful Math mental math cards are perfect for building mental
math skills and quick recall of important math concepts. Mental
math cards are provided and suggested to use as a whole group
as a warm-up activity. Each lesson plan includes suggestions on
how to use and present the cards to students. Each set features
a new skill to practice and build fluency with.

Example from Unit 1

There are a number of sets of mental math cards provided in

black & print for easy, low ink printing. It is suggested that you
print the cards on colored cardstock and keep them on a ring or
in a small bag.

Practice Printables
Every lesson in Mindful Math includes practice printable pages for
students to complete independently or in small groups following a
lesson. The pages help build math skills and review important
concepts. The pages range in difficulty to allow for differentiation.

Pages are provided in black and white for low-ink printing. It is

suggested that pages be printed ahead of time and kept in math
folders. You could also print all the pages ahead of time and bind
them together to create math workbooks.

Hands-On Activities
There are tons of varied math activities provided for every Mindful
Math unit. Each lesson includes a few different activities (games,
centers). The lesson plans and activity cards provide instructions on
how to use. These hands-on activities encourage focused math
practice. They are highly engaging and fun for kids!

The materials are provided in either black & white for printing on
colored cardstock paper (if desired) or in color. It is suggested that
math centers are laminated for durability. Materials are included to
play each game, included recording sheets.

Mindful MATH – Graphing & Sorting

Quick Checks
Mindful Math Quick Checks are assessments that can be
performed after math lessons and practice. Each Quick Check
includes a short activity for individual or small groups to complete
and show to the teacher. A students completion of the task will
provide teachers with information regarding their understanding.

Quick Checks are provided on small cards that can be printed and
kept together on a ring or in a small baggie. I suggest printing
them on colored cardstock a different color from the Task Cards.
Each Quick Check can be completed with a few simple materials
used during the lesson.

A suggested book list is provided with children’s literature to help

teach math concepts. It is suggested that you check your local
and school library before starting a unit. Each book is linked to
Amazon where it can be bought at a good price. Read more about
how I suggest using children’s literature to teach math HERE.

Duplicate pages are provided for Canadian users with Canadian

spelling and math contents (if applicable).
