Why Mindful MATH
The Mindful Math curriculum incorporates focused math
learning opportunities and many components within each
unit. The activities are hands-on and mind-on, meaning
students are actively working on math and engaging their
minds. Mindful Math lessons encourage different ways of
thinking and representing math concepts.

Math #1. Look for things that are alike and match each other.
Whole *Teacher introduces lesson goal with “I Can…” poster #1.
Group *Teacher holds up 3 items (2 that match and one different). Ask
Lesson students how they are alike and different. Tell them that when they
are the same, it is a match. Continue showing them small groups of
objects and asking them to find similarities and differences.
*Draw different basic shapes on the board. Ask students to come up
and circle shapes that match.
*Show students a pair of shoes. Ask them what is alike and different
about the shoes. Have them look at their own and describe them.
*Go on a scavenger hunt to find things that are alike in the classroom.
Students complete the printable practice pages (3 page options for
Independent
Practice lesson #1) by following the directions on the top of each page.
Hands-On ACTIVITY: Draw similar classroom items found in the scavenger hunt.
Activity GAME: Play ‘Animal Match’ game with a partner.

Lesson *Make a set of button cards in two different sizes. Sort button cards
together in a pocket chart starting with color. Sort them again
according to shape and then size. Have students take turns helping.
*Give small groups of students a container of small mixed up items.
Ask them to pick one attribute and sort them according to that rule.
Share their rule with the class. Ask them to sort again following a
different rule.

etc.). Get different suggestions, choose one as a class, and sort
according to that rule (stand in different groups). Repeat using a
different article of clothing.
*Explain to students that we can sort by two attributes. Using buttons
or button cards, show them how to sort by color and shape (i.e. yellow

Group *Create a large graph on a chart (using pieces provided) with the title
Lesson ‘Favorite Season’ and categories (four seasons) as 4 rows. Explain that
we collect information (data) by asking a question (“What is your
favorite season?”) and record it on a graph next to that category.
*Explain that one way to collect data is with tally marks. Show students
how to write tally marks for numbers 1 to 5 or 10. Give students
popsicle sticks to show and use whiteboards to write tally marks.
*Using the ‘Favorite Season’ recording sheet, students will record a
tally mark each time a classmate says it is their favorite. Complete it

Lesson piles. Line them up according to type in columns, like a pictograph, on
the floor. Discuss what they see and found out.
*Teach students what a pictograph is and its parts (use poster
provided). Create a large class pictograph on a chart using the pieces
provided. Ask students to answer “What fruit do you like best?” and
have them choose that fruit, color it, and add it to the pictograph.
Discuss what they notice and how many people chose each kind.
*Using the ‘Best Fruit’ recording sheet, students color in the pictures
on the pictograph to represent the results found as a class.

Task Cards
Mindful Math task cards are short math warm-up activities that
students can complete independently. There are a variety of tasks
that build on skills previously taught in other lessons to build
fluency. They encourage students to be mindful and focus on the
task given. There is one task card for each lesson. I suggest using
the task card before the whole group lesson to get students
thinking about math.
The activities are quick and easy for teachers to prep with a few
simple materials. I suggest printing the task cards on colored
cardstock and keeping them together with a paper clip or on a
ring. Teachers may choose to write the tasks on the board or
chart for the whole class to see. A brief introduction is enough
and students should be able to work on them independently.

Mindful MATH – Graphing & Sorting
Quick Checks
Mindful Math Quick Checks are assessments that can be
performed after math lessons and practice. Each Quick Check
includes a short activity for individual or small groups to complete
and show to the teacher. A students completion of the task will
provide teachers with information regarding their understanding.
Quick Checks are provided on small cards that can be printed and
kept together on a ring or in a small baggie. I suggest printing
them on colored cardstock a different color from the Task Cards.
Each Quick Check can be completed with a few simple materials
used during the lesson.
