UNIT – I
SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS
1. Define modulation and explain the need of it
2. Define modulation index and bandwidth of AM.
3. Compare different amplitude modulation technique.
4. A carrier wave of frequency 10 MHz and peak value 10V is amplitude modulated by a 5 KHz
sine wave of amplitude 6V. Determine the modulation index.
5. A Radio transmitter radiates 12 KW and carrier power is 7.5 KW. Calculate modulation index.
6. Define DDB-SC Modulation. And Draw the Spectrum.
7. Mention the advantages and disadvantages of SSB.
8. Draw the spectrum of VSB modulated signal and write the equation.

1. What is the principle of amplitude modulation? Derive expression for the AM wave and draw its
spectrum.
2. Develop the equation of a single tone modulation of AM system and Also power relations.
3. For an AM DSBFC modulator with a carrier frequency fc = 100 KHz and maximum modulating
signal frequency fm = 10 KHz. Modulation index is unity. Determine
i) Frequency limits for upper and lower side bands

of 5V.

1. Derive the expression for the frequency modulated signal. Explain what is meant by Narrow

2. A 93.2 MHZ carrier is frequency modulated by 5 KHZ sine wave. The resultant FM signal has
frequency deviation of 40 KHZ. Find Carrier swing, highest &lowest frequencies attained by
FM signal and modulation index.
3. Derive the spectrum analysis of sinusoidal WBFM wave.
4. Derive the bandwidth of WBFM using Carson’s rule.
5. The maximum frequency deviation is 10 kHz and signal frequency is 10 kHz. Find carrier
swing, bandwidth using Carson’s rule and Modulation index

FM wave.
7. Explain the principle of Armstrong method of generation of FM signal using relevant diagrams.

characteristics.
