There has been a health hazard caused by a dusty potholed classroom. Many learners had fallen ill due to the inhaled dust. The administration is
thinking of tilling the classroom. They need to know the number of tiles needed to renovate the floor so that they will purchase enough tiles. The
learners will investigate the number of tiles needed to tile the whole classroom the classroom.

CONTEXT
For years the school authorities, learners and teachers have faced challenges with dust in classrooms. There is need for tiling the floor. The
learners will investigate the number of tiles needed.
FACILITATOR ’S NOTES
 Prepare a CALA register of the learners
 Facilitator should allow adequate time for the collection of data prior to the learners responding to the CALA items
 Learners should prepare a table to display data collected.

Collect data about sizes of the tiles available at hardware shops. Learners will measure the dimensions of the classroom and the tiles chosen. They
will then calculate the area of the classroom and the tiles and then calculate the number of tiles needed to cover the floor of the classroom. They
will present, interpret and explain the data collected. To solve this problem learners will be tasked to calculate the actual number of tiles needed.
How you will be assessed
The teacher will assess you on:
 Measuring the dimensions of the tiles
 Calculating the area of the tile
 Measure the dimensions of the classroom
 Calculate the area of the classroom
