The opportunity that has been offered to me is a once in a lifetime experience – one that I want to

be part of. Kenya is such a large part of the way our lives work but we are taught so little about it, we
are often shown the problems with it rather than the side people actually strive in. I would like to go
to Kenya to understand and educate myself about how the country truly works, the beauty and the
ugliness. This letter will show you why I believe I will use the experience to change not only my
views on the way that I live, but to change how others view our privileged society and to open their
eyes to how they can change the way we gain privilege from the carelessness we give to others, to
change the way that our society gains from others loss. This letter will show you that if I am chosen
to go on this trip, I will make sure I see both sides of the story.

When I was in year 6, I was lucky to be part of my school council at Milton Road Primary School,
where I worked closely with our headteacher to help improve our school. Of course this was a
brilliant insight to how schools work, but what really gave me the experience I need was when I was
given the chance to speak in front of not only staff members of the school, but members of the
government and people who work around the globe to give and improve education for children. I
gave a speech about what education means to me, this was recorded by the Smiley Movement and
can be watched on their Twitter account, this speech was later played at events in countries such as
Germany and Sweden and I was invited to zoom calls (due to covid in 2020) to discuss this,
something I am extremely grateful for. At this same event, I listened to other speakers talk about
their experiences in education and how they have helped to change the system, one of these
speakers was a member of an NPO, he spoke about one child who when he met, was homeless and
struggling, he helped this young girl by introducing her to something his organisation created: ‘street
cricket’ where homeless children would come together to play cricket, building a strong community
out of so little. She had recently sent a letter to him thanking him and explaining how she had
recently been accepted into university, his speech made me realise how much more I can do and
how lucky I am and I think has strongly contributed to my aspirations to become part of a non profit
organisation myself.

I’ve been learning a few words of Swahili so that if I am selected to go to Kenya, I can form a bond
with the kids and adults on a deeper, more personal level and so they feel more comfortable,
especially in the first few days. In doing this, I have begun to understand the beauty of not only the
language, but the culture overall. Part of this culture are the things that surround the central
community, the animals. I’ve always wanted to see these animals in the wild and the way the
community works around (and even with) them, in general just learning more about how people go
about their daily lives in Nakuru. I have experience in charity work, babysitting and coaching and I’ll
use these skills to make my experience as full as possible.

If I’m chosen to go to Kenya, I believe that I can become genuine friends with the people I meet, and
that I will use what I learn to educate others and change how we see people in places we are only
shown the negatives about, to make them see just how many more layers to Kenya there are
