Activity No. 1
Defining Positions

Introduction

In AutoCAD, by coordinates, there are three methods for specifying the locations of points when we
create planar geometric entities.

 Absolute coordinates (Format: X, Y): Type the X and Y coordinates to locate the point on the
current coordinate system relative to the origin.
 Relative rectangular coordinates (Format: @X, Y): Type the X and Y coordinates relative to the
last point.
 Relative polar coordinates (Format: @Distance<angle): Type a distance and angle relative to
the last point.

Objectives
By the end of activity the student should be able to:
1. Differentiate the three coordinate entries
2. Create planar geometric entities using different methods
3. Identify which of the three method is the easiest in creating geometric entities

Drawing lines with the LINE command

1. Move the graphics cursor to the first icon in

the Draw panel. This icon is the Line icon.
Note that a brief description of the Line
command appears next to the cursor
2. Select the icon by clicking once with the
left-mouse-button, which will activate
the Line command.

There are three ways of entering points:

 by coordinates: absolute values, relative values, or polar values

 picking them on the screen, with or without SNAP or Dynamic
 relative to existing geometry

Absolute Value Entries

 In this method, the origin of the model or drawing does not change: the objects are
placed relative to the origin.

Example:

Command: l
LINE
Specify first point: 0,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: 4,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: 4,4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: 0,4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: c

Relative Value Entries

 To enter an incremental or relative value, type the @ symbol (Shift-2) before the
number. @ means 'from the last point.'

Example:

Command: l
LINE
Specify first point: 0,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @4,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @0,4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-4,0
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: c

Polar Value Entries

 Polar coordinates allow you to enter an item, relative to the last item, at a specified
length and angle.
