Activity No. 1
Defining Positions
Introduction
In AutoCAD, by coordinates, there are three methods for specifying the locations of points when we
create planar geometric entities.
Absolute coordinates (Format: X, Y): Type the X and Y coordinates to locate the point on the
current coordinate system relative to the origin.
Relative rectangular coordinates (Format: @X, Y): Type the X and Y coordinates relative to the
last point.
Relative polar coordinates (Format: @Distance<angle): Type a distance and angle relative to
the last point.
Objectives
By the end of activity the student should be able to:
1. Differentiate the three coordinate entries
2. Create planar geometric entities using different methods
3. Identify which of the three method is the easiest in creating geometric entities
Example:
Command: l
LINE
Specify first point: 0,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: 4,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: 4,4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: 0,4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: c
Example:
Command: l
LINE
Specify first point: 0,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @4,0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @0,4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-4,0
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: c
Review Questions
1. Among the three coordinate entries, which is the easiest method? Why?
