Lesson 14

THINK

1 Read the definition of creativity by Steve Jobs. Now take a minute to think what creativity is to you?
Write down your definition of creativity:

2 Discuss the quotation from the picture with your classmates. What do you think it means? Do you agree
or disagree?

3 Answer the following questions:

• Are you afraid of making mistakes?

• Why is it normal to make mistakes?

• Do you think you are a creative person?

• How creativity and making mistakes are connected?

4. Creative people - who are they? What do they do? How do they look
like? What are their main features? Complete the following mind-map and
present it to the class.
5 ingredients of creativity

If you want to learn English, you sign up for courses. If you want to build muscles, you regularly visit the
gym. If you want to grow a good harvest - you use the best fertilizers. And what exactly do you need to work
on to develop creativity?

Here is the list of components of creativity:

• Imagination

• Originality

• Curiosity

• Flexibility of mind

• Perception

5. Can creativity be developed?

Discuss in pairs and write down ideas on how you can develop your creativity. Brainstorm as many ideas
as possible and remember - don’t be afraid to make mistakes. All ideas are valuable and good.

GET CREATIVE

“Two random words”

When creative people are asked how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t actually
do anything, they just noticed. This becomes clear to them over time. They were able to connect different
pieces of their experience and create something new. This is because they have experience and seen more
than others, or because they think more about it.

Step 1 Now pick up your textbook or a dictionary. Open on any page and, without looking, poke your finger.
Write down the first selected word. Repeat the action one more time and select the second word.

Step 2 Then try to find something in common between these two words, contrast them, analyze, compare,
look for relationships. Come up with a short story that would connect these two words, even the most
incredible story.
Step 3 You can do it! Take 5 min to prepare and then present your story to the class.

“Association Game”

Step 1 Look around you. What object caught your eye? For example a mobile phone. Now write 5 adjectives
that best suit your chosen subject.

e.g. a mobile phone is …

stylish

functional

convenient

white

light

Step 2 Write 5 more adjectives that absolutely do not suit your chosen
subject. It will be a little more difficult to do this.

e.g. a mobile phone is ...

natural

fried

kind

wrinkled

sunny

Dig into your feelings and perceptions of the world around you and find the adjectives you need. Make a
little more effort, and everything will work out, the main thing is not to leave the task unfulfilled.

Step 3 Share with your partner and see how your ideas are different from each other.

“Brainstorming Challenge”

Exercise 1

Split into 3 teams. Each team has 3 minutes to make a list of as many things as
possible, which are:

• yellow

• heavy

• funny

yellow heavy funny

Exercise 2

Work in 2 teams. Think of at least 20 ways of HOW to use a BRICK? You have 7 minutes.

“Think outside the box”

Step 1 Look at the examples of pictures created from background crosses.

Step 2 Now get inspired by music, draw and create your own vision.

Step 3 Share with your partner. Compare if you have the same pictures or if they are different. Choose 1
best picture among your partner’s drawings.

Step 4 Get even more creative and try another background.
