Educ 204: Approaches to Curriculum Planning

Traditional and Systematic Approaches
According to a theory, the traditional approach to curriculum theory is based on the idea that the
curriculum should be designed based on specific knowledge which is important for students to learn. This
approach often starts with the development of objectives that define the expected outcomes of the
curriculum. These objectives are usually based on the needs of society, the learners, and the educational
institutions. Once the objectives are identified, the curriculum developers design the content and
instructional methods that will best achieve these objectives.
Traditional approach is also known as the subject approach or the disciplinary approach. In the traditional
approach each subject is separately taught by the teacher in the area of the particular subject. This
approach is focuses more on the subject and its content rather than the process. Example, the teacher
teaches counting, he/she tells the figures of the numbers, but very little guide offers on the learners on
how to arrange numbers properly. It focuses more on the teacher but less on the learner.

The traditional approach to curriculum theory is characterized by several key features:

1. Emphasis on the subject matter: The traditional approach places a strong emphasis on the
content of the curriculum. The goal is to ensure that students learn specific knowledge and
skills that are considered essential for their future success.
2. Prescriptive objectives: This approach often starts with the development of predetermined
objectives that define the expected outcomes of the curriculum. These objectives are usually
based on the needs of society, the learners, and the educational institutions.
3. Structured and systematic delivery: The curriculum is designed to deliver the content in a
structured and systematic way. The goal is that all students receive the same instruction and
could learn the same material.
4. Teacher-centered instruction: This approach relies on teacher-centered instruction, where the
teacher is seen as the primary source of knowledge.
5. Assessment of learning outcomes: Assessment is an integral part of the traditional approach to
curriculum theory. It is used to measure whether students have achieved the desired learning
outcomes and to provide feedback to teachers and learners.
6. Standardization: The traditional approach often leads to standardized curricula that are used
across different schools and educational systems. This helps to ensure that all students are
exposed to the same content and could learn the same material.
Traditional approach has also been criticized for being too rigid and inflexible. Critics argue that it does
not take into account the individual needs and interests of students and can lead to a one-size-fits-all
approach to education.

What is Systematic, it is methodical in procedure and plan, logical presented or formulated as a coherent
body od ideas or principles, and efficient effective in class.
Systematic Approach
It is a network of elements or parts different from each other but each one is special in the sense that each
performs a unique function for the life and effectiveness in the instructional system. It views the entire
educational program as a system with interrelated parts.

the goals which have been established for instruction”- Brown (1969)
In the systematic approach the focus is teaching the learners. Identifies the needs, interest, and readiness
of learners. The teacher selects the appropriate teaching methods to be used. The appropriate learning
experiences and appropriate materials, equipment and facilities will also be selected.
The use of learning material, equipment and facilities necessitates assigning the personnel to assist the
teacher.
The teacher implements and utilizes planned instructions with the use of the service teaching method,
learning activities, and learning materials with the help of other personnel whose role has been defined by
the teacher.
Evaluating and examining if the objectives were attained or not. The result will be the basis or
improvement or revision or the are in need of remedial measure to improves learner’s performance and
attainment of instructional objectives.
