Correction épreuve d’anglais monde contemporain (AMC)

SUJET 1

Introduction

description sommaire des documents (sources, natures…). Indiquez la problématique qui est
donnée dans le sujet : How do the documents illustrate the “language issues” that are
currently at stake in Canada?

I. What political decisions and strategies have been implemented to cope with language
issues in Canada?

● Doc A (infographics) shows how important bilingualism is (English & French) in

terms of job opportunities (95% of Canadians argue that it is positive to master
the two languages).
● Doc A: according to the survey, French is as important as English (PM should
speak French and English [according to 86% of the population], probably thanks
to the 1969 Official Languages Act. So political decisions played a key role.
● Like Doc A, Doc B (action plan from the Canadian government) shows how
essential French is and describes political strategies to cast light on French-
speaking immigrants. They seek to attract French-speaking people to enhance
the Francophone minority by implementing national programs (IRCEE,
temporary programs etc.). + almost $41 million invested to do so.
● Doc C: criticises the Canadian government and their previous political decisions
and strategies when it comes to indigenous languages (not mentioned at all in
Doc A and Doc B). These languages might go extinct because of laws or
“residential schools” that aimed at making sure that indigenous children would
not learn indigenous languages.
● Doc C shows how biased the Canadian government was (willing to enhance a
Francophone minority while ignoring indigenous communities).

II. How are these issues perceived in Canada?

● Doc A and Doc B are quite similar, while doc C gives another perspective on the
matter.
● Doc A: Canadians are proud of their bilingual (French / English) history: 8 in 10
Canadians agree that it is key to Canada’s identity.
● Doc A gives the impression that French is widely spoken in Canada, while doc B
refers to a “Francophone minority”.
● Doc C shows that French might become an obsolete language as it becomes
less and less spoken (English-speaking immigration mostly) and as indigenous
communities seek to grow more and more.
● French seems to be associated with the past and does not represent the future
of Canada (doc C) and doc B.

Conclusion

Là aussi, la conclusion doit être brève. Reprenez brièvement la problématique et terminez par
une ouverture.

Traduction

SUJET 2

Introduction

description sommaire des documents (sources, natures…). Indiquez la problématique qui est
donnée dans le sujet : How do the documents illustrate the transformation of the city of
Sheffield?

I. Successes and challenges

● Doc A argues that Sheffield is “UK’s most sustainable city” [= success]. It used
to be seen as an ugly city (G.Orwell) but now it has turned into a popular one.
● became sustainable because of different factors: new parks “wide-open
spaces” (l.10), “renewable energy production” l.11.
● Doc B: However, Rachel Reeves wants to turn this green city into the “Steel
City” (l.5) that it used to be and which is also mentioned in doc A (l.4). Rachel
Reeves (Labour Party) argues that it should be a “green steel city” which seems
challenging and paradoxical.
● Doc A and doc B both allude to Sheffield’s past (during the Industrial
Revolution).
● Doc C: also states that Sheffield became a “green city”—also refers to wide-
open spaces (as in Doc A).
● Doc C, however, criticises previous Labour or Conservative governments and
argues that politicians’s decisions might fail and be detrimental to Sheffield.
● Doc D: depicts a grey and dull Sheffield and then a greener, seemingly healthier
Sheffield (drastic changes made only in 4 years’ time): impressive and
successful changes.

II. Impacts of such a transformation on local and national political debates

● Sheffield has earned a new reputation: from a grey city (doc A) to a green and
wonderful city (doc C and doc D).
● Doc A: Douglas Johnson (Sheffield City Council’s Green Party [local institution]
is very ambitious (“reach net-zero by 2030” l.15)—alludes to financial help from
the government to make it happen. Similar to doc C (Martin Phillips: also a
councillor for Sheffield Green Party). So doc A and doc C show the impact of
local political decisions.
● However: doc B (Rachel Reeves: Labour Party [national debate]): wants to
invest in the steel industry (and then in Sheffield) [contrary to the Conservative
party, according to her l.10.]
● As Sheffield is a prosperous and green city, Conservative and Labour Members
of Parliament seek to invest in Sheffield’s future.
● New projects (also alluded to in doc D).
Traduction
