In a warm simmer afternoon in a park or garden, bees are buzzing around the flowers.
You might be sitting in the sun and feeling kind of lazy. But the bees are busy doing work that is
important to you. Bees work very hard day and night. They are also very organized.
Bees are insects. They have three pairs of legs and four wings. Like all insects, they have
a head, thorax and abdomen. They have mouth parts and a tongue for collecting nectar. Becs live
in groups called colonies. They can also live in hives. They like flowers and you can see them
from one flower to another. They collect nectar and pollen as food. They also make wax'which is
used to make candles. Bees have a queen. There is only one queen in the hive. The queen lays
eggs in the hive. There are other bees called workers. They make the hive and collect nectar.
They also protect the hive. They sting anyone or anything that disturbs them.

The are many species of wild cats ranging in size. Some of the wild cats are leopard,
lions and tigers. Which of these did our domestic cats come from? Cats are more difficult to tame
than other members of the dog family like wolf cubs or jackal cubs.

Like people, wolves, jackals and dogs live and work together naturally in packs. They
are social animals. Cats are not at all like this. As wild animals, they live and hunt alone. They
are naturally unsociable animals. This makes them difficult to tame. Even the kittens of
domestic cats, if born in a different corner of the garden, can be difficult to tame unless brought
into the house very young.
If you have both a cat and a dog in your house, you will notice the difference in their
characters. The dog wants to take part in everything that is going on as a full member of the
family. He sometimes barks at strangers to keep them away and has a much sense of
responsibility to the house and family. But your cat simply lives with you because it suits him
and takes no real part in things. Nobody ever heard of a cat yowling at a stranger or bitter at a
burglar.

10. According to the first paragraph, which statement is true?

A. Cats and dogs are easier to tame than wolves and jackals.
B. Cats, leopards, lions and tigers belong to the same family.
C. Tigers, lions, dogs and jackals belong to the same family.
D. Wolves and jackals are members of wild cats.
11. Why are cats not easy to tame? They
A. hunt alone and are not social
B. are very fearful and very dangerous.
C. don't like to live with people.
D. have funny characters.
12. According to the passage, why do cats live with people?
A. Because they were tamed.
B. Because of the benefits they get from people.
C. To show responsibility as the owner of the house.
D. They don't like living as wild animals.

Jack and I examined the bread-fruit. We were much struck with its broad leaves which
were twelve or eighteen inches long, deeply indented and of a glossy smoothness like laurel.
The tree bears two or three crops of fruits in a year-much like wheatened bread in
appearance. It is found in shape, about six inches in diameter with a rough outer skin. It forms
the principal food of many south sea islanders. The fruit of the tree we inspected hung in clusters
of twos and threes on the branches and were of various colours from light pea-green to brown
and rich yellow. Jack said the yellow fruits were ripe. The trunk was twenty feet high, being
quite destitute of the branches upto that height, where it branched off into a beautiful head. The
wood which is durable and of a good colour is used to build native houses, the bark of the young
branches being made into cloth. Another product of this wonderful tree is the gum which serves
the natives for pitching their canoes.

Read the following passage and then questions 6 – 9.

Drug use is on the rise among the youth today. Young people experiment with both hard drugs
and alcohol. Some claim it gives them a shared experience. Others say drugs help them to calm
down. There are those who are tricked into believing that drugs would help them solve whatever
problems they have. The end result is getting addicted.

Alcoholism for instance, is a chronic disorder in which a person is unable to refrain from
frequent and excessive consumption of alcohol. Excessive drinking damages the liver and leads
to liver cirrhosis. The alcoholic has impaired judgement and disturbed sleep.

The government of Kenya has ensured that there is no sale of alcohol for children under the age
of 18. In Kenya, it is illegal for minors to consume alcohol. According to the Alcoholic Drinks
Control Act 2010, it is an offense for a person to sell, give, or supply alcoholic drinks to a person
under the age of 18. It is also an offense for a person under the age of 18 to purchase, attempt to
purchase, or consume alcoholic drinks.

Surprisingly we still find some rogue businessmen doing the contrary. This menace of drug and
substance use should be fought by everyone. It should not be left to the government alone. We
all need a society that will develop tomorrow. We all need leaders tomorrow. We all need a
generation after us. For us to achieve all that, we must bring up our children in the right way.
They should know that drug and substance use is something to be avoided like the plague.

The lion, the donkey and the zebra were very good friends. They lived together in the forest.
They also hunted together and ate together as well. Whenever the lion went out to hunt, her
children would be well taken care of. The problem was she did not know who between the zebra
and the donkey looked after her cubs. Every time she dared ask; both would respond and say
they did. This confused her even more.

To make matters worse, the lion was unable to identify who the donkey was and who the zebra
was because they looked so much alike. One day, the lion came up with an idea to paint stripes
so that he could tell them apart. He would thereafter hide somewhere in the bush and watch who

The benefits of being a true sportsperson are many. A successful sportsperson in school gets an
opportunity to represent their school at different levels. This builds self-esteem and provides
great inspiration to others.

Think of athletes like Eliud Kipchoge, Vivian Cheruiyot, Geoffrey Kamworor to mention just
but a few. Do they not inspire you? I believe they do. They all started by participating in sports
while in school.

Character and personal growth are other important things you can achieve from sports. Being a
true sportsperson requires a great deal of discipline. You mould yourself into becoming the best
at what you do. It creates a sense of worth and pride to be a role model to others. One also grows
financially. The sports industry is one of the most rewarding industries in the world today.
Sportspeople are highly paid, especially when they get to national and international levels.

There is also the benefit of developing teamwork and problem-solving skills. Working to
achieve a common goal in a group teaches group discipline and selflessness. You learn to

Read the following passage and answer questions 6 to 10.

The owner of a missing puppy is asking for help. "My baby has been missing for
over a month now, and I want him back so badly," said Mrs. Naliaka, a fifty-six-
year-old woman. Mrs. Naliaka lives by herself in a trailer park near the park. She
said that Clyde, her one-year-old puppy, didn't come home for dinner more than a
month ago, so she called the police. When the policeman asked her to describe
Clyde, she told him that Clyde had beautiful green eyes, had all his teeth but was
missing half of his left ear, and was completely white. She then told the officer that
Clyde was about a foot high.

A bell went off. "Is Clyde your child or your pet?" the officer suspiciously asked,
"Well, he's my puppy," Mrs. Naliaka replied. "Lady, you're supposed to report
missing PERSONS, not missing DOGS," said the irritated policeman. "Well, who
can I report this to?" She asked. "You can't. You have to ask around your
neighborhood or put-up flyers," replied the officer.

Mrs. Naliaka figured that a billboard would work better than a piece of paper on a
telephone pole. There was an empty billboard at the end of her street just off the
roundabout on the highway. The bill board had a phone number on it. She called
that number, and they told her they could blow up a picture of Clyde from Mrs.
Naliaka's picture album and put it on the billboard for all to see. "But how can
people see it when they walk by on the roundabout?" She asked. "Oh, don't worry,

ma'am, the roundabout is so full of commuters that no one moves.'' They told her it
would cost only three thousand two hundred and three shillings a month.

The month has passed, but Clyde has not appeared. Because she has almost no
money in savings, Mrs. Naliaka called the local newspaper to see if anyone could
help her rent the billboard for just one more month. She is waiting but, so far, no
one has stepped forward.

Read the following passage and answer questions 11 to 15.

I haven't always liked dancing. In fact, my parents couldn't get me to go to classes

when I was young, no matter how hard they tried. My mum had been a
professional dancer and always told me how much I'd enjoy it if I joined a dance
group. Unfortunately, I was very shy as a child and I didn't like to meet new
people. I was much happier watching the TV or playing at home with my sister.
When my mum tried to get me to attend a dance class I refused.

Soon after I started secondary school, I saw a group of girls dancing to the latest
songs in the school gym. They looked really good and I started to take an interest
in the class, even though it was just looking through the window at first. Then one
day a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to join. I liked the idea of starting with
someone I knew. Moreover, we had both danced together for fun at my house or
her house, so it didn't seem like such a big step to join a class together.

That was 3 years ago. Since then, I've been going every week and I love it.
Sometimes I help teach the classes for the little children. People tell me I'm very
good and my teacher has said I should enter local competitions, even ones that
could mean you dance on TV.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow.

The constitution is the fundamental principles or established rules that constitute the legal basis
of a political party, organization or other type of entity and commonly determines how that entity
is to be governed. When these principles are written down into a single document or set of legal
documents, those documents may be said to embody a written constitution.

Constitutions concern different levels of organizations, from sovereign countries to companies

and associations. A treaty that establishes an international organization is also its constitution, in
that it defines how that organization is constituted. Within states, a constitution defines the
principles upon which the state is based, the procedure in which laws are made and by whom.
Some constitutions, also act as limiters of state power, by establishing lines which a state's rulers
cannot cross, such as fundamental human rights.

The Kenyan constitution acts as a safeguard against human rights violation. The human rights
contained in the constitution is the right to life, freedom of speech, association and religion, right
to own land or business and several more. Without the constitution, there would be disorder and
chaos. Without the constitution everyone would do as they please without regard to others.
People wouldn't care whom they hurt and this world would be impossible to live in.

Questions

11. What is the constitution according to the passage?

A. Principals and rules that govern a party, organization or association.
B. Written letters that tell us what to do

Most telephone conversations are different from face to face ones. This is mainly because while
talking on phone, we do not normally see the face of the person we are talking with, unless when
making a video call. We can tell whether they are happy or not only through what they say. In a
face-to-face dialogue, a smile would show friendliness, but in a telephone chat, the smile cannot
be seen.
Therefore, when talking on telephone, we need to be careful about the words we use. Polite
words like "Please", "Excuse me", May I," "Thank you", "It's my pleasure" and "I beg your
pardon" show that we respect the person we are talking to on phone. We should try to use the
words more frequently not only when talking on phone but also in our face-to-
face conversations.

6. Telephone conversations differ from face-to-face ones in that

A. normally in telephone conversations, we don't see each other, unlike in face-to-
face.
B. face-to-face conversation can be made possible by video calling, unlike in phone
chats.
C. unlike in face-to-face conversations, smiles can be noticed in phone conversation.
D. in face-to-face conversations, costs have to be incurred unlike in telephone
conversations.
7. How can we tell that one is not friendly in a telephone conversation?
A. When they talk loudly.
B. Through what they say.
C. When they wear a frowny face.
D. When they smile through the conversation.
8. What is the benefit of using polite word in our conversations according to this passage?
A. Using the words raises our dignity.
B. When we use polite words, we are able to tell the moods of our friends.
C. Using polite words makes us gain respect.
D. Using polite words is important because it saves time.
9. Polite words
A. should be used when making telephone calls only.
B. must always be used when talking face-to face with our friends.
C. should neither be used on phone nor in face-to-face talks.
D. should be used both when making calls or talking to others face-to-face.
