Lee Chong Wei was born in Bagan Serai, Perak, into a Malaysian Chinese family. In his
early years, he favored basketball. His mother soon banned him from the game due to the
high temperatures at the outdoor basketball court. At the age of 11, Chong Wei began to
learn badminton. Chong Wei accompanied his father to the badminton hall and attracted the
attention of a local coach who took him in as his student. When he was 17 years old, he
joined the national squad.
As a singles player, Chong Wei was ranked first worldwide for 199 consecutive
weeks from 21 August 2008 to 14 June 2012. He is the fourth Malaysian player to achieve
such a ranking. Not only that, he is the only Malaysian shuttler to hold the number one
ranking for more than a year. His achievement to be the first Malaysian to reach the finals in
the men's singles at the 2008 Olympic Games has earned him the title Datuk and the status of
a national hero. He is the most successful Malaysian Olympian in history as he repeated his
achievement in 2012 and 2016.
His greatest rival in badminton is Lin Dan of China. Both are the two greatest
badminton players of all time. They have contested in many major tournament finals. All
matches were very close hard-fought three-setters and mostly won by Lin Dan. Nevertheless,
both are good friends off the court, even inviting one another to each other's weddings and
sharing a mutual love for fast cars and watches.
Lee Chong Wei is married to his long-time teammate and companion, Wong Mew
Choo. The couple is blessed with two children, Kingston and Terrance. His wife knows him
