QUESTIONS PHASE 1
Some of the questions have possible solutions in the brackets
Try them all and present your workings at the beginning of the term
A. SOLVING EQUATIONS
Important to note
Definitions of angle
(i) Acute angle is an angle between 00 and
900. It lies in the 1st quadrant
(ii) Right angle is an angle = 900
(iii) Obtuse angle is an angle between 900 and 1800. It lies in the 2nd quadrant
(iv) Reflex angle is an angle between 1800 and 3600. It lies in the 3rd and 4th quadrants
3
1. If sin 𝜃 = 5 and 00 ≤ 𝜃 ≤ 3600. Find the possible values of 3tanθ – cotθ
2
(ii) sin2θ + 5cos2θ = 3 ( θ = ±450, ±1350)
(iii) 4cot2θ + 24cosecθ + 39 = 0 (θ = 16.60, 23.60, 156.40, 163.40)
This involves the use of identities to eliminate the trigonometric values in equation
3
19. Eliminate θ from each of the following pairs of relationships
(a) 𝑥 = 3𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃, 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃 [𝑥𝑦 = 3]
(b) 5𝑥 = 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃, 𝑦 = 2𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 [100𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 4 = 0]
(c) 𝑥 = 3 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃, 𝑦 = 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 [(𝑥 − 3)2 + 𝑦 2 = 1]
(d) 𝑥 = 2 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃, 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 = 1 + 𝑦 [(𝐱 − 𝟐)𝟐 + (𝐲 + 𝟏)𝟐 = 𝟏]
20. Eliminate θ from the following equation
(i) 𝑥 = 𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = 𝑏 + 𝑐𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 [𝑎𝑐 = 𝑥(𝑦 – 𝑏)]
(ii) 𝑥 = 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃 + 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝜃 – 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝜃 [𝑥𝑦 = 1]
