During the COVID-19 outbreak, most universities and schools have been
offered online. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered new ways of learning.
Classes once delivered face-to-face are often replaced by online activities and
discussions. The new normal in education is the increased use of online learning
tools. All around the world, educational institutions are looking toward online learning
platforms to continue with the new method of educating students. The new normal
has transformed the concept of education with online learning at the core of this
transformation. Today, digital learning has emerged as a necessary resource for
college kids and schools all over the world. For several educational institutes, this is
often an entirely new way of education that they have had to adopt. Although online
learning provides many positive impacts, it also has many challenges. Online
learning has many challenges, especially against distraction everywhere, lack of
student engagement, and social connectedness.

One of the difficulties that online distance learning students must overcome
is distractions. In addition to external causes like noise, internal issues like
weariness, ruminating, or worry can also induce distraction. One of the primary
sources of distraction during online lessons is family issues. Parents or family
members' laughter, arguments, and conversations might keep students from paying
attention during lectures. Additionally, students have access to items like television,
phones, and games. For students who stay at home, online learning will become
more difficult than face-to-face learning. Indeed, our study habits and environment
might distract us from our work. Some students listen to class lectures on computers
while lying in bed in their cozy pajamas. This can be a problem for concentration
because humans mentally associate the bed with resting. While using electronic
devices is necessary for online learning, they can easily divert attention for long
periods. Most students hold their phones in their hands or leave them on their desks
while they study. Without a doubt, at this time, a text message from a friend can start
a conversation that leads to complete disregard for an assignment. Students might
open new tabs to view amusing videos or scroll through social media threads.
Another reason why online learning is proven to be a challenge for many
people is that there is a noticeable lack of student engagement in online classes.
Without a doubt, this will make academic practitioners lose their enthusiasm for
teaching and learning because of some discomfort they were experiencing.
Although, this blame does not entirely fall on students’ shoulders because some
students need support in the form of in-person teaching like the norms in the school.
Usually, lecturers can detect students who may face difficulties during face-to-face
learning but with distance learning, the matter becomes more complicated especially
if the students are not actively engaged in class. Distance learning requires students
to be more independent, and proven difficult for students who have insufficient
technical knowledge or support. Furthermore, many students are gripped with
financial issues to even afford the basic device used to perform distance learning.
Other examples of financial insecurities may include not affording basic connections
or a conducive environment to learn in. So, students who have difficulties have a
problem catching up with the rest of the class and if the burden becomes so great,
that student may feel alienated and disengage instead from the class. Although this
issue may look like a daunting task to solve, there are a few solutions lecturers can
think about such as contacting directly with their student or their guardian to discuss
problems that have risen. For example, a lecturer can buy a new device for students
to use in distance learning. In addition to that, lecturers can track a record of
students who have some difficulties learning so they can give them extra classes
when face-to-face learning becomes available again. In summary, the lack of student
engagement can be solved with the help of teachers’ initiatives to provide help to
unfortunate students.

Lastly, online distance learning may create a lack of social connectedness

in students. Some students can work independently, while others feel more at ease
in a campus environment where they can easily reach their lecturers or other
students. For example, some students prefer to learn face-to-face with their lecturers
and friends rather than learn through the online class as it could ease them to ask
their lecturers or friends about something they didn’t know. From another
perspective, online distance learning could also foster more interaction between
students and lecturers. Therefore, lecturers should frequently ask their students in
class or create more discussion sessions with students to create a more social
environment. In contrast, most students also might think that conventional education
in a physical environment is the most natural and effective mode of communication.
But that’s not always the case. There are no back-row seats in an online class.
Almost everyone is seated front and center. In an online class, students who are too
afraid to pose a question in front of the class can start a live, private conversation
with the lecturer instead. To sum up, online distance learning has its own pros and
cons. The impact is received by both students who are comfortable with it as well as
students who prefer face-to-face learning methods depending on their learning
style.Lectures also have to play their role to create a conducive learning environment
so that students could learn easily.

In conclusion, online learning is a type of education system which allows

students to learn about any particular course or subject from practically any place by
just having access to a good internet connection and digital technology. There are
many challenges that students face when it comes to online learning. Some of those
challenges are distraction everywhere, lack of student engagement, and social
connectedness. Challenges like this should be used as motivation by all students to
always strive in learning. Each of these challenges should also be addressed by all
the people and even the authorities. Indirectly, these challenges can mature the
mind and teach the meaning of patience. Thus, challenges will make students
stronger.
