Arabic 101 Comunication Skills

2016-2017 Academic Year, Fall Term

COURSE OUTLINE

Instructor: Tawhida ATHAMNIA Office: 9th floor


Course duration: 14 weeks with 3 hours each week
Course materials: Prepared by the instructor

 COURSE OVERVIEW (for whom, description and aim of the course)

This course is designed for students who are keen to learn Arabic language and culture.
The primary aim of the course is to develop the students’ skills during the course;
(Listening, Speaking, Grammar and Vocabulary)

 Main Characteristics of the Arabic Language:

 It belongs to the Semitic family of languages or the Afro-Asiatic language family


including Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, and Ethiopic

 There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet, consisting of consonants, vowels, and
symbols, and it is read and written from right to left.

 It is a phonetic language.

 There are three main forms of Arabic: the classical Arabic, the modern Arabic, and the
colloquial Arabic.

 There are codified rules for classical Arabic and an emphasis on mastering these rules.
The modern and colloquial Arabic are not static.The issue of diglossia - the fact that
Arabs read and write one form of Arabic but speak a variety of different dialects.

 There are many dialects. The most common are the Egyptian, Iraqi, Moroccan, and
Najdi in the Arabic peninsula.

 The Arabic calligraphy is an art in itself.

 It has been a literary language for over 1,500 years and is spoken by many different
people over a vast area of land.

 GOALS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES:

ARB 101 course is instructed in Arabic and English, it aims to:


 develop the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as
cultural awareness
 provide a good balance between understanding the culture, vocabulary, writing system
and grammar structures of the Arabic language
 enhance communication and interaction
 support comprehensive and productive skills in speech and writing through authentic
based activities and guided practice in the use of Arabic language
 Encourage the students to seek opportunities to learn and practise the four skills
outside the classroom
 take advantage of learning resources provided by the tutor and the programme
 make participants recognise some very common words, phrases and sentences in
Arabic script and read short simple texts in Arabic.

 OVERALL STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE AND REQUIREMENTS (the


details of all graded assignments and exams)

To reach the course aims, students are expected to come to class prepared and on time, doing
necessary readings and assignments in advance. Active participation in class activities and
discussions is of much importance.

Achievement exams: Students must be able to evaluate what they have learnt in the classroom
from Grammar and Vocabulary.

 ASSESSMENT AND GRADING (Percentages , grading scale etc.)

The following table lists all assignments and their values. You must complete all the required
assignments in order for you to receive full credit for the course.

QUIZZES (10 pts) Assessment (out of 100): Grading Scale


There will be 2 quizzes and every Participation 10%
Quiz is graded out of 5 points. Quizzes 10 % 100-90 : AA 74-70 : CC
SPEAKING TEST (10 pts) Assignment 10%
This test aims to evaluate the students’ Speaking Test 10 % 89-85 : BA 69-60 : DC
abilities to express themselves. Mid-term Exam: 25 % 84-80 : BB 59-50 : DD
Assignment (10 pts) End-of-Term Exam: 35 %
This test aims to test the students’ 79-75 : CB 49 and below : F
skills at writing through production
activities.
Participation (10pts)
The overall attendance and
participaton of the students will be
graded out of 10
MID-TERM (25 pts)
FINAL EXAM (35 pts)

Expectations from the students


 showing respect to different points of views
 expressing thoughts confidently both in written and spoken language
 taking initiative to start and lead a speech / participating in class discussions
 being able to work in groups collaboratively
 meeting the deadlines
 being responsible for their own learning
 being responsible for keeping track of their absenteeism
 informing the instructor about the excuse of not attending or submitting any graded
work via e-mail
 having academic awareness towards others’ works, avoiding copying any verbal or
written work of others which means PLAGIARISM

Academic Honesty
Plagiarism is the act of cheating another individual’s work as words, ideas, data and research
materials. It also includes all published and unpublished, electronic, written and spoken
works. All assignments to be submitted are to be your own production. Moreover, students
should be aware of the fact that submitting their own assignments that they previously
prepared and submitted to another course is also an act of plagiarism. Any idea or quotation
students make use of from another material must be referred as in-text and end-of-text
citation. It is of utmost importance to know that disciplinary action will be taken in case of
plagiarism.
Classroom Behavior
Any slang language, insults to both peers and instructors will not be allowed in the class. In
this case, Higher Education Council’s (YÖK) disciplinary procedures will be followed. To
have an effective teaching and learning process, we must maintain both respect and tolerance.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend classes in order to get the utmost benefit.

Any student with a health report is to get an approval from Istanbul Kemerburgaz University
infirmary in 3 days. It is the student’s responsibility to submit their health report to School of
Foreign Languages Secretary. (Block A, 9th floor)
Health Reports will only be accepted for Mid-Term Exam Make-up and will NOT be
accepted by taking Quiz or Speaking Test Make-up.
