ARB 101 Syllabus
COURSE OUTLINE
This course is designed for students who are keen to learn Arabic language and culture.
The primary aim of the course is to develop the students’ skills during the course;
(Listening, Speaking, Grammar and Vocabulary)
There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet, consisting of consonants, vowels, and
symbols, and it is read and written from right to left.
It is a phonetic language.
There are three main forms of Arabic: the classical Arabic, the modern Arabic, and the
colloquial Arabic.
There are codified rules for classical Arabic and an emphasis on mastering these rules.
The modern and colloquial Arabic are not static.The issue of diglossia - the fact that
Arabs read and write one form of Arabic but speak a variety of different dialects.
There are many dialects. The most common are the Egyptian, Iraqi, Moroccan, and
Najdi in the Arabic peninsula.
It has been a literary language for over 1,500 years and is spoken by many different
people over a vast area of land.
To reach the course aims, students are expected to come to class prepared and on time, doing
necessary readings and assignments in advance. Active participation in class activities and
discussions is of much importance.
Achievement exams: Students must be able to evaluate what they have learnt in the classroom
from Grammar and Vocabulary.
The following table lists all assignments and their values. You must complete all the required
assignments in order for you to receive full credit for the course.
Academic Honesty
Plagiarism is the act of cheating another individual’s work as words, ideas, data and research
materials. It also includes all published and unpublished, electronic, written and spoken
works. All assignments to be submitted are to be your own production. Moreover, students
should be aware of the fact that submitting their own assignments that they previously
prepared and submitted to another course is also an act of plagiarism. Any idea or quotation
students make use of from another material must be referred as in-text and end-of-text
citation. It is of utmost importance to know that disciplinary action will be taken in case of
plagiarism.
Classroom Behavior
Any slang language, insults to both peers and instructors will not be allowed in the class. In
this case, Higher Education Council’s (YÖK) disciplinary procedures will be followed. To
have an effective teaching and learning process, we must maintain both respect and tolerance.
Attendance
Students are expected to attend classes in order to get the utmost benefit.
Any student with a health report is to get an approval from Istanbul Kemerburgaz University
infirmary in 3 days. It is the student’s responsibility to submit their health report to School of
Foreign Languages Secretary. (Block A, 9th floor)
Health Reports will only be accepted for Mid-Term Exam Make-up and will NOT be
accepted by taking Quiz or Speaking Test Make-up.
