followers towards the achievement of the said strategy.(this is according to adeoye mayowa: A
leadership manager in Nigeria.(2009). Not only that but also Bennis & Nanus:leaders:strategies for
taking charge (1997) said that leadership is like the abominable snowman whose footprints are every
where but who is nowhere to be seen. Leaders will have a vision of what what can be achieved and then
communicate this to others and evolve strategies for realizing the vision.
Management according to Abraham maslow state that refer to someone’s ability to healthily

person’s psychological health and accelerate their self actualization. Manager ensure that the available
resources are well organized and applied to produce the best result. Management and leadership are
important for the delivery of good service . although the two are similar in some respects ,they may
involve different types of outlook, skills, and behavior. Good manager strive to be good leaders and
good leaders, need management skills to be effective.
The followings are the difference between leadership and management in differents
aspects
In 1983, Watson stated that manager take care of structure and system, but leaders focus on
the communication, motivation, and shared goals. Also Watson mentioned 7S strategy which include;
strategy, structure, systems, shared values, skills, and style ;is more useful for leader comparing to
managers. Is more effective for leaders comparing to manager. And that bryman added that leadership
is all about strategic motivation.
In 1987 John kotter, a professor of the Harvard business school states that leadership goes
beyond routine tasks to cope with change, whereas management is regular formal responsibility to cope
with routine complexity. Kotter argues that leadership is process that aims to develop a vision for the
organization align people with that vision; and motivate people to action through the basic needs
fulfillment. Kotter stated that leadership is different from management, but not for the reasons most
people think. Leadership isn’t mystical and in his book “learning to lead: a workbook on becoming a
leader”, (pg 9).
In 2003, covey stated that the leader believes in vision and goals, has strong values, and
works to make sure that his attendants are in the right direction while manager focus on structural tools,
and work related processes. Leader has good communicator because they spend more time with their
followers. Also gossiling and murphy (2004) think that leader work to make the organization ready to
face any new change and ensure the development of sense of security.
Also Bennis and nannus(1985) describes the differences between the leadership and
management in one sentence:; “leader do the right things manager do things right”( pg 33) more over
in 1989 bennis ststed that “to survive in the twenty first century, we are going to need a new generation
of leader. While leadership and management share similar roles it is important to make a distinction
between those two functions. The most important difference between manager and leader is to achieve
the goals. Manages exercise their control and through formal power, but leader use their vision, and by
insipiration , motivation to align their followers.
Not only management and leadership have difference but also there is similarities of
leadership and management explained as follows
According to the guardian (2013) stated that Both leadership and management involve
influence, working with people, and working to achieve common goals.the heads are supposed to lead
by example. Every body under them operates or woks according to their spirits. They can influenced
people to either bad or well.however , the fields of leadership and management considered very
similarities.
Both leadership and management are anxious of goals achievement. They involve in working
towards a specific set vision. Each one of them focuses on the vision they need to achieve goal planned
so they both engage in rulling or stand for making sure that they provide more motivation and
inspiration of working so as to gain their desire, no matter for their difference but are same incase of
goal achievement in organization.
Both management and leadership involves working with people. It includes being ahead of
people and determining the way forward are the examples of other in working or employees follow
them so as to achieve goals they direct and motivate others at work in a firm. Instead of management
accomplished work done by others but during working and performing they have people who works
with them are those controlled with him or her.
Both management and leadership are crucial components of a business while leaders inside
an organization can insipire others without necessarily holding positions of power, manager are in
charge of a group of individuals. All business , large and small businesses, are constantly looking for the
ideal employee with both leadership and management abilities . therefore it is understandable why
organizations rely on those in management.
Both get involved in day to day activities of the organization, both leaders and manager they
are perfomed or they engage in day to day working forexample manager perfom his or her duties of
directing employees also leader perfom his duties every day by showing or directing his or her followers
what to do in workplace and on how so as to achieve desired goal thus why we say leadership and
management are similar.
Conclusively , every organization needs managers and leaders and their roles should be
viewed as complementary to one another, the optimal effectiveness of an organization can only reach if
the organization has strong leadership and strong management. In day to day dynamic workplace,
organization need leaders to cope with new challenges , and transform organization in order to achieve
a competitive advantage in the market place.
