About this tutorial

Size of a doll
Using a similar yarn to mine your doll will be about 20 cm (without the ears).
NOTE! This toy is not symmetrical and imitates 2D picture, so it looks the best when you look
at it from the right side.

See how this toy looks like:

Materials & Tools
1) YARN. I used Alize Baby Best DK weight (8 ply / 11 wpi) polyester yarn (100g –
240mt (3,5 Oz – 262 yards))

Pink (color code: 161) – about 80 g

White (color code: 55) – about 10 g
Yellow-white (color code: 450) – about 5 g
Black (color code: 60) – about 20 g

2) HOOK. I used 2.5 mm (US size 1/B – 2/C) and 2 mm crochet hook (US size 1/B)

3) Polyester fiberfill, wool, wadding etc. for STUFFING – about 80g (2.5 Oz)

4) Heavier stuffing for the bottom of the body (optional)

5) Safety toy EYES in oval shape (diameter 10mm * 13mm (0,4” * 0,5”))
OR you can crochet them (crochet pattern is included)
6) YARN NEEDLE, sewing PINS, SCISSORS, stitch MARKER

How to read my pattern

sc n = make n single crochet stitches, one in each stitch.
Number of the row

Pattern, you have to repeat

Number of times
Number of stitches in a row after finishing a row……

4) {sc 2, inc} * 6 (24)

That means that in the fourth row you are going to repeat the fragment “two single
crochet stitches, increase” six times and at the end of the row you will get 24 stitches.

3
Abbreviations and Technology
ch =
chain stitch

sc =
single crochet

ss = slip stitch

dc =
double crochet

hdc = half double crochet

inc = increase
Increases look like “slingshots” on a crocheted fabric, so it is easy to spot them. You are
going to need increases to WIDEN your crochet detail. To increase one stitch, you have to
simply work TWO stitches IN ONE stitch.

dec = decrease = sc2tog

Decrease – is really just subtracting a stitch in a single crochet row. You are going to need
decreases to NARROW your crochet detail.

4
Puff stitch = Yarn over, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop, (yarn over,
insert hook in same stitch or space, yarn over, pull up a loop) 3 times. There will be 9 loops
on hook. Yarn over, and draw through all loops on hook.

Sc3into1 = double increase

Three single crochet stitches are crocheted into one stitch, so you add 2 extra stitches to the
total amount of stitches in the round.
Sc3tog = double decrease
Three single crochet stitches are crocheted together, so you decrease 2 stitches from the
total amount of stitches in the round.
Sc5tog
Five single crochet stitches are crocheted together, so you decrease 4 stitches from the total
amount of stitches in the round.
FLO = front loops only , BLO = back loops only

How to make invisible decrease

The standard method of decreasing is to SC2TOG, which leaves a bit of a bump and a small
gap. On the one hand, it makes it easier to find a decrease if you have lost the count, but on
the other hand, stuffing going to show through the gaps and bumps will give uneven
surfaces… and all the work will look untidy. However, if you promise to count your stitches
carefully, and use a stitch marker, I will show you a DECREASE METHOD, that makes
decreases INVISIBLE!

1) Insert the hook under the front loop of the first single crochet stitch. Do not yarn
over.

2) Insert the hook under the front loop of the second stitch and pick it up onto the
hook (it won’t be easy at first and it will
take some time to get used to this move,
but the result is absolutely worth it!).
Yarn over.

3) Draw through the first two loops. Yarn

over and draw through all the loops.

5
How to finish an open piece
1) Pull the tail under the both loops of the first stitch of the previous row

2) Pull the tail back, under the FRONT loop of the last stitch of the row

How to close the opening

1) Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail, and fasten it off. Thread the yarn tail into a yarn
needle.
2) Insert the needle from the center and under the front loop only. Draw the yarn
through. Pick up all the remaining stitches the same way.
3) Grab the yarn and pull until the hole is tightly closed.
4) Make a double knot.
5) Exit the needle elsewhere on the work, pull the yarn tail taut, and snip it right against
the detail (the tail should disappear inside the detail).

Tips and information

Use a MARKER (I use thread of yarn): this will help you to keep track of the rounds and keep
your doll symmetrical. The beginning of the round should stay on the central line of the
detail. That is why sometimes you have to make some extra stitches – shift stitches.
The main idea of SHIFT STITCHES (adjustment stitches) is to save the symmetry of the toy. It
helps the central line of the detail to stay in its place.
If you need to make more/less shift stitches, than I do, to achieve that, please do.
Check my pictures and make sure your round starts from the same place as mine.
Remember, that shift stitch doesn’t change the number of stitches in the round, it just shifts
the beginning of the next round.

6
Pattern
SNOUT/HEAD
Use the pink yarn and a 2.5 mm crochet hook.
Crochet in spiral (in rounds).
Detail of a snout starts with two oval details, which you sew together and then proceed
crocheting around them.

OVAL 1:

0) Chain 5
1) Inc into the 2nd stitch from the hook, sc 2,
make 3 sc into the last stitch of a chain,
Turn over and start crocheting from another side of the chain: sc 2, sc 1
into the same stitch, where the first increase of the round was made
(see the first picture on the right) (10)

(See the illustration of the whole round –>)

2) Inc 2, sc 2, inc 3, sc 2, inc (16)

3) (Sc 1, inc)*2, sc 2, (sc 1, inc)*3, sc 3, inc (22)
4) (Sc 2, inc)*2, sc 2, (sc 2, inc)*3, sc 4, inc (28)
5) Sc 28 (28)
6) Sc 28 (28)
7) Sc 6, ss 1 into the first stitch of the round.
Finish as an open piece.

OVAL 2:

0) Chain 6
1) Inc into the 2nd stitch from the hook, sc 3, make 3 sc into the last stitch of a chain,
Turn over and start crocheting from another side of the chain: sc 3, sc 1 into the same stitch, where the first
increase of the round was made (12)
2) Inc 2, sc 3, inc 3, sc 3, inc (18)
3) (Sc 1, inc)*2, sc 3, (sc 1, inc)*3, sc 4, inc (24)
4) (Sc 2, inc)*2, sc 3, (sc 2, inc)*3, sc 5, inc (30)

7
Proceed with a “BRIDGE” between two ovals:
Crochet in rows (turn after each row).

0) Sc 1, ss 5, turn (6)
1) Ch 1, sc 5, leave one stitch unworked, turn (5)
2) Ch 1, sc 5, turn (5)
3) Ch 1, sc 5, turn (5) (see the picture below)
Finish as an open piece.

Sew the last round of the “bridge” with the last sc 5 of the last round of the “Oval 1” detail
(see the picture below)

Proceed with the SNOUT/HEAD:

1) Attach the yarn to the middle stitch of the

bridge (see the picture on the right), so “Oval
2” is on the right, and “Oval 1” is on left:

Sc 2 along the “bridge”, sc 1 into the last ss 1 of the “Oval 1”, sc 23 along the “Oval 1”, sc 3 along
the ‘bridge”, sc 25 along the “Oval 2”, sc 1 along the “bridge” (55) (see the picture
below)

(54) Make a shift stitch
16) Sc 54, Make 4 shift stitches, so the center of the detail shifts to the left (that move
twists the snout, so it turns more to the right) (see the picture below)

9
In the next rounds you are going to make “reinforcing ribs” that will help you to shape the
snout.
Look at the video how “reinforcing rib” are done: https://youtu.be/gkIDASn050Q

17) Sc 4, (inc, sc 5)*2, sc 1 with the back loop (BL) of the 2nd stitch to the left (see the

Close the opening

LEFT EAR (left, when looking at the dog)

Use the black yarn and a 2.0 mm crochet hook.
Crochet in spiral (in rounds). All the decreases in this detail are usual, NOT invisible.

Leave a long tail (about 15-20 cm) so you could use it to attach the ear to the head!

0) Ch 6 and join into a circle (6)

Now crochet the same number of stitches for 10 rounds:

1 –10) Sc 6
11) Inc 3, sc 3 (9)

Fold the detail and sew the remaining stitches together.

(see the picture of the finished detail above).

RIGHT EAR (right, when looking at the dog)

Use the black yarn and a 2.0 mm crochet hook.
Crochet in spiral (in rounds). All the decreases in this detail are usual, NOT invisible.

Leave a long tail (about 15-20 cm) so you could use it to attach the ear to the head!

0) Ch 6 and join into a circle (6)

Now crochet the same number of stitches for 10 rounds:
1 –10) Sc 6

11) (Sc 1, inc)*3 (9)

12) Sc 9
13) (Sc 3, inc)*2, sc 1 (11)
14) Sc 11
15) Sc 9, dec (10)

Now crochet the same number of stitches for 4 rounds:

Fold the detail and sew the remaining stitches together.
17
RIGHT ARM (1 piece)
Use the black and pink yarn and 2.5 mm crochet hook.
Start with the black yarn.
Crochet in rows (turn after each row). Ch 1 at the beginning of the row DOES NOT COUNT as
a stitch.

Look at the video how this detail is done: https://youtu.be/lFExsWnZbhg

0) Chain 15
1) Sc 1 into the 2nd stitch, sc 13 (finish the last stitch with the pink yarn), turn (14)
Proceed with the pink yarn.
2) Back loops only: Ch 1, sc 14, (finish the last stitch with the black yarn), turn (14)

Proceed with the black yarn.

3) Back loops only: Ch 1, ss 14 (14)

Now you are going to make PAWS by making puff stitches into the side of the detail:

• Ch 1, bring the black yarn to the back and change the color to pink: make puff stitch
(make 4 unfinished hdc st. (see “Abbreviations” section) into one stitch (point A
marked in the picture above), bring pink yarn to the back, and crochet all 4 hdc st.
together using black yarn) (see the left picture below). Ch 1 in black (see the middle
picture below).

• Ss 1 in black into the same point A. Ch 1 in black. Bring the black yarn to the back and
change the color to pink: make puff stitch (make 4 unfinished hdc st. (see
“Abbreviations” section) into the point A), bring pink yarn to the back, and crochet all
4 hdc st. together using black yarn).
Ch 1 in black (see the right picture below).

18
• Ss 1 in black into the same point A. Ch 1 in black. Bring the black yarn to the back and
change the color to pink: make puff stitch (make 4 unfinished hdc st. (see
“Abbreviations” section) into the point A, bring pink yarn to the back, and crochet all 4
hdc st. together using black yarn). Ch 1 in black.

• Ss 1 in black into the point A, ch 1.

Pull out a thread, leaving a long tail.

Insert it into a needle and sew the row 0) and row 3) together, so
the wrong side and all the tails of yarn remains inside this “tube”
(see the pictures)

Leave a long tail (about 15-20 cm) so you could use it to attach the arm to the body.

LEGS (and left arm) (3 pieces)

Crochet pattern of the legs
is the same as for the arm,
only rnd 3) is different:
3) BLO: Ch 1, inc, ss 12, inc (15)

Leave a long tail (about 15-20 cm) so you could

use it to attach the detail to the body.
NOTE! You may want to use a wire to make the legs bendable.

19
NOSE
Use the black yarn and 2.5 mm crochet hook.
Crochet in rows (turn after each row). Ch 1 at the beginning of the row DOES NOT COUNT as
a stitch.

0) Chain 18
1) Sc 1 into the 2nd stitch, sc 16, turn (17)
2) Ch 1, sc 17, turn (17)
3) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 14, skip 1, sc 1, turn (15)
4) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 12, skip 1, sc 1, turn (13)
5) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 10, skip 1, sc 1, turn (11)
6) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 8, skip 1, sc 1, turn (9)
7) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 6, skip 1, sc 1, turn (7)
8) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 4, skip 1, sc 1, turn (5)
9) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 2, skip 1, sc 1, turn (3)
10) Ch 1, skip 1, sc 2, DO NOT turn (2)

ATTENTION! Now you are going to start to crochet IN SPIRAL (no more turning to the other
side) along the edge of the detail rounds, counterclockwise. Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.

Look at the video how rounds 11), 12), 15)

are done: https://youtu.be/04UZMHEVYgI

11) Inc into the last stitch of the round 10), sc 7, Sc3into1, sc
18, Sc3into1, sc 7, Sc 3into1,
ss 2 (44)
(see the video above and the picture on the right)

12) Ch 1, sc 9, Sc3tog, sc 18, Sc3tog, sc 9, Sc3tog, ss 1 into

the ch 1 at the beginning of the round (40) (see the video above)
13) Ch 1, dec, sc 1, dec, sc 7, dec, sc 11, dec, sc 7, dec, sc 1, dec, skip 1 st, ss 1 into the ch 1 at
the beginning of the round (34)

15) Dec, sc 3, Sc5tog, sc 3, dec, sc 3, Sc5tog, ch 1, leave the round unfinished (18)
(see the video above)
Finish as an open piece. Leave a long tail (to sew the nose to the snout).
Stuff the nose with black thread of yarn.
Make a white stitch on the nose to imitate the patch of light.
20
TEETH
This detail is made of three parts (one – black, two – yellow-white).

BLACK PART:
Use the black yarn and 2.5 mm crochet hook.
Crochet in rows (turn after each row). Ch 1 at the beginning of the row DOES NOT COUNT as
a stitch.

0) Chain 9
1) Inc into the 2nd stitch from the hook, sc 7, turn (9)
2) Ch 1, sc 9 (9)
3) Ch 1, sc 8, inc (10)
4) Ch 1, sc 9, inc (11)

Assembling
About marked stitches
If you see, that the stitches you have marked during crochet process (*) are located in
inadequate places, then ignore them and attach body parts (ears, arms, legs, tail) as you see
it. This may happen, if the shape of your single crochet stitch is different from mine (more
prolonged, for example) or if you have ignored some of the shift stitches in the pattern.

About whipstitch
The whipstitch is best for joining crocheted rows.
You join the crochet pieces by whip stitching the row-end (BOTH LOOPS) of the open piece -
>
to the single crochet stitches (that go directly UNDER) of a closed piece.
NB! Draw the yarn very tight after every stitch!
