PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT
1. A glass plate of dielectric constant K totally fills up the gap between the electrodes of a
parallel-plate capacitor whose capacitance in the absence of that glass plate is equal to C = 20
F. The capacitor is connected to a de voltage source V = 100V. The plate is slowly, and
without friction, extracted from the gap. Find the change in energy of capacitor and the
mechanical work performed in the process of plate extraction.
2. A small drop of mercury of radius r lies on a shallow metal disc connected to a steady voltage
source V. The drop is then broken into n droplets on the dish. Find the extra charge drawn from
the voltage source.
3. A soap bubble of radius R and thickness t is charged to a potential V. The bubble bursts and
falls as a spherical drop. Determine the potential of the drop.
4. Three cylindrical shells of radii a, b and c (a < b < c) length L, have charge +q, +q/2 and q.
Determine the capacity of system between inner and outer cylinders.
5. Two concentric spherical shells have radii a and b, the charge on the shells is +q and q
respectively. The space between shells is field with two dielectrics of constant K1 and K2. Each
dielectric occupies half the thickness available. Find the capacity of the system between
innermost and outermost spheres
