A Funny Festival
La Tomatina is the largest food fight festival in the world, with around 20,000 locals and
tourists participating each year. It takes place in the Valencian town of Bunol in Spain on the
last Wednesday of August. It is a festival, in which people throw tons of ripe and squashed
tomatoes at each other just for fun. The origins of this mass tomato battle date back to a fight
among children in 1945 and it has been celebrated every year since then.
The farmers near Bunol grow a lot of tomatoes. In summer there are too many tomatoes to sell.
So the people of Bunol have an unusual way of using them. Every year, one day in August is
called “Tomatina.” In the morning, the shopkeepers in Bunol put plastic covers over their shops.
They do not want their shops to be covered with tomato juice. A big crowd of people comes
into town to take part in this festival. People wear old clothes since they get covered with
tomato juice. The trucks bring about 125,000 kg of tomatoes.
People enjoy throwing tomatoes at each other. They also enjoy being hit by tomatoes. When
tomatoes hit people, they get covered with tomato juice. Soon everyone is red and everyone
starts having a lot of fun!
After about one hour, everyone stops throwing tomatoes. The streets of Bunol are covered with
tomato juice. The people wash the streets and soon all the tomato juice is gone. Tomatina is
finished for another year, but next August the farmers will have a lot of tomatoes again. It will
be Tomatina time again!
