Fluid Mechanics Practice questions:

Laminar flow through circular conduits:

1. An oil of viscosity 9 poise and specific gravity 0.9 is flowing through a horizontal
pipe of 60 mm diameter. If the pressure drop in 100 m length of the pipe is 1800 kN/m2,
determine:
(i) The rate of flow of oil;
(ii) The centre-line velocity;
(iii) The total frictional drag over 100 m length;
(iv) The power required to maintain the flow;
(v) The velocity gradient at the pipe wall;
(vi) The velocity and shear stress at 8 mm from the wall.
(Ans: Q=0.00636 m3/s, umax= 4.5 m/s, Frictional drag=5089 N, Power required to
maintain flow= 11.45 kW, velocity gradient= 300-1, velocity and shear stress at 8
mm from wall= 2.08, 198 kN/m2)

2. Oil of absolute viscosity 1.5 poise and density 848.3 kg/m3 flows through a 30 cm I.D. pipe.
If the head loss in 3000 m length of pipe is 20 m, assuming a laminar flow, determine (i)
the velocity, (ii) Reynolds number. (Ans: Velocity=1.04 m/s, Re=1764.5)

3. A crude oil of viscosity 0.9 poise and relative density 0.9 is flowing through a horizontal
circular pipe of diameter 120 mm and length 12 m. Calculate the difference of pressure at
the two ends of the pipe, if 785 N of the oil is collected in a tank in 25 seconds. (Ans: p1 –
p2= 753.6 N/m2)

4. A liquid with a specific gravity of 2.8 and a viscosity of 0.8 poise flows through a smooth
pipe of unknown diameter, resulting in a pressure drop of 800 N/m2 in 2 km length of the
pipe. What is the pipe diameter if the mass flow rate is 2500 kg/h. (Ans; D=0.212 m).

5. A lubricating oil of viscosity 1 poise and specific gravity 0.9 is pumped through a 30 mm
diameter pipe. If the pressure drop per metre length of pipe is 20 kN/m2, determine:
(i) The mass flow rate in kg/min,
(ii) The shear stress at the pipe wall,
(iii) The Reynolds number of flow, and
(Ans; 214.65 kg/min, 150 N/m2, 1518.7)
6. In a pipe of diameter 350 mm and length 75 m water is flowing at a velocity of
2·8 m/s. Find the head lost due to friction using: Darcy-Weisbach formula. Assume
kinematic viscosity of water as 0·012 stoke. (Ans: 0.9 m)
7. In a pipe of 300 mm diameter and 800 m length an oil of specific gravity 0·8 is
flowing at the rate of 0·45 m3/s. Find: (i) Head lost due to friction, and (ii) Power required
to maintain the flow. Take kinematic viscosity of oil as 0·3 stoke. (Ans; hf= 109.72 m,
P=387·48 kW)
8. The difference in water surface levels in two tanks, which are connected by three pipes in
series of lengths 300 m, 170 m and 210 m and of diameters 300 mm, 200 mm and 400 mm
respectively, is 12 m. Determine the rate of flow of water if co-efficient of friction are .005,
.0052 and .0048 respectively, considering : (i) minor losses also (ii) neglecting minor losses.
(Ans: (Considering Minor Losses) 99.45 litres/s, Neglecting Minor Losses; Q=102.1
litres/s))

9. Three pipes of 400 mm, 200 mm and 300 mm diameters have lengths of 400 m, 200 m, and
300 m respectively. They are connected in series to make a compound pipe. The ends of
this compound pipe are connected with two tanks whose difference of water levels is 16 m.
If co-efficient of friction for these pipes is same and equal to 0.005, determine the discharge
through the compound pipe neglecting first the minor losses and then including them. (Ans
(Neglecting minor loss, Q=0.1108 m3/s, Considering minor loss Q=0.1085 m3/s.))

10. The main pipe divides into two parallel pipes which again forms one pipe as
shown in Figure (a). The data is as follows:
First parallel pipe: Length = 1000 m, diameter = 0·8 m
Second parallel pipe: Length = 1000 m, diameter = 0·6 m
Co-efficient of friction for each parallel pipe = 0·005
If the total rate of flow in the main is 2m3/s find the rate of flow in each parallel pipe.
(Ans Q1= 1 342 m3/s, Q2= 0·658 m3/s)
