TOPIC FORCES THAT AFFECT CHANGES ON THE EARTH SURFACE DUE
TO EARTHQUAKE AND VOLCANIC ERUPTION
TIME FRAME 60 Minutes
LESSON At the end of the lesson, pupils are expected to:
OBJECTIVES a. describe the changes on the Earth’s surface as a
result
b. of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
design an emergency plan and kit
c. appreciate the changes on the earth's surface as a
result of earthquake and volcanic eruption

REVIEW

 Shows a variety of pictures of Simple Machines

 Identify what are the types of Simple Machine shown
below.

- Lever

- Wheel and Axle

- Inclined Plane

- Screw

- Pulley

- Wedge
ACTIVITY
Idea-blas and Idea-drop Activity
Write your idea about Earthquake inside the clouds and
your ideas about Volcanic Eruption in the raindrops.
ANALYSIS
Ask pupils the following questions:

 What do you call a rumbling, shaking or rolling

of the Earth's surface? It can be felt as shock
under your feet or may be very powerful and
destructive enough to flatten an entire city.
 It is when lava and gas are released from a
volcano—sometimes explosively.
ABSTRACTION  Show the picture below to the class. Ask them what
they see in the picture.

 Introduce the class to Earthquake and Volcanic

Eruption.
Earthquake is the shaking of the ground,
It happens when crustal plates move. It may push
towards each other or away from each other.

Two types of Earthquake

 Tectonic Earthquake - caused by the movement
of the earth's crusts.
 Volcanic Earthquake - happens with a strong
volcanic eruption.
 Ask the class how do they think Earthquake
measured?
Earthquake can be measured through its
magnitude and intensity.
Magnitude- refers to the amount of the energy by
an earthquake.
Intensity- refers to the effect of an earthquake
especially the damages
Effects of Earthquake
High magnitude and long shaking during an
earthquake can damage building and bridges.

Ground Rupture - breaking and displacement of

earth surface, it can destroy the structures in the
area.

Landslide - Ground shaking; loose rocks

and soils which causes the rock and soil to slide in
area below the mountain.
Tsunami - A huge wave produce when
Earthquake occurs under the sea. the sudden
movement of rocks of the rocks produces a shock
waves through the water above it and makes a
powerful wave
What is a Volcano?
A volcano is an opening in the earth's surface
crust where lava, molten rocks, ashes and
gaseous materials are forced through-out its
opening known as Crater.

How does Volcanic Eruption occur?

Inside a volcano is a magma chamber where
molten rocks are forcefully driven by intense heat
and pressure. The release of magma from the
crater is known as VOLCANIC ERUPTION.
Kinds of Volcanic Eruption

HARMFUL EFFECTS
 Cause damage to plants, animals, people
and property.
 Trigger earthquakes
 Cause health problems
POSITIVE EFFECTS
 Generate Electricity
 Produce Industrial Materials
 Make soil fertile
 Help Scientists study Earth's Interior
Compare Volcanic Eruption and Earthquake. Write it
APPLICATION/ on your journal.
ASSESSMENT

Let’s have a quiz!

c. intensity d. focus
3. When do earthquakes happen?
a. when crustal plates move
b. when there is too much heat inside the earth
c. when crustal plates mix
d. when there is changing temperature
4. What layer of the earth is made up of tectonic
plates?
a. crust b. mantle
c. core d. inner core
5. Where is Mayon Volcano located?

b. Seismograph
c. Volcanic Eruption
d. Explosive Eruption
10. When lava just flows out on a crater,it is called ____.
a. Explosive eruption
b. Nonexplosive eruption
c. Crust
d. Mantle
CLOSURE Facts to remember!

 Earthquakes are the shaking, rolling or sudden shock

of the earth's surface. They are the Earth's natural
means of releasing stress.
 The primary effects of earthquakes are landslides,
ground rupture, and ground shaking worst is tsunami.
 Earthquakes can do significant damage to buildings,
bridges, pipelines, railways, embankments, dams,
and other structures.
 A volcanic eruption is when lava and gas are
released from a volcano.

Give your pupils an assignment.

 Design a preparedness plan and kit that could be
helpful during and after emergency. Write your
plans and draw your first-aid kits on your journal.
