a. Define an earthquake and volcanic eruption, how they occur, and their effects on the
Earth's surface.
b. Recognize the importance of understanding earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
c. Performs activity that represent Earthquake and Volcanic Eruption

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Changes on the Earth’s Surface as a result of Earthquakes and Volcanic Eruptions
b. Instructional Materials: Desktop or Laptop, MS Powerpoint, Printed Materials, Bowl,
cup, aluminium foil, baking soda, vinegar, -Marbles, cardboard, box, and bottle with
sand.
c. Reference: K to 12 Curriculum Guide S6ES-Iva-1
III. Procedure
Teachers Activities
A. Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Energizer
 Checking of attendance
 Classroom management
 Review

C. Lesson Proper
a. Activity

(Shows a video about earthquake and volcanic eruption)

b. Analysis

 What have you noticed on the video?

 What do you think happened?

c. Abstract
 What is an earthquake and volcanic eruption?

Earthquake
- An earthquake is the sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by movements in
the Earth's crust.

(Shows video about the cause of Earthquakes)

Violent Earthquakes are triggered when two plates slide past each other.

There are two types of Earthquake:

1. Volcanic Earthquake –it is the shaking of the grounds that happens when there is
a strong volcanic eruptions.
2. Tectonic Earthquake -It is caused by the movement of Earth’s crust or crustal
plate. It may occur above the ground or beneath the ocean.

 The effects of earthquakes on the Earth's surface :

1. Cracking and Faulting: Earthquakes create cracks or faults, shifting the land.
2. Ground Shifting: Shaking moves the ground, displacing structures.
3. Landslides: Shaking triggers landslides, moving rocks and soil.
4. Tsunamis: Underwater earthquakes can cause tsunamis, flooding coastal areas.

Volcanic Eruption
- A volcanic eruption is the release of magma, ash, and gases from a volcano.

( Shows video how volcanic eruption occurs)

The effects of volcanic eruptions on the Earth's surface:

1. New Landforms: Lava creates new land, such as islands or mountains.
2. Crater Formation: Explosive eruptions form craters or calderas.
3. Lava Flows: Lava destroys land, creating plains or rocks.
4. Ash Fallout: Ash covers land, affecting soil and cities.
5. Changes to Water: Volcanic eruptions can create or fill water bodies.
6. Atmospheric Changes: Eruptions can cause temporary weather changes.

 How important is it to be knowledgeable about earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and

their effects on the Earth's surface?

-Knowing about earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and how they change the Earth's
surface is important because it helps keep people safe, prepare for disasters, and
understand the damage, like cracks and landslides. This knowledge helps people
respond quickly and protect lives and property.

Effects of an Ea

d. Application

Instructions: The class will be divided into two groups, and each group will be given
materials. Each group must demonstrate either an earthquake or a volcanic eruption. They
will explain their models while showing the effects on landforms.

Earthquake (materials):

-Marbles, cardboard, box, and bottle with sand

Procedure: Place three marbles in the box, then put a piece of cardboard on top of the
marbles. Stand a bottle filled with sand on the cardboard and start to move it.
Observe what happens.

Volcanic Eruption (materials):

-Bowl, cup, aluminum foil, baking soda, vinegar

Procedure: Place the cup inside the bowl and cover both with aluminum foil. Cut a
hole in the foil above the cup, then put the baking soda and add some vinegar inside
the cup. Notice what happened.
VI. Assessment

Grade 5:

Direction: Read the sentence and identify if it is true or false. Write your answer on the
blank.

1. Earthquakes can only occur on land, not underwater.

2. Volcanic eruptions release magma, ash, and gases from a volcano.
3. Tectonic earthquakes are caused by the movement of the Earth's crustal plates.
4. Lava from a volcanic eruption immediately turns into solid rock.
5. Earthquakes can trigger landslides, causing the movement of rocks and soil.
6. Volcanic eruptions only create damage to land, not to the atmosphere.
7. Tsunamis can be triggered by underwater earthquakes.
8. A volcanic eruption can form new landforms, such as islands or mountains.
9. Earthquakes only affect the Earth’s surface and not the underlying layers.
10. Knowing about earthquakes and volcanic eruptions helps in disaster
preparedness and safety.

Grade 6:

Directions: Read each question carefully and choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. What causes an earthquake?

a) Heavy rainfall

b) Crater formation
c) Cloud formation
d) Water pollution
4. What happens when an underwater earthquake occurs?
a) It creates a crater
b) It triggers a tsunami
c) It melts ice caps
d) It forms mountains
5. What is released during a volcanic eruption?
a) Only smoke
b) Magma, ash, and gases
c) Rain and wind
d) Sand and dust
6. How do volcanic eruptions create new landforms?
a) By eroding rocks
b) By cooling lava into solid rock
c) By washing away soil
d) By breaking apart mountains
7. Which of the following is NOT an effect of a volcanic eruption?
