competent in this unit of competency.
This assessment task is a Skills Test.
This assessment task consists of four (4) practical demonstration activities.
Activity 1: Plan and prepare to perform calculations to determine material
requirements
Activity 2: Calculate the area and volume of construction materials for the project.
Activity 3: Calculate the requirements for construction for the project.
Activity 4: Check and record results.
You will receive your feedback within two (2) weeks, and you will be notified by your
trainer/assessor when your results are available.
You must attempt all activities of the project for your trainer/assessor to assess your
competence in this assessment task.
Applicable conditions:
This skill test is untimed and is conducted as an open book assessment (this means you
are able to refer to your textbook or other learner materials during the test).
You will be assessed independently on this assessment task.
No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be
Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.
As you complete this assessment task, you are predominately demonstrating your skills,
techniques and knowledge to your trainer/assessor.
Your trainer/assessor may ask you relevant questions during this assessment task
Where a student’s answers are deemed not satisfactory after the first attempt, a

The purpose of this assessment task is to assess the student’s knowledge and skills essential to
perform construction calculations to determine carpentry material requirements in a range of
contexts and industry settings.
Task instructions
This is an individual assessment.
This assessment task requires the student to perform construction calculations to
determine carpentry material requirements.
The student is required to complete the following four (4) activities in this assessment
task:
o Activity 1: Plan and prepare to perform calculations to determine material
requirements
o Activity 2: Calculate the area and volume of construction materials for the project.
o Activity 3: Calculate the requirements for construction for the project.

You will be required to complete all parts of this assessment task.
The templates for each activity are provided along with this assessment task.
The student must comply with the written and verbal reporting requirements and
procedures.
The trainer/assessor will provide the details regarding the timeframe to conduct the
levelling operations.
The student must follow the instructions of the trainer/assessor (Supervisor).
The trainer/assessor must assess the performance of the student as per the performance
checklist provided and verbal questioning.
This assessment task requires the student to perform construction calculations to determine carpentry
material requirements. To do so, you will be required to complete the following activities:
Activity 2: Calculate the area and volume of construction materials for the project.
Workplace scenario:
You are working as a carpenter in a construction company. You have received a project to perform
construction calculations to determine carpentry material requirements. The following are the job
specifications of the client related to carrying out masonry veneer construction:
a candidate must meet the performance criteria of this unit by analysing the drawings and
specifications for a building with a minimum of 6 rooms, including a kitchen and bathroom and
linear external lining, and preparing a detailed list of materials and calculated quantities of each
material for:
The training organisation will take you to the location of the construction worksite.
Further, the training organisation must ensure the construction site must meet the requirements given
in the table below.
The student must analyse the drawings and specifications for a building
with a minimum of 6 rooms, including a kitchen and bathroom and linear
external lining, and preparing a detailed list of materials and calculated
quantities of each material for:
The training organisation must provide the student with drawings and
specifications for a single storey or two-storey building.
The building must have:
A minimum of 6 rooms
At the construction worksite, the student will perform construction calculations to determine carpentry
material requirements
You must carefully analyse the information given in the ‘drawings and specifications’ before initiating
the work.
The trainer will supervise/observe the work by standing near the working location. The student will be
required to bring all necessary PPE’s required to complete this activity.
Calculator
Measuring tape
Steel tapes
Scale rules
Task requirements
The trainer/assessor will also verbally ask each student a series of questions during the student’s
performance of each task. These questions are designed to assess the knowledge students are
employing in the performance of the task.
The trainer/assessor will mark the student’s responses to verbal questions on the verbal questions
record sheet included in the student’s assessment pack.
The trainer/assessor must provide a verbal briefing on each assessment prior to commencement. Each
specific task is described in more detail below.
As part of your job role, you will have the following responsibilities:
For a construction project, look over the designs, specifications, and workplace requirements.
Plan all work to comply with laws and regulations, the National Construction Code (NCC),
Australian Standards, work health and safety (WHS) and environmental standards,
manufacturer's specifications, workplace requirements, drawings and specifications, and
manufacturers' specifications.
Examine the project's designs and requirements to determine the measurements of each type of
building material.
Calculate the total area of the building wrap as well as the total area of each form of exterior
cladding.
Calculate the amount of materials needed for wall and roof framing.
Calculate the dimensions and number of sheets of each type of flooring and lining material to
ensure the most cost-effective arrangement.
Calculate the length of linear flooring and lining material, making sure to use the most cost-
effective pattern.
Calculate the dimensions and amount of external cladding sheets to ensure the most cost-
effective arrangement is used.
Calculate the length of linear external cladding material to provide the most cost-effective
arrangement.
Calculate the dimensions and amount of roofing sheets or units, ensuring that the most cost-
effective arrangement is used and that overlaps are allowed.
Keep track of your progress and double-check your calculations for correctness.
Calculation results should be recorded as needed for costing and ordering materials.
Observe the student performing each activity and assess them against the observation checklist
provided after each activity.
This assessment task requires the student to perform construction calculations to determine carpentry
material requirements.
Activity 2: Calculate the area and volume of construction materials for the project.
When carrying out the activities mentioned above, you must follow the instructions provided by your
trainer/assessor (Supervisor).
This activity requires you to plan and prepare to Perform construction calculations to determine
carpentry material requirements.
This activity must be completed in accordance with the outcomes of Activity 1-Activity 3.
While completing each step, you must place a tick mark against each step given in the checklist once
completed.
Your trainer/assessor (Supervisor) will observe you performing this activity and sign off the checklist
after completing each step.

Step 3: Calculate the building wrap's total area and each type of external
cladding material.
Instructions:
Building wraps are installed at the exterior of the building so consider the
exterior walls of the building.
Name the wall by giving different abbreviations such as Wall 1, Wall 2,
Wall 3, Wall 4……. Or Wall A, Wall B, C, D, ……. etc
Calculate the area of each wall.
Subtract the opening if any present for the respective walls.
