1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard specification covers the selection and installation of materials for the
insulation of piping and equipment used in hot services in onshore production facilities and
addresses insulation and wire-netting for heat retention and personnel protection.

1.2 Within this specification the following definitions shall apply:

COMPANY: Al Furat Petroleum Company

CONTRACTOR: The Contractor selected by COMPANY to perform the project of which

the supply of the equipment covered by this specification forms part.

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

2.l Insulation shall be installed on piping and equipment where process conditions
require heat retention (e.g. hot oil systems).

Protection of personnel by either insulation or wire netting is required where non-insulated

surface temperatures would exceed 70 C and surfaces are within reach of personnel:

 At bare wall temperatures between 70 and 120 C, expanded metal sheets, wire
cages, handrails or other physical barriers or hazard marking shall be used. Wire
cages shall be of galvanized steel wire netting with a minimum separation from the
hot surface of 30 mm (see Appendix 1). The separation shall be maintained by
means of gusset plates, 1 per 100 mm of circumference (with a minimum of 4)
mounted on steel rings spaced at a maximum distance of 1 m (see Appendix 1).

 Above 120 C insulation shall be applied in accordance with this specification. Flanges, flanged
fittings, unions, valves, relief valves, control valves and pumps in insulated runs of pipe
shall be shielded for personnel protection with aluminum sheeting guards in accordance
with Table III attached, unless otherwise specified. All welded and screwed fittings in
insulated lines, except those indicated above, shall be insulated.

Personnel protection of either type shall be applied where hot surfaces are within 1 m of
any walkway, ladder or stairway from the point of access to a height of 2 m above such
points of access. Un-insulated flanges, valves, etc., within these limits shall be covered in
accordance with Table III.

2.2 No insulation shall be applied to piping or equipment until the piping or equipment
has been thoroughly cleaned, pressure tested, all leaks located and repaired, and the
specified paint system applied. Insulating materials and the surfaces they are applied to
shall be clean and dry.

2.3 Instrument connections shall not be covered with insulation.

2.4 The insulation at un-insulated flanges shall be terminated a sufficient distance

from the flanges to allow removal of flange bolts without damage to the insulation. Ends
shall be cut on a 45o bevel to the pipe and sealed off with the metal jacket (beveled). The
joint between the metal jacked and the pipe shall be sealed with insulation cement.

2.5 Manufacturers' equipment and code name plates shall not be covered by
insulation. If necessary, edges shall be beveled and sealed as in section 2.5 above.

2.6 Insulation supports, anchor nuts etc. shall be welded to equipment and piping prior
to stress relieving where such is required. No welding on piping or equipment after stress
relieving will be permitted without COMPANY's written approval.

2.7 Where insulation support rings have been provided on vertical vessels or long
vertical piping, insulation thickness shall extend 15 mm beyond outer edge of support
rings. A 25 mm space under the support ring, packed with glass blanket material, shall be
provided to accommodate vessel or pipe expansion and contraction.

2.8 Lines containing stagnant liquids, or small bore lines with low flow rates, e.g.
(automatic) drain lines , chemical injection lines, blind ended lines, diesel fuel lines etc.,
shall be lagged and heat traced to prevent freezing, solidifying, hydrate or wax formation
during low ambient temperatures,
.
Instrument items and impulse lines shall be heat traced in accordance with
COMPANY’s relevant instrumentation standards.

2.9 Large diameter fired heater heat box flanges shall be shielded with 0.3 mm thick 316
stainless steel shield secured with stainless steel bands. Shields must not touch flange
surface.

3. MATERIALS

3.l The thickness of insulation shall comply with Table I.

3.2 Insulation material shall be selected from Table II.

4. INSTALLATION

4.l Insulation shall be installed in accordance with Table III, the manufacturer's
instructions, and with good installation practices.

4.2 CONTRACTOR shall submit detailed installation specification to COMPANY for

review prior to insulation work.

NOTES:

l. The above tables are based on an insulating material having approximate thermal conductivity
values of 0.75 W/m.oC at 100 oC and 1 W/m.oC at 300 oC mean temperature.
2. The above tables do not include the insulating effect of final coverings which can be expected to
further reduce insulation surface temperatures.
3. Insulation for heat conservation above 250 oC and/or where insulation thickness required
exceeds 65 mm shall be applied in double or multiple layers. All block insulation shall be applied
in double or multiple layers.
4. Insulating material shall be calcium silicate or fiberglass. Fiberglass shall not be used in services
over 300 C.
