THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SOFTNESS: LIP BALM
FORMULATION BASICS
Have you ever stopped and wondered, "What makes my lip balm so smooth and
moisturising?" Well, it all boils down to a science-art combo known as formulation. Simply
put, formulation is the precise combination and measurement of ingredients that make up a
product - in our case, the lip balm.
At the heart of any lip balm, you'll find three major components: the oil phase, the wax
phase, and the additives phase.
The oil phase forms the base of your lip balm. This is where the moisturizing magic happens.
Ingredients in this phase include oils like jojoba, sweet almond, and coconut oil. These oils
are chosen for their excellent moisturizing properties, and they give your lip balm that soft,
smooth texture. They're also packed with nutrients that can help nourish your lips.
Next up is the wax phase. This phase gives your lip balm its structure, ensuring it doesn't just
melt away as soon as you apply it. Beeswax is a popular choice in this phase, as it provides
excellent structure while also attracting moisture to keep your lips hydrated.
Lastly, we have the additives phase. This is your chance to get creative! The additives phase
can include anything from shea butter for extra moisturization, to vitamin E for its
antioxidant properties, to essential oils for fragrance and flavor.

CREATING THE PERFECT BLEND: BALANCING YOUR LIP
BALM FORMULATION
It's all about finding that sweet spot where all the ingredients come together to create the
perfect lip balm - one that's smooth, hydrating, and has just the right amount of slip.
Remember, formulation is both a science and an art. While it's crucial to be precise with
your measurements, it's also important to have fun and experiment. Maybe you prefer your

lip balm a bit firmer, or perhaps you love the scent of lavender essential oil. The beauty of
making your own lip balm is that you can tweak and customize it to fit your personal
preference.
First, you'll need to melt your chosen wax and oil together. A double boiler is perfect for this
– just remember to stir the mixture constantly to avoid any clumps. Then, once everything is
well combined, you can add your flavor or fragrance.

But before you pour the mixture into your lip balm tubes or pots, you need to check the
consistency. So, cool a small amount on a spoon and test it on your lips. Does it glide on
smoothly? Is it firm enough to hold its shape? Don't worry if it's not perfect – just adjust the
ratio of wax to oil until you get it just right.
Once you're satisfied with the formula, pour it into your containers and let it cool
completely. Then, voila – you have your very own homemade organic lip balm!
And, most importantly, have fun with it! Because at the end of the day, the most satisfying
part of organic lip balm formulation is not just creating a fantastic product, but also the joy
and fulfillment that comes from the process.

Oil Phase Jojoba Oil Emollient 27
Seed Oil
Instructions:
1. Oil Phase: In a heat-resistant container, combine jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, and
coconut oil.
2. Wax Phase: In a separate heat-resistant container, combine beeswax and carnauba
wax.
3. Heat both the oil phase and wax phase containers using a double boiler setup until the
ingredients melt completely. Stir gently to ensure they combine well.
4. Once melted, remove both containers from heat. Gradually add the oil phase into the
wax phase while stirring continuously. This helps to achieve a homogeneous mixture.
5. Allow the mixture to cool down to around 40-45°C, stirring occasionally to prevent the
formation of lumps.
6. Once cooled, add shea butter, vitamin E oil, peppermint essential oil, and vanilla
extract to the mixture. Stir well to ensure even distribution of additives.
7. Pour the lip balm mixture into suitable chapstick tubes.
8. Let the lip balm cool and solidify completely before use. It's best to leave it overnight to
ensure it has fully set.

Why we have used these ingredients?
Oil Phase:
1. Jojoba Oil: This oil is very similar to the natural oil our skin produces, which makes it
highly moisturizing and easy for the skin to absorb. By increasing the percentage of
jojoba oil, we're ensuring that your lip balm is super hydrating.
2. Sweet Almond Oil: Sweet almond oil is packed with vitamins A and E, Omega-3 fatty
acids, and zinc. It's excellent for soothing and repairing dry, chapped lips. Increasing
the percentage of sweet almond oil in this formulation enhances the nourishing
properties of the lip balm.
3. Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is a great moisturizer and is known to protect your skin from
environmental damage. In this formulation, it complements the properties of jojoba oil
and sweet almond oil, rounding out the oil phase of your lip balm.
Wax Phase:
1. Beeswax: Beeswax is primarily used to solidify the oils, creating a stable lip balm. It
also acts as a humectant, attracting water molecules and helping to keep your lips
hydrated.
2. Carnauba Wax: This plant-based wax is a bit harder than beeswax and is used to give
your lip balm some additional structure. It helps ensure your lip balm doesn't melt easily
in hot weather and provides a glossy finish.
Additives Phase:
1. Shea Butter: Shea butter is incredibly nourishing, thanks to its high content of natural
vitamins and fatty acids. Increasing the percentage of shea butter in this formulation
helps make the lip balm even more moisturizing, which is perfect for dry lips.
2. Vitamin E Oil: This is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect your lips from
environmental damage. It also prolongs the shelf life of your lip balm by preventing the
oils from going rancid.
3. Peppermint Essential Oil: Peppermint oil is refreshing and has a cooling effect on the
skin. It's important to use it sparingly as it can be irritating in higher concentrations.
4. Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract is used primarily for its pleasant scent, giving your lip
balm a hint of vanilla fragrance.

How to package?
The best suitable packaging for the organic lip balm formulated above would be a lip balm
tube or chapstick tube.
Ease of Application: Lip balm tubes, also known as chapstick tubes, have a mechanism
that easily pushes the product up when you need it and retracts it when you're done.
This makes the product easy to apply, even without a mirror.
Portability: Lip balm tubes are compact and lightweight. They can fit into a pocket,
purse, or bag without taking up much space, making them perfect for on-the-go
application.
Protection: A lip balm tube provides good protection to the product inside. It shields
the lip balm from direct sunlight, heat, and bacteria, helping to preserve the product's
quality and extend its shelf life.
Hygiene: Since lip balm tubes don't require users to dip their fingers into the product,
they're a more hygienic option, especially when you're out and about.
When choosing a lip balm tube, you can consider eco-friendly options such as tubes made
from recycled materials or biodegradable materials like paper or cardboard. Many brands
are now choosing sustainable packaging options to reduce their environmental impact.
Happy formulation...
