GEOINFOMATICS AND SURVEYING
GSV 551
ASSIGNMENT: Given 2 map scales viz: 1:5,000 and 1:100,000, which of these is a small-scale map?
Give reasons for your answer and hence write a short note on the uses of small and large-scale maps.
ANSWER: The map with scale of 1:100,000 is a small-scale map due to the following reasons;
1. The ratio of the distance unit on the chart to the actual distance on the surface of the Earth covers
a larger surface area. This means that 1 unit on the map is equivalent to 100,000 units on the
ground or earth surface
1
2. Scales are representative fractions, this implies that 1:5,000 and 1:100,000 are and
5,000
1
respectively. Following linear operational rules, the larger the denominator of a
100,000
fraction, the smaller the resulting quotient, this rule makes 1:100,000 the small-scale map due to a
relatively small representative fraction
3. The area of detail covered per unit within the map is minute because the corresponding ground
ratio is large, so objects and images perceived on the map would appear smaller than they are and
small sized details might remain in obscurity (e.g. World/Country maps)

USES OF SMALL- AND LARGE-SCALE MAPS

Uses of Large-Scale Maps
1. Urban Planning and Development: Detailed layout of streets, buildings, parks, and utilities,
zoning regulations, land use planning, and property boundaries.
2. Construction and Engineering: Site plans for buildings, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure
projects with precise topographic information for terrain analysis and project design.
3. Property and Land Management: Real estate transactions, property surveys, and boundary
disputes inclusive of agricultural planning, field layouts and irrigation systems.
4. Utilities and Infrastructure Management: Mapping of water, sewer, electricity, and
telecommunication networks with maintenance and upgrading of infrastructure with detailed
asset locations.
5. Environmental Management: Detailed mapping of natural features, such as forests, wetlands, and
waterways plus the monitoring and management of these protected areas and wildlife habitats.
6. Emergency Services: Detailed maps for fire departments, police, and emergency responders to
navigate urban areas quickly and efficiently and the planning for disaster response and evacuation
routes
7. Transportation Planning: Detailed layout of transportation networks, including roads, railways,
and pedestrian pathways. It also aids in the planning and development of public transportation
systems.
Uses of Small-Scale Maps
1. Regional Planning and Development: Overview of large geographic areas for regional
development strategies. Planning of transportation networks and infrastructure at a regional level.
2. National and International Mapping: Country or continent-wide maps for political,
administrative, and geographic purposes. International boundary delineation and geopolitical
analysis.
3. Tourism and Travel: Road maps for long-distance travel and navigation. Tourist maps
highlighting major attractions, routes, and amenities over large areas.
4. Military and Defense: Strategic planning and analysis of large geographic regions. Coordination
of large-scale military operations and logistics.
5. Education and Research: Geographic education, providing students with an overview of
countries, continents, and the world. Research involving large-scale environmental patterns,
climate zones, and global phenomena.
6. Resource Management: Management and exploration of natural resources like minerals, oil, and
gas over large areas. Environmental conservation and management at a regional or national level.
7. Aviation and Maritime Navigation: Air navigation charts for pilots covering wide areas for route
planning. Nautical charts for maritime navigation across oceans and large water bodies.
8. Census and Demographic Studies: Mapping population distribution, density, and demographic
trends over large areas. Planning and analysis of public services and resource allocation.
