READING COMPREHENTION UNITS 1-3

MY MOST MEMORABLE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE . By Nisa

I have been travelling all my life. During my childhood I spent most of my time on the
African continent and ever since then, the travel-fever struck me. Today I’m 25 years old and
still trying to get around as much as possible. I have visited over 70 countries and I’m
planning to see many more. In 1995 my mom decided to take me out of elementary school for
a year to travel to Indonesia. She has always wanted to go there and decided that this was a
good (and easy) time to take me out of school (since I was only in 3rd grade).
Our travels took us to Flores, Komodo & Timor before we decided to visit Sulawesi. My
mom loved (and still does) travelling off the beaten path, so the Togian Islands where the
right destination for us. Togian is situated right in the middle of the Sulawesi “mouth” and
getting there was far from easy: First we had to fly to Mandao, then down to Gorontalo and
from there we went on a 6-7 hours boat ride. But it was all worth it!
Togian is paradise as you know it: White sandy beaches, palm trees, crystal clean blue
water and no tourist in sight. It’s also a real diver’s delight with some of the most amazing
reefs. We’ve been to Togian three times, last in 1998 so I don’t know if this is still the case
today. Anyway, we stayed for about three weeks and not only did I make friends for life but I
also started my acting career, Some Indonesian movie was being filmed there and I guess the
director quickly made a chance in the script … Quite an experience.

READING COMPREHENTION UNITS 4-6

When you’re home, you are master of your domain. You control what comes into the kitchen
and what lands on your children’s plates. But what happens when you’re not at home - when you’re
traveling, fighting traffic, waiting at the airport, running late or stuck at the mall and your child is
starving? The fear of drive through and fast food restaurants has been drilled into most of us, but
sometimes there’s no avoiding a meal out at a less than healthy establishment. So here are some tips and
guidelines for smart ordering and healthy practices when eating out.
1. Fast Food Does Not Mean Fried Food. Instead of ordering something fatty, order a salad and foods
that are either grilled or baked.
2. Avoid High-Fat Add-Ons and mind the portions. Be careful with salad dressings and cheese. Ask
them on a side so you can add moderately. Also, try to make portions a bit smaller.
3. Drink Water. Soda, sweetened iced tea and lemonades, energy drinks and most juices are loaded with
high fructose corn syrup and empty calories. Drink water, and if you are tired of plain water try adding
a squeeze of lemon or using sparkling spring water instead.
4. Plan Ahead. Keep your purse, bag, and car ready for moments when hunger strikes and a healthy
snack is in need. Dried fruits, granola, mixed nuts, apples, oranges, and cereals stay fresh and transport
easily – especially with the range of cool, non-toxic containers available.
