WRITING TASK 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The two maps below show an island, before and after the construction of some tourist facilities.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons
where relevant.
Tips
• Normally there are years given for the maps, and you should use appropriate tenses
accordingly.
• However, for those that do not include years, like the ones above, it is generally advisable
to use the present perfect tense as it indicates changes that have taken place, but you
are not clear when.

Sample Answer
The two illustrations display the transformation of an island before and after it has been
developed for tourism. Overall, it is evident that the island has been completely transformed, with
the addition of many tourist facilities, but the eastern part remains undeveloped.
The island is about 200 metres from west to east, with trees scattered around it. The most
noticeable change is the addition of hotel rooms; there are six new hotels built in the western
part of the island, and nine have also been constructed in the centre. These accommodations
can be accessed through footpaths linking them. Between the two accommodation areas, a
reception building and a restaurant have been built.
In the south of the island, a pier has been added, which allows yacht access. This is connected to
the reception area and the restaurant by vehicle tracks. The beach in the west remains
untouched, but it appears that now it can be used for swimming.
Some people feel that entertainers (e.g. film stars, pop musicians, or sports stars) are

WRITING TASK 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important
element of individual wellbeing.
What factor contributes to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction
for all workers?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge
and experience.
Planning Phase:
Intro People = adults; major part of their life at work = most of their time working
...........................................................................................................................................................
Job satisfaction = being content with your career; wellbeing = health and happiness
...........................................................................................................................................................
Body 1 - Most important thing that satisfies someone at work: fair pay
...........................................................................................................................................................
+ Fair salary and benefits: important marks of respect
...........................................................................................................................................................
+ If underpaid, you either resent your boss or leave your job
...........................................................................................................................................................
+ Example: survey conducted by Monster.com: 72% workers pleased when paid well
...........................................................................................................................................................
Body 2 -...........................................................................................................................................................
Highly unlikely for all workers to be happy with their jobs
+ Vast majority of people fail to reach their goals → work jobs they do not like
...........................................................................................................................................................
+ Their salary only enough to pay their living expenses → trapped in frustration
...........................................................................................................................................................
+ Example: majority of ppl in Vietnam: quit their jobs if not for the salary

Sample Answer
Because most adults spend most of their time working, being content with your job plays a key
role in your health and happiness. I believe that a good salary is the most important factor that
contributes to job satisfaction and that it is nearly impossible for everyone to feel happy with
their jobs.
To begin with, I think the most important thing that satisfies someone at work is fair pay. This is
because fair pay and benefits are important marks of respect for the efforts someone puts into
their job. In the current economic climate, if a worker is underpaid, they will either resent their
boss or leave their job in search of one that is better paid. For example, a survey conducted by a
website called Monster.com reveals that 72% of employees would feel pleased with their
occupation if they are well-paid.
Secondly, it is highly unlikely for all workers to be happy with their jobs. That is to say, the vast
majority of people often fail to reach their professional goals and end up working jobs that they
do not want. The result of this is that they will only earn enough from their jobs to spend on living
expenses and will not have extra funds for other needs, which means they are trapped in
frustration. For instance, most factory workers in Vietnam reported that they would leave their
jobs if they did not need the salary to get by.
In conclusion, my standpoint is that a high salary is essential to job satisfaction, whilst the
possibility of everyone being content with their job is unrealistic.
