The subject of the seminar:
Asia is the largest and most populous continent, containing two of the most important key
players in the international system: China and India; and the mysterious country of North
Korea with its nuclear weapon. Discussing the political issue in South, Southeast, and East
Asia under the theoretical frameworks of Authoritarianism and Realism to demonstrate the
uniqueness and diversity of Asia’s politics, various topics related to North Korea or the new
so-call Myanmar genocide, or the current disputes between China – the great power and the
other Asian countries in the region or India and its inequality.

Week 4: The overview of the characteristics of Asia politics: The Challenges of ASEAN.

Week 12: Consultation for the topic of the final assignment.

Course structure:
 In each seminar, an introduction to the topic is provided by the teacher.
 However; the focus of this seminar is on facilitating a discussion among students.
 In each seminar, 2 students summarize the papers provided for that week.
 All students are expected to read both papers provided for each seminar in order to
make meaningful contributions to the discussions.

Assessment:
1. Each student is required to give one presentation based on a paper from the syllabus:
o For this presentation, students are expected to briefly summarize a paper from
the syllabus and contextualize it with a news / popular article of their own
choice.
o Each presentation should last approximately 20 minutes.
o Students may use notes or PowerPoint for their presentations. Reading out long
transcripts is discouraged and may result in a lower grade.
2. Students are obliged to be present and are encouraged to make meaningful
contributions to the discussions.
o Students are allowed, to a limited degree, to be absent. Three absences,
whatever the reasons are, can be accepted by the instructor.
o However, Students with a higher attendance ratio will get more points than
those with a lower attendance ratio.

o Similarly, students with a higher degree of involvement (e.g. in the


discussions) will get more points than those with a lower degree of
involvement. Students are expected to actively contribute to each discussion.
o In order to do so students are recommended to read the papers on a weekly
basis.
3. The final part of the assessment is a written essay to be handed in by the end of the
semester; the requirements and the topic of which will be specified.
