• A verb is a word or group of words that shows an action, an event, or
state of being. There are different types of verbs.
o Action verb: shows an action being carried out or an event
happening.

o Stative verb: describes a state of being rather than an action.

• Examples of verbs in sentences.

o Umar is coming home later.

• Verbs can either be singular or plural


o A singular verb must be used with a singular subject (one person,
place, thing or idea)
o A plural verb must be used with the plural subject in a sentence.
Singular • Siva plays football every weekend.
(The subject Siva and the verb plays are both in the singular
form.)
Plural • The boys play football every weekend.
(The subject boys and the verb play are both in the plural
form.)
• The same verb can be used in different forms to show when an event
takes place or when something has happened. These forms of the verbs
are known tenses. There are:
o The present tense
o The past tense
o The future tense

o Simple Present Tense:

• He lives near the school while I live far away.
• The bus departs every hour.
o Simple Past Tense:
• He sang at the concert last night.
• If I were you, I would travel around the world.
• Mrs Loke wore heavy make up when she was younger.
• Big Bad Wolf huffed and puffed and blew the house down.

• There are regular and irregular verbs in past tense.
