EDITOR
Letter to the Editor

● Is a means of expressing of one’s views and opinions on a current subject


or issue.
● It is a persuasive text, which aims to express one’s views to a wider
public.
● A written way of talking to readers of a regularly printed publication
(newspaper, magazine, periodical etc.)
● Are often responses to articles from the particular publication or to other
letters to the editor.
PURPOSE
Why do we write a letter to the Editor ?
● To comment on news item, articles, other people’s letters
● To complain about something being ignored by authorities
● To express opinions on controversial issues
● To praise, thank, suggest, etc.
● You're angry about something and want others to know
● An issue is so important that you must speak out
● To persuade others to take a specific action
● To suggest an idea to others
● To influence public opinion
● To educate the public
● To influence policymakers
When do we write a letter to the Editor?
Letters to the editor can be written when you:
● want to shape public opinion
● tell others how you feel about people, programs, or ideas,
● inform the public on a certain issues.
Letters to the editor can be written when you want to:
● start a community conversation about an important issue
● Advocate a cause
● stimulate public interest and media coverage
It's up to you to determine when is the best time to start writing the letters,
allowing time for them to be published
Writing a Letter to the Editor
Some points to remember when writing a letter to the Editor
● Open with a simple salutation
● Grab the reader's attention
● Explain what the letter is about at the beginning
● Explain why the issue is important
● Give evidence for any praise or criticism
● State your opinion about what should be done
● Keep it brief
● Sign the letter.
● Check your letter to make sure it's clear and to the point
FORMAT
1. Sender’s address: First you need to write
the address and contact details of the
sender.
2. Date: Now, below the sender’s address,
leave a space or line and then write the
date.
3. Receiving Editor’s address: Here you
need to write the address of the recipient
of the mail i.e. the editor.
4. Subject of the letter: Write the main
purpose of the letter in one line. It must
convey the matter for which you are
writing the letter.
5. Salutation: For formal letter, the salutation

6. Body: Write the matter of the letter here.
You can divide it into 3 paragraphs.
7. First para of the body: Introduce the theme
or subject and explain the purpose of
writing the letter in brief.
8. Second para : Give a complete detail of
the matter. Include causes/effects,
reasons/consequences.
9. Third para: Conclude by suggesting
remedies or ways to counter the problem.
10. Complimentary Closing: Eg. yours truly.
11. Sender’s name, signature, and
designation (if any provided in the
question).

1. Opening (Introduction)

5. If you agree partially and disagree with other parts…

Questions for Practice:
Q1.You have read about many incidents of crimes committed against the senior citizens living
alone in your city which have been reported in the newspaper. You are most concerned about
their safety and security. Write a letter to the editor of a national daily drawing the attention of
the concerned authorities and giving your suggestions.

Q2. Along with air and water pollution our cities are also under an attack of noise pollution.
Marriage processions, DJs, during wedding receptions, heavy traffic etc. are all sources of
noise which is not good for the old, the ailing and students. Write a letter to the Editor of a
local newspaper highlighting the problem. You are Karan/Karuna, M-114, Mall Road, Delhi.

Q3. You are appalled at the attitude of people towards traffic rules and the fact that they have
no compunction even when they blatantly flout it. Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper
expressing concern about the issue and suggesting ways to counter it.
