Quiz 4
Question 1
Figure 1 shows the filtered and unfiltered output waveforms of a bridge full wave rectifier
(BFWR) circuit. The rectifier circuit is connected to the secondary winding of a step down
transformer, whose primary winding is connected to a 230 Vrms AC input at 50 Hz.
Determine the following :
b. The required filter capacitor value and voltage rating, given that the load resistance
across the filter capacitor is 180 Ω.
c. The maximum power dissipated by each diode in the circuit given that the capacitor
charging time is 20% of the period (T) of the rectifier output waveform.

Question 2
Consider a capacitor filtered bridge full wave rectifier (BFWR) circuit with a 100 Ω load
resistor. The AC input to the transformer primary is 230 Vrms at 50 Hz. The peak-to-peak
ripple voltage is specified to be 30% of the peak output voltage across the filter capacitor.
The voltage across a diode in the circuit is as presented in figure 2.
VD
0.7 V
t
-15.3 V
Apply the diode constant voltage drop (CVD) model with VD(on) = 0.7 V, and determine
the following :

Question 3
An LED strip light consumes 40 mA at 12 V DC when switched on, and draws no current
when switched off. The DC power supply for the light is zener regulated and the DC input
voltage to the regulator varies between 16 V and 15 V. The zener diode specifications
are IZ(max) = 100 mA, VZ(nominal) = 12 V, IZ(min) = 10 mA. Use the ideal zener diode model
in your calculations to determine the following :
a. The range of the magnitude of the series resistor in the regulator circuit.
i. The maximum current through the zener diode while operating in the circuit.
ii. The minimum current through the zener diode while operating in the circuit.
iii. Reason for both the above cases that the diode remains in regulation.
c. The maximum power dissipated by the zener diode while operating in the circuit.
