Coursework

5021MAA Coursework 02-Nov 2023.

Coursework Brief on Aula
Structure of the Coursework • You will be designing a product based on
some key performance requirements.
• You will review real world certification
requirements against for the product you
are designing.
• Through calculation, you will choose
suitable components for your actuator
from real world catalogues.
• You will provide ‘concept’ drawings to
show how the components might fit
together.
• You will predict the overall general
performance of your actuator design.
Coursework notes

If you are not sure about what you should and shouldn’t do
1. Read the information carefully
2. Check your understanding with me in class
3. Make a start, come up with thoughts and ideas of what you think ‘good’
looks like.
4. Check with me if your thoughts and ideas are correct.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: “What should I be designing?” The ‘I haven’t made an effort’ question
A: Read the coursework brief

Q: “What are certification requirements?” The ‘I have never heard of Google’ question
A: Figure it out for yourself.
The ‘I didn’t read the brief properly’ question
Q: “Can I design an EMA actuator?” OR:
A: NO!! The ‘I have my own ideas and want to do it my way’ question

Q: “I am trying to select a motor. I read the motor

datasheet carefully, I checked the datasheet notes The ‘good student’ question
and tried to search for an answer online and in
books but I still don’t understand what ‘TLA’
means?”
A: OK, let me help you with that……...

Use
• design catalogues and
• online tools
to select a real world available component.

• Use online design tools

to complete your
selection.

• Note the rated condition

is often for ‘continuous
operation’.

• Will your actuator be

moving ‘continuously’?
Pump Type Selection
• Decide which type of hydraulic pump you will use. You
need to explain and justify your choice.
• Firstly consider variable or fixed displacement, then
consider the pump type.
• Consider the pressure, flowrate and power required.
Pump Type Selection
• Once you choose a pump type
you will need to choose a
standard component from an
industrial supplier
Drive Type Selection
• Many suppliers provide
general datasheets giving
sizings for a range of
products……

……and then more detailed

specific datasheets for
particular designs.
Calculations
Calculations
Calculations Presentation – Input Values and
information sources
• Input values should be clearly
presented at the start of the
calculations.
• Information sources should be well
citated and referenced.
• Input data should only be used in
calculation once it has been
declared.

How many problems can you spot here?

Calculations Presentation – Input Values and information sources

Missing
citations
Vague

calculations. Not sensible
engineering
• Information sources should be units
well citated and referenced.
• Input data should only be used Input values
in calculation once it has been halfway down
declared.

Input values in variables)
equations
Improved Calculation formatting.

• Better but still work to do

• Note there are still some errors in these equations.
Layout Diagram
Layout diagrams and Schematics
Layout Diagram
• Use manufacturer data to get key dimensions
of your components
• Use this to construct your own concept
assembly drawing.
• Cross-section views will be very useful.
• You can assume some modifications to the
standard parts.
• Can be quite ‘blocky’!

Simplest method
Cut, scale and trim available images and place them
together.
Key dimensions??
Better method Overall lengths, diameters. Movement distances (stroke).
Redraw (by hand or CAD) your chosen components
to scale showing the assembly. Other considerations
How is the actuator mounted to the aircraft?
Where are the bearings within the design?
Where would the wiring go?
Performance Predictions
Performance
Predictions
This should be the overall performance of the actuator, not just the individual
performance of the motor or pump. Consider how the datasheets you have
looked at and use a similar style.

Things to consider for your actuator performance

• Stall Force (maximum force it can produce).
• Continuous versus intermittent performance.
• Max load it can withstand (not necessarily move against)
• Overall efficiency
• Power consumption
• Heat dissipation (thermal power due to efficiency losses)

• Your actuator performance should at least match the requirements you choose.
In some areas it may well exceed the requirements due the design choices you
needed to make. This is OK and you should present the full capability of your
design in this section.

Hand drawn diagrams/drawings

• OK as long as they are neat.
Finally!
• Read the assignment brief for yourself.
• Don’t forget to read the notes and the marking rubric.
