I. SOFTCAPE

Softscaping is a component of landscape design that refers

to the living, horticultural elements involved in landscaping.

Softscape elements include trees, flowers, plants, grass, soil,

flower beds, and groundcover.

SOFTSCAPE ELEMENTS

Types of Trees:

1. Species Name: Royal Palm

Official Common Name: Manila Palm,

Christmas Palm, Merrill's Palm,

Adonidia Palm, Dwarf

Family: Arecaceae (Palmae)

Characteristics: Growth Form: A palm with a single, erect

trunk. Habitat: This species occurs in rainforests, open

forests, steep limestone hills and areas along the coast,

such as beaches near forests. It is found at altitudes of

10 - 100 m in the Philippines. Trunk: Trunk is gray with

numerous circular leaf scars that are evenly spaced from

top to bottom. Foliage: Large, pinnately compound leaves

are arched upwards (1.5 - 2 m long), but the leaflets droop

downwards (0.6 m long, 5 cm wide).


Origin: Philippines

Purpose: Landscape Uses - Roadside Tree / Palm, Container

Planting, Interiorscape/ Indoor Plant, Coastal, Beachfront

/ Shoreline.

2. Species Name: Polyalthia longifolia (Sonn.) Thwaites

Official Common Name: Indian tree

Family: Annonaceae

Characteristics: Polyalthia longifolia

is a small- to medium-sized evergreen

tree growing up to 15 meters. Young

plants have straight trunks and weeping

pendulous branches, longest at the base

and shorter at the end of the trunk..

Leaves are long, narrow and

oblanceolate, dark green, glossy and wavy margins. Flowers

are delicate pale green with wavy petals. Fruits are ovoid,

black when ripe.

Origin:

- Native to India and Sri Lanka.

- An ornamental street tree.


- Recently introduced in the Philippines and widely

cultivated in metro Manila, planted in parks, gardens and

roadsides.

Purpose: Studies have shown antibacterial, antifungal,

cytotoxic, antiulcer, hypotensive, laxative,

anti-inflammatory properties.

Types of Flowers:

1. Species Name: Bougainvillea

spectabilis

Official Common Name: Bougainvillea

Family: Nyctaginaceae

Characteristics: The leaves are large and ovate, with

rippling along the edges and hairs on the underside. The

bracts are red, dark pink, or purple, while the small

flowers are cream colored. Its thorns are large and may be

curved. The growth habit is dense, and the colorful bracts

appear up and down the branches.

Origin: Native to South America. One of the most popular

ornamental plants in the Philippines.

Purpose: The plant has local medicinal uses, whilst it is

also often used as a formal hedge or ground cover. It is


widely grown as an ornamental from the warm temperate to

the tropical zones, and is often grown in greenhouses in

climates that are unsuitable for it.

2. Species Name: Tribe Ixoreae

Official Common Name: Santan-pula

Family: Rubiaceae

Characteristics: It consists of tropical evergreen trees

and shrubs and holds around 562 species. Though native to

the tropical and subtropical areas throughout the world,

its center of diversity is in Tropical Asia.

Origin: Originated in South Africa

Purpose: They are of great economic importance; they’re

ornamental plants and are grown for decorative purposes in

gardens and landscape design, projects, as house plants.


Types of Plants:

1. Species Name: Duranta angustifolia Salisb

Official Common Name: Duranta Golden Plant

Family: Verbenaceae

Characteristics: Duranta is a smooth, unarmed, scrambling

shrub, growing to a height of 1-3 meters, with straggling

and drooping branches. Leaves are small, obovate-elliptic,

3 to 6 centimeters long, with pointed or rounded tips and

pointed base; the margins, entire or slightly toothed.

Origin: It contains 17 species of shrubs and small trees

that are native from southern Florida to Mexico and South

America.

Purpose: The Golden Duranta plant is an attractive

ornamental plant with bright yellow foliage. It is a low

maintenance plant and can grow well in a wide range of

growing conditions. It is known to purify the air by

removing pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde.

2. Species Name: Buxus

Official Common Name: Boxwood shrub

Family: Buxaceae

Characteristics: Boxwood shrubs are slow-growing plants

with dark green glossy leaves. Some varieties have


variegated leaves. Leaf shape depends on the variety; some

are round while others are elliptical.

Origin: Native to Europe and Asia

Purpose: They provide thick cover because the foliage

begins close to the ground and is dense enough to block

light.

3. Species Name: Epipremnum pinnatum

Official Common Name: Tibatib

Family: Araceae

Characteristics: Tibatib is a stout vine climbing on tree

trunks, reaching a height of 5 to 6 meters.

Origin: Native to the Philippines

Purpose: Ornamental plant

4. Species Name: Asparagus Fern

Official Common Name: Asparagus

Fern

Family: Asparagaceae

Characteristics: Perennial herb up

to 1 m tall with scrambling growth habit. Extensive root

system is composed of a mass of fine roots and tubers the

size of grapes.
Foliage Dark green, needle-like leaves are densely

arranged along stems that resemble fern fronds.

Origin: Polynesia, HI, SE Asia, Australia, Madagascar

Purpose: This cultivar is a good groundcover in areas with

light shade. It needs more water in full sun to grow well.

Ornamental Foliage. Can withstand dry Soils / Drought,

Fertile Loamy Soils.


II. HARDSCAPE

Hardscaping refers to any man made structure within

landscaping design that is made of inanimate materials like

gravel, brick, wood, pavers, or stone. Any solid structure in an

outdoor area that is not plant life is considered hardscape.

1. Walkways / Pathwalks

Materials: Grass Pavers

Purpose: The areas of grass/ vegetation allow rainwater to seep

into the ground, replenishing the water table. In addition, the

vegetation in the pavers will filter out the pollutants, so the

water that returns to the earth is clean.

Dimensions:
2. Benches

Materials: Bamboo and Concrete

Purpose: Aside from its visual aesthetic, bamboo has higher

compressive strength that is suitable for public seating while

concrete adds stability and permanence to the structure. This

two combo adds visual aesthetics and modern finish.

3. Fountain

Materials: Reinforced concrete

Purpose: For aesthetic character and contributes a positive

psychological effect on the visitors and patients.


4. Landmark

Materials: Reinforced concrete and Metal sheet for letters

Purpose: Serves as the identity or landmark of the hospital.
