Abstract
Critical thinking is a thinking style involved in problem-solving activities, and it is also an
essential constituent in the decision-making process. Whereas, a person's achievement or
performance is measured by the level of expertise he has gained due to training. The objective of
this study was to investigate the effect of Critical thinking on Academic performance among
school students. The sample involved 200 School students age ranging from 12 to 15 years from
Bihar and Kerala, 100 from each state. The study used a correlational research design. The study
results indicated that two dimensions of Academic performance- Academic success and Academic
productivity were found positively correlated with some dimensions of Critical thinking. The
stepwise regression analysis showed that the Cost value dimension of Critical thinking emerged
as a significant predictor of Academic productivity (β = .44, p<.01), and Academic success (β = -
.17, p<.05). Overall, Critical thinking emerged as an important predictor of academic
performance. The findings of this research may be used as a reference point for incorporating a
critical thinking pedagogy into the course curriculum, which would aid students in developing
their skills and dispositions, hence enhancing their academic performance.
Key Words: Critical Thinking, Impulse control, expectancy-value, Academic Performance.
INTRODUCTION
Critical thinking has been found to be associated with many outcome variables such as efficiency,
effectiveness and success. Criticalthinking has its foundations in a variety of areas, including
psychology, education etc. and in each discipline, it has its definition. It is an intellectually
disciplined process ''of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing
or evaluating information'' (Paul, 1993).
